Theta oscillations: A rhythm difference comparison between major depressive disorder and anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Due to substantial comorbidities of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorder (AN), these two disorders must be distinguished. Accurate identification and diagnosis facilitate effective and prompt treatment. EEG biomarkers are a potential research hotspot for neuropsychiatric diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in EEG power spectrum at theta oscillations between patients with MDD and patients with AN. METHODS: Spectral analysis was used to study 66 patients with MDD and 43 patients with AN. Participants wore 16-lead EEG caps to measure…

Self-other referential neural processing in social anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid and share impairments in self-referential and social processing. Many naturalistic judgements activate these processes concurrently, which can be referred to as "self-other referential processing". We sought to examine its neural correlates in young people with SAD and MDD using a novel experimental task. METHODS: Fifty six young people aged 16 to 25 with diagnoses of SAD and/or MDD (15 with SAD [M = 20.3 years, 60% female], 17 with MDD [M = 19.8 years, 53% female], 24 with comorbid SAD and MDD […

Difference in binocular rivalry rate between major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

Binocular rivalry (BR) occurs when monocular images are presented simultaneously to corresponding regions of the two eyes. Rather than formi … ry rates and whether rivalry rates differ between these conditions. Thirty-five patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 30 patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and 30 control participants matched on sex, age and education were recruited. Psychotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder are among the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses in Canada; both are associated with a high societal and economic burden. Treatment for major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder consists of pharmacological and psychological interventions. Three commonly used psychological interventions are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and supportive therapy. The objectives of this report were to assess the effectiveness and safety of these types of therapy for the treatment of adults wit…

The network structure of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and somatic symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) often co-occur with somatic symptomatology. Little is known about the contributions of individual symptoms to this association and more insight into their relationships could help to identify symptoms that are central in the processes behind the co-occurrence. This study explores associations between individual MDD/GAD symptoms and somatic symptoms by using the network approach. METHOD: MDD/GAD symptoms were assessed in 2704 participants (mean age 41.7 years, 66.1% female) from the Netherlands Study of Depressi…

Polymorphisms of IKBKE gene are associated with major depressive disorder and panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: The immune system has been increasingly implicated in the development of mood and anxiety disorders. Inhibitor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B cells, kinase epsilon (IKBKE) gene encodes IKKε protein that is involved in innate immunity, predominantly antiviral response generation. It also bears pro-inflammatory properties that could affect psychiatric outcomes. In order to investigate the possible role of IKBKE gene in major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD), we conducted a case-control genetic association study concerning these disorders. METHODS: In …

Generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder comorbidity: an example of genetic pleiotropy?

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are the most common type of anxiety-mood comorbidity. Up to 80% of subjects with lifetime GAD also have a comorbid mood disorder during their lifetime. Many hypotheses have been raised to explain such high comorbidity. Pleiotropy, i.e. a single genetic mutation explains (apparently) different disorders, is one of them and is hereby reviewed. Importance and reliability of GAD and MDD comorbidity (1); Evidence in favour of co-aggregation of GAD and MDD within families (the risk of one disorder in a proband increasing the risk…

[Depressive disorder and depression within schizophrenia spectrum disorders: are they the same?].

Depressive states are a prevalent condition in mental disorders other than depressive disorders, which raises the question of whether or not depression in non-depressive disorders and depressive disorders has the same clinical and biological meaning. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that depression in schizophrenia spectrum disorders and depressive disorders does have the same characteristics regarding gender distribution and family history of mood disorders in first-degree relatives. The study sample was made up of 660 psychotic patients who were assessed for alternative defin…

Posttyphoon prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder in a Vietnamese sample.

In 2006, typhoon Xangsane disrupted a multiagency health needs study of 4,982 individuals in Vietnam. Following this disaster, 798 of the original participants were reinterviewed to determine prevalence and risk factors associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), panic disorder (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Posttyphoon prevalences were PTSD 2.6%, MDD 5.9%, PD 9.3%, and GAD 2.2%. Of those meeting criteria for a disorder, 70% reported only one disorder, 15% had two, 14% had three, and 1% met criteria for all four disorders. Risk factors …

Alexithymia and emotional intelligence in patients with panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a broad personality construct signifying the ability to perceive and to regulate affects within oneself. Alexithymia is another personality construct denoting difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions, with an externally oriented thinking style. Although previously considered to be independent, some studies have shown that these constructs overlap. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the levels of EI and alexithymia in patients with panic disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The subjects included…

Childhood maltreatment and inflammatory biomarkers associated with depressive severity in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

Adolescent depression shows marked heterogeneity in symptom severity, yet mechanisms linking early-life adversity to severe depressive presentations remain unclear. Childhood maltreatment may induce persistent alterations in immune and stress-regulatory systems, increasing vulnerability to severe depression. This study examined whether childhood adversity, circulating biomarkers, and recent stress contribute to differences between severe and non-severe adolescent depression. Seventy adolescents with depressive disorder were classified into severe (SD, n = 40, HAMD-17 ≥ 24) and non-severe (NSD,…

Association of the TLR4 gene with depressive symptoms and antidepressant efficacy in major depressive disorder.

At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of major depressive disorder(MDD) are still unclear. Some studies have shown that toll-like receptor 4 may play an important role in MDD. However, little is currently known about the association between TLR4 single gene polymorphisms (SNPs) and depressive symptoms and antidepressant efficacy. The aim of this study is to analyze whether TLR4 SNPs are associated with depressive symptoms and antidepressant efficacy. The study consisted of 438 patients with first-episode depression. We analyzed three TLR4 SNPs (rs1927911, rs11536889, and rs7873784) and obta…

Multimodal AI for predicting comorbid REM sleep behavior disorder in major depressive disorder.

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a robust prodromal marker of α-synucleinopathies: idiopathic RBD carries a 10-15-year phenoconversion risk of 80-90% to Parkinson's disease (PD) and related disorders. In major depressive disorder (MDD), comorbid RBD marks a subgroup at elevated prodromal PD risk, yet is frequently missed in psychiatric practice. Here, we developed a multimodal AI framework to detect comorbid RBD in MDD. From a clinical cohort of 329 patients, we obtained 261 video clips in 31 patients during reading and spontaneous-speech tasks, including 19 patients with MDD-RBD and 12 de…
