Data relating to weight of infants from 23 developing countries and two western industrialized populations taken from the literature were compared. Growth in the developing countries was extremely variable, but was poor compared to western standards such that by 12 months of age mean weight in all 23 populations was below the NCHS 50th percentile (P < 0.001) and in 11 populations mean weight was below the 10th percentile. Birth weight was not related to growth increment in the first 3 months. Multiple regression analysis showed birth weight and growth increments in the first four 3-month perio…

This chapter discusses international aspects of diseases resulting from exposure to chemical pollutants in the environment, with an emphasis on developing countries. These countries share many of the same problems of air, water, and pesticide pollution that face the more industrialized countries. In developing countries, however, the problems are compounded by a number of unique situations, viz., economic priorities, high burden of infectious diseases, impoverishment, and absence of a regulatory framework for the disposal of toxic chemicals. This discussion emphasizes the importance of interac…

Travelers to developing countries are at risk of contracting tropical infectious diseases that they or their physicians may be unfamiliar with. Proper pre-travel counsel should be given concerning general health risks that may be encountered abroad, immunizations, malaria prophylaxis and prevention and treatment of traveler's diarrhea. In Rhode Island, expert advice may be obtained at the Traveler's Clinics at the Miriam Hospital in Providence (401-274-3700 or 331-8500, ext. 4075) and the Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket (401-722-6000, ext. 2545). The Miriam Traveler's Clinic is open Wednesday (…

In developing countries, cataract affects many young but also poor patients. They have difficulties to get operated and generally cannot afford to buy spectacles. Implanting artificial crystalline lens is, then, theorically the best solution. This skillfull technique, nevertheless, requires a high level sanitary environment. Recent advances in the surgical treatment of cataract and postoperative correction of aphakia minimized its risks. Improvements in plastics technology give new possibilities. A study of the various techniques available and of the changes required in the sanitary environmen…

The rapidly increasing use of water for agricultural and hydroelectric development in developing countries is causing serious health problems. These can be divided into two categories; the diseases whose transmission depends on water; and the changes in the life style of the population. We review briefly the principal health problems and analyze the principles to be followed in solving them, and the reasons of the success or failure of health programs. Among the topics we consider, are the development versus health, the collaboration of health service personnel with the rest of the personnel p…

The problem of sufficient nitrogen and caloric supply for surgical patients with pronounced protein catabolism under the working conditions of a surgical department in a developing country is discussed. The authors report good success with Vivonex in the postoperative nutrition of patients with a small bowel perforation with typhoid fever and of patients with diffuse peritonitis following a perforated appendix. Vivonex proved its usefulness also in the alimentation of patients with tropical myositis and extensive burns.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, only 5%-15% of people in lower-income countries have access to prostheses. This is largely due to low availability of materials and high costs of prostheses. 3D-printing techniques have become easily accessible and can offer functional patient-specific components at relatively low costs, reducing or bypassing the current manufacturing and postprocessing steps. However, it is not yet clear how 3D-printing can provide a sustainable solution to the low availability of limb prostheses for patients with amputations in lower-income countries.

We describe a case of a middle-aged woman who presented with progressive jaundice and was suspected to have rebound choledocholithiasis, which was initially managed with balloon extraction through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography at her first presentation. Healthcare in Pakistan, like many other developing countries, is divided into public and private sectors. The public sector is not always completely free of cost. Patients seeking specialised care in the public sector may find lengthy waiting times for an urgent procedure due to a struggling system and a lack of specialists and…

African livestock breeds are numerous and diverse, and typically well adapted to the harsh environment conditions under which they perform. They have been used over centuries to provide livelihoods as well as food and nutritional security. However, African livestock systems are dynamic, with many small- and medium-scale systems transforming, to varying degrees, to become more profitable. In these systems the women and men livestock keepers are often seeking new livestock breeds or genotypes - typically those that increase household income through having enhanced productivity in comparison to t

The deleterious effects of ambient air pollution on human health have been consistently documented by many epidemiologic studies worldwide, and it has been calculated that globally at least seven million deaths are annually attributable to the effects of air pollution. The major air pollutants emitted into the atmosphere by a number of natural processes and human activities include nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter. In addition to the poor ambient air quality, there is increasing evidence that indoor air pollution also poses a serious threat to human health, e

Oral vaccines are less immunogenic when given to infants in low-income compared with high-income countries, limiting their potential public health impact. Here, we review factors that might contribute to this phenomenon, including transplacental antibodies, breastfeeding, histo blood group antigens, enteric pathogens, malnutrition, microbiota dysbiosis and environmental enteropathy. We highlight several clear risk factors for vaccine failure, such as the inhibitory effect of enteroviruses on oral poliovirus vaccine. We also highlight the ambiguous and at times contradictory nature of the avail

Leptospirosis is a widespread bacterial zoonosis with highest burden in low-income populations living in tropical and subtropical regions, both in urban and in rural environments. Rodents are known as the main reservoir animals, but other mammals may also significantly contribute to human infections in some settings. Clinical presentation of leptospirosis is nonspecific and variable, and most of the early signs and symptoms point to the so-called "acute fever of unknown origin", a major diagnostic challenge in tropical and subtropical areas. However, leptospirosis can rapidly evolve to life-th

BACKGROUND: Bladder calculi are one of the commonest health problems in young children especially in rural and underprivileged areas.
METHODS: All children of bladder stones operated at District Headquarter Hospital Mithi from July 2009 to June 2012 were included in this cross-sectional study. Data was collected regarding age, sex, address (rural or urban), body weight, duration of breast feeding, weaning, detailed dietary history regarding milk type, volume, amount of water intake, recurrent diarrhoea, urinary tract infection (UTI), family history, and socioeconomic history. Urine analysis,
