Trifluoperazine (TFP), the antipsychotic drug, induces substantial K+ efflux, membrane hyperpolarization and inhibition of H+-ATPase in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Investigations on the mechanism of these effects revealed two different processes observed at different incubation conditions. At an acidic pH of 4.5 and an alkaline pH of 7.5, K+ efflux was accompanied by substantial proton influx which led to intracellular acidification and dissipation of delta psi formed by cation efflux. This study reports the induction of contact photodermatitis to musk ambrette, 2-methoxy-3,5-dinitro-4-methyl-t-butylbenzene, in guinea pigs. Glycosylation (glycation) of proteins can cause cataractogenesis and cellular damage. Using a human red blood cells (RBC) model and two different methods, this study shows that the glycation of hemoglobin increases significantly in glutathione (GSH) deficient RBC exposed to high glucose levels in vitro. The uptake of Hg vapor (Hg0) by suspensions of human and BALB-c mouse erythrocytes was studied in a closed exposure system. The formation of catalase-compound-I and thereby the oxidation of Hg0 was initiated by microinfusion of hydrogen peroxide. BACKGROUND: Patch testing is the confirmatory procedure for allergic contact dermatitis. The test requires the application of chemicals under occlusion for approximately 48 hours to maximize penetration, although it can also produce irritation. Photomechanical waves (PW) have been shown to render the stratum corneum transiently permeable and facilitate the delivery of macromolecules into the epidermis. This alternative might reduce prolonged occlusion of the skin to minimize irritancy, while retaining the sensitivity of the test.

The effects of two dinitroanilines, oryzalin and trifluralin, were compared against Cryptosporidium parvum, in vitro using HCT-8 cells and in vivo using neonatal Swiss ARC mice and Wistar neonatal rats. In vitro, oryzalin and trifluralin exhibited IC(50) values (concentration necessary to cause a 50% inhibition) of 750 and 800 nM, respectively.
