Do you see what I see? Testing horses' ability to recognise real-life objects from 2D computer projections.

The use of 2-dimensional representations (e.g. photographs or digital images) of real-life physical objects has been an important tool in studies of animal cognition. Horses are reported to recognise objects and individuals (conspecifics and humans) from printed photographs, but it is unclear whether image recognition is also true for digital images, e.g. computer projections. We expected that horses trained to discriminate between two real-life objects would show the same learnt response to digital images of these objects indicating that the images were perceived as objects, or representation

Impact of high and low anxiety trait on object habituation and discrimination: evidence from selected lines of Japanese quail.

Compared to rodents, the relationship between anxiety and cognitive performances has been less studied in birds. Yet, birds are frequently exposed to stimulations that constitute a potential source of anxiety and can affect their adaptation to their living conditions. The present study was aimed at evaluating, in birds, the relationship between levels of anxiety and object habituation and discrimination with the use of Japanese quail lines divergently selected for a fear response, tonic immobility. Previous studies demonstrated that the selection programme has modified the general anxiety trai

Motion deblurring in human vision.

Under normal viewing conditions we are little conscious of blur in moving objects, despite the persistence of vision. Moving objects look more blurred in brief than in long exposures, suggesting an active mechanism for suppressing motion blur. To see whether blur suppression would improve visual discrimination of objects, we measured blur discrimination thresholds for moving Gaussian-blurred edges and bars. The observer's task was to decide which of two moving stimuli, presented successively, was the more blurred. It is known that for stationary objects the just-noticeable difference in blur i

A closed curve is much more than an incomplete one: effect of closure in figure-ground segmentation.

Detection of fragmented closed contours against a cluttered background occurs much beyond the local coherence distance (maximal separation between segments) of nonclosed contours. This implies that the extent of interaction between locally connected detectors is boosted according to the global stimulus structure. We further show that detection of a target probe is facilitated when the probe is positioned inside a closed circle. To explain the striking contour segregation ability found here, and performance enhancement inside closed boundaries, we propose the existence of a synergetic process i

Covert and overt recognition in prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosic patients suffer an inability to recognize familiar people by visual inspection of their faces. Despite the absence of overt recognition, though, some prosopagnosic patients continue to process the identities of familiar faces covertly. A longstanding controversy concerns whether the recognition deficit in prosopagnosia is specific for faces, or also affects other types of visual stimuli. We investigated whether the patient P.H., who has severe problems with within-class recognition of many types of visual stimuli, would show covert recognition for all stimuli which he cannot reco

Object perception and motion in infants.

Male and female infants 10 weeks of age (N = 24) were presented with two distinctively patterned objects in either moving or stationary form. Measures of visual regard indicated the infants were able to discriminate between the objects whether the objects were stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects. The results are also compared to those of an earlier study which employed an operant rather than a preference technique to investigate this same problem.

Influence of Experiences of Discrimination and Anticipated Discrimination on Cardiovascular Health Outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent evidence linking experiences of discrimination and anticipated discrimination with cardiovascular health outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Experiences of discrimination were consistently associated with increased risk of nicotine exposure, poor sleep health, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and subclinical cardiovascular disease. Evidence is mixed for cardiovascular disease diagnoses and cardiovascular mortality. Although research is limited, anticipated discrimination is an independent risk factor for poor sleep health and subclinical cardiovascular

Studies on the discriminative stimulus properties of ethanol in squirrel monkeys.

Eight male squirrel monkeys were trained to use the pharmacological effects of ethanol [orally via gastric intubation 1600 mg/kg (IG), in normal saline] versus those produced by equivolume saline as discriminative stimuli in an operant conditioning (bar pressing) procedure in which the availability of banana-flavored food pellets was made contingent upon the drug condition of the animal (ethanol SD, saline S delta for four monkeys; saline SD, ethanol S delta for the other four monkeys). Test doses of 7.5 mg/kg pentobarbital IG and 80 mg/kg barbital IG closely mimicked the cue properties of eth

Nonassociative explanations of behavioral changes induced by central cholinergic drugs.

Studies concerning the effects of cholinergic stimulants and blockers on habituation, alternation, classical and instrumental conditioning, differentiation, and discrimination are summarized and discussed. This analysis suggests that many results originally ascribed to associative changes can be more economically accounted for by nonassociative factors inherent in the experiments. Furthermore, the data show that neither one of the more economical nonassuciative explanations at either the sensory, the drive, or the response level can by itself account for the complex interactions observed. The

Anisotropic speed discrimination sensitivity for expanding and contracting optic flow.

Retinal optic flow provides critical visual cues for locomotion and self-navigation. Forward self-motion, such as walking or driving, typically induces an expanding radial flow pattern on the retina. Despite the predominance of expanding optic flow in everyday self-motion, several studies have reported higher sensitivity for contracting flow that arises under relatively rare conditions, such as walking backward or falling onto one's back. The underlying basis of this anisotropy remains elusive. In this study, we compared discrimination sensitivity to speed for expanding versus contracting opti

Predicting errors before they occur using trial-by-trial dynamics of pre-error and post-error behavior.

Errors rarely occur in isolation, but rather within behavioral sequences and are known to shape subsequent behavior. However, understanding the full time course of the impact of errors has been challenging given data limitations. Here, to gain key insights, two groups of precisely matched participants (n > 35,000) were compared; those who made versus did not make an error in a short object discrimination task. Linear mixed-effects models revealed error-induced effects both preceding and following errors. First, the error group showed pre-error speeding up to eight trials before the error occur

The Neural Signature of Social Dominance Discrimination by Means of Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation.

Hierarchy is a pervasive feature of social organization. The ability to rapidly discriminate hierarchical information is critical for social interaction. Here, we took advantage of a special technique in electroencephalography (EEG) known as fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS). We used this technique, which captures the automatic perception of faces, to explore the neural signature of social dominance discrimination. A stream of computer-generated faces was presented at 6 Hz, i.e. six faces/second. In the experimental condition, faces alternated from high to low social dominance within a s

Impaired pre-saccadic shifts of attention in neglect patients.

Every saccade is generally preceded by a mandatory shift of attention to the saccade endpoint, allowing us to process visual information more effectively. Whether this 'pre-saccadic shift of attention' is still intact in hemispatial neglect is unknown. Whereas neglect patients exhibit lateralized impairments of attention and often show impaired saccadic behaviour, it is not yet clear how the pre-saccadic shift of attention is affected during accurately executed eye movements. In this study, we used a gaze contingent visual discrimination task, in which neglect patients had to discriminate a pr

Studying plasticity of sensory function: insight from pregnancy.

Plasticity of sensory function has become an object of study because of its proposed role in the recovery of function after central nervous system damage. Normal pregnancy may provide a useful in vivo model to study the effects of progressive reduction in the abdominal skin receptor density. As such changes are confined to abdominal skin, other parts of the body are only moderately affected by pregnancy and therefore can provide a control for other changes during pregnancy. The two-point discrimination test (TPDT) of the skin is a simple test of the sensory function. We conducted the TPDT in a

Operant stimulus control applied to maze behavior: heat escape conditioning and discrimination reversal in Alligator mississippiensis.

Eight alligators were trained to escape heat by traversing an 8-ft runway containing right or left approaches to a water tank. All subjects were run until they had satisfied three criteria of stable response time, after which the predominant escape path was blocked, requiring discrimination reversal. Seven subjects again met the criteria; three also met them in a second reversal.

Effects of pyrazolopyridines and a triazolopyridazine on the pentobarbital discriminative stimulus.

Rats were trained to discriminate injections of racemic pentobarbital (5.0 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination task. After stable discrimination performance was attained, stimulus generalization studies were conducted with another barbiturate (barbital), benzodiazepine derivatives (diazepam and chlordiazepoxide), pyrazolopyridine derivatives (etazolate, cartazolate, and tracazolate), and a triazolopyridazine (CL 218, 872). The pentobarbital stimulus generalized to all of these compounds, except cartazolate. In addition, the administration of the benzodiazepine receptor antago

Neural mechanisms of fear memory precision and generalization: from auditory cortex to amygdala.

Identifying neural networks that infer safety versus danger is of great interest across multiple disciplines. Recent research has started to elucidate the brain networks mediating fear discrimination and generalization. Here, we focus on the contribution of the auditory cortices to auditory fear memory and discrimination processes. We first review studies showing that the primary auditory cortex (Te1) is involved in fear memory for tones with complex perceptual features only. Conversely, Te1 is essential for fear discrimination across all types of acoustic stimuli. These studies support the id

Childhood adversity is associated with reduced threat-safety discrimination and increased fear generalization in 12- to 16-year-olds.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity poses a major transdiagnostic risk for a host of psychiatric disorders. Altered threat-related information processing has been put forward as a potential process underlying the association between childhood adversity and psychiatric disorders, with previous research providing support for decreased discrimination between threat and safety cues, in both children and adults exposed to adversity. This altered threat-safety discrimination has been hypothesized to stem from increased generalization of fear, yet to date, this hypothesis has not been tested in youth. M

Representation of response categories in visual cortex.

It is known that single neurons in visual area V4 are selective for visual features and that their responses are modulated by selective attention. Surprisingly, a new study by Mirabella et al. in this issue of Neuron found that V4 neurons also signal the behavioral response category of the attended feature.
