Total DNA extracted from mucosal and skin lesions of captive and stranded cetaceans was analyzed for herpesvirus DNA by nested and direct po … cetacean lesions. Alphaherpesviruses were associated with skin lesions of three Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), while gammaherpesviruses were present in genital lesions of five Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, one Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), one dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) and one Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris …

The concentrations of Hg, Sn, Cr, Zn, Ni, Co, Cd, Mn, Fe and Cu were determined in the liver, kidney and muscle of 24 common dolphins stranded on the Portuguese coast between 1995 and 1998. Nitric acid was used to extract the metals from the tissues for analysis by inductively-coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES). Those metals with relatively higher concentrations included Fe, Zn and Hg, particularly in liver. Other metals including Cr, Ni and Cd tended to show much lower levels, or were even undetected (e.g. Co). Different metals seemed to show different temporal trends, alth…

Detailed post mortem examinations were carried out on 18 dolphins and whales found dead on the coast of the United Kingdom. The commonest causes of death were pneumonia and entanglement in fishing gear. Of the non-fatal conditions, parasitoses of various organs were common and there was a wide variety of other conditions. In total 124 diseases and other lesions were found, giving an average of 6.9 conditions per animal.

In evolutionary terms, chemical senses are the oldest sensory modality and play key roles in ecological functions such as orientation, foraging, and socio-sexual communication. Chemical perception encompasses olfaction, taste, and chemesthesis, and has been widely studied across vertebrates. However, these senses remain poorly documented in marine mammals, particularly cetaceans. The transition from land to water profoundly reshaped cetacean sensory systems, and for decades they were considered incapable of chemoreception, implying a complete regression. Recent studies challenge this view, sug

Aeromonas dhakensis has emerged as a significant pathogen affecting both aquatic animals and humans; however, genomic data for isolates from marine mammals remain scarce. In this study, we characterised the genome of A. dhakensis strain KDL-001, isolated from a fatal dolphin case, using whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomics. Taxonomic analyses, including MLST and average nucleotide identity (ANI), confirmed the isolate as A. dhakensis. Core-genome phylogeny further revealed that KDL-001 is closely related to strains derived from fish and aquatic environments. Notably, in silico scre

All species of toothed whales studied to date can learn to reduce their hearing sensitivity when warned of an impending intense sound; however, the specific conditions under which animals will employ this technique are not well understood. The present study was focused on determining whether dolphins would reduce their hearing sensitivity in response to an intense tone presented at a fixed rate but increasing level, without an otherwise explicit warning. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to intermittent, 57-kHz tone bursts were continuously measured in two bottlenose dolphins as they were ex…

Aquatic animals such as fish and cetaceans can actively modulate their body stiffness with muscle to achieve excellent swimming performance under different situations. However, it is still challenging for a robotic swimmer with bionic propulsion mode to dynamically adjust its body stiffness to improve the swimming speed due to the difficulties in designing an effective stiffness adjustment structure. In this paper, based on the special torque mode of a motor, we propose an active variable stiffness control method for a robotic dolphin to pursue better swimming speed. Different from a variable

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19-year-old male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) presented with inappetence and avoidant behavior.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Ultrasound revealed a large-volume left-sided pleural effusion, which was consistent with chronic nonchylous lymphatic effusion and mild chronic hemorrhage by cytology. Computed tomography identified ipsilateral rib fractures, atelectasis, nodular pleuritis, marginal lymph node enlargement, and suspected dilation of the thoracic duct and internal thoracic veins. Fifteen lipids were significantly higher in serum of the dolphin as compared with contro

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the accuracy of soft tissue prediction models with Dolphin Imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative and 1-year postoperative Lateral cephalograms (LCG) of patients undergoing Le Fort I, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) or bimaxillary osteotomy (Bimax) between 2006 and 2009 were retrospectively collected. A hard tissue virtual surgery was performed on the preoperative LCG to match the hard tissue of the 1-year postoperative LCG. The soft tissue changes were then modelled by Dolphin Imaging (version 11.5b) and the diff

A bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) housed in the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium (PNPA) presented with symptomatic pneumonia caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. The dolphin was treated with micafungin. On days 2 and 11 after the first administration of micafungin, results from a physical examination and laboratory test indicated a decline of body temperature (BT) and leukopenia, with lowest BT, white blood cells (WBCs), and segmented neutrophils (SEGs) of 34.2°C, 600 cells/µl, and 67 cells/µl, respectively. BT, WBCs, and SEGs returned to normal range after administration of granulocyte colo

BACKGROUND: Brucella spp. isolation is increasingly reported in cetaceans, although associated pathologies, including lesions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, are less frequently described. Concerning the nervous system, Brucella sp. infection causing meningitis, meningoencephalitis or meningoencephalomyelitis have been extensively reported in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), and less frequently in other cetacean species.

The auditory brainstem response to a dolphin's own emitted biosonar click can be measured by averaging epochs of the instantaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) that are time-locked to the emitted click. In this study, averaged EEGs were measured using surface electrodes placed on the head in six different configurations while dolphins performed an echolocation task. Simultaneously, biosonar click emissions were measured using contact hydrophones on the melon and a hydrophone in the farfield. The averaged EEGs revealed an electrophysiological potential (the pre-auditory wave, PAW) that preceded t…

Marine mammal brucellosis has been known for more than 20 years, but recent work suggests it is more widespread than originally thought. Bru … he zoonotic nature of the strain and its presence in the Adriatic, which is inhabited by bottlenose dolphins, suggest that the strain may pose a significant threat to human health.

As methylmercury (MeHg) can be bioaccumulated and biomagnified in the trophic web, its toxicity for marine mammals is of major concern. Mercury speciation in marine biota has been widely studied, mainly focused on the discrimination and quantification of inorganic Hg and MeHg. Less attention has been paid to the interactions of Hg with biomolecules and the characterization of its specific binding, which play a key role in metabolic pathways controlling its uptake, transformation, and toxicity. In the studied white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus) liver homogenate (QC04LH4) sample, approxi

Stillbirth and neonatal mortality are significant problems in captive breeding of dolphins, however, the causes of these problems are not fully understood. Here, we report a case of meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) in a male neonate of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncates) who died immediately after birth. At necropsy, a true knot was found in the umbilical cord. The lungs showed diffuse intraalveolar edema, hyperemic congestion and atelectasis due to meconium aspiration with mild inflammatory cell infiltration. Although the exact cause of MAS in this case was unknown, fetal hypoxia due po…

During 2007 a dolphin morbillivirus epizootic affected the western Mediterranean and several striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded on the Catalonian coasts. One of those animals had severe lymphoid depletion, necrosis and syncytial formation in lymph nodes and spleen, with large basophilic nuclear inclusions compatible with herpesvirus detected by immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examination. Non-suppurative encephalitis with associated morbillivirus antigen and morbillivirus antigen within alveolar macrophages were also observed. A pan-herpesvirus nested polymerase chain re…

Ground transport can be a stressful operation for dolphins if the long period of restraint causes damage to internal organs, especially to the lung, generated by their own weight. Buoyancy is deprived from dolphins under moist transport, in which dolphins are transported on mattresses. Upgrading mattresses is an effective way to modify the transportation method so as to compensate for the loss of buoyancy. In Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), we tried to find mattresses that performed well at distributing the dolphins' weight and preserved their pulmonary function. When usin…

In the summer of 1990 an epizootic infection caused by a morbillivirus (DMV) killed several thousand striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1991 and 1992 the epizootic reached Italian and Greek waters. The infection by DMV in the acute period of the epizootic caused encephalitis, pneumonia and depletion of lymph nodes. After 1990, the systemic infection apparently disappeared from the Catalonian coast, giving way to cases of chronic infection of the CNS. Dolphins that died between 1991 and May 1994 were necropsied, and investigated for lesions due to DMV, and for…

Acoustic communication is vital for marine mammals. Many delphinids rely on frequency-modulated tonal signals – known as whistles – used during social communication. Among these, individually distinctive “signature whistles” have been extensively studied in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) over the past 60 years. These stereotyped whistles convey individual identity and motivational information. Recent studies have identified similar stereotyped whistles in other delphinids, including a rehabilitated rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis). However, the function, occurrence, time–fre…
