Family history of substance use disorder and likelihood of prescription drug misuse in adults 50 and older.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals who are family history positive (FHP) for substance use problems have increased risk for substance use, substance use disorders (SUDs), and psychopathology. Links between FHP status and prescription drug misuse (PDM) have not been well investigated; this study examined PDM in adults 50 and older by FHP status. METHODS: Data were from the US NESARC-III (n = 14,667). Participants reported their opioid PDM, tranquilizer/sedative PDM, SUD, psychopathology, and family history status (i.e. first- and second-degree relatives with alcohol/substance use problems). Prevalence rat

A qualitative analysis of gabapentin misuse and diversion among people who use drugs in Appalachian Kentucky.

Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant and analgesic for postherpetic neuralgia, has been thought to have no abuse potential despite numerous published reports to the contrary. Gabapentin has been linked with impaired driving and opioid use, highlighting the need to more fully understand its risk profile. Thirty-three individuals reporting recent nonmedical use of gabapentin were recruited from two ongoing longitudinal studies of drug users in Appalachian Kentucky to participate in focus groups. Four sessions were held (two in the community and two in jail settings), during which participants responded

Prescription Drug Misuse among African Americans and Afro Caribbeans: Results from the National Survey of American Life.

BACKGROUND: The misuse of prescription medications is an understudied topic among the non-Hispanic Black population in the U.S. Even less is known about the prevalence and correlates of misuse among African Americans and Afro-Caribbeans, despite documented differences in their substance use behaviors. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of lifetime prescription drug misuse among African Americans and Afro Caribbeans using data from the National Survey of American Life. METHODS: A national household probability sample of non-institutionalized African Americans and Af

Medical marijuana legalization and associated illicit drug use and prescription medication misuse among adolescents in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Use of illicit drugs and misuse of prescription medications among U.S. adolescents have been major public health issues. As over half of the states have implemented medical marijuana laws (MMLs), it is unclear if MML implementation is associated with use of illicit drugs and misuse of prescription medications among adolescents. METHODS: This study used data from the 2013-2014 National Survey of Drug Use and Health and included adolescents aged 12-18 with a total of 26,826 participants after the propensity-score matching used to reduce selection bias between states that had and had

Collaborative care from the emergency department for injured patients with prescription drug misuse: An open feasibility study.

Collaborative Care is a comprehensive longitudinal care management strategy. The purpose of this pilot effectiveness-implementation hybrid study was to determine the feasibility of a Collaborative Care intervention initiated from the Emergency Department and proceeding longitudinally for six months for injured patients with prescription drug misuse (PDM). Adult patients presenting to an urban ED with an injury were screened for eligibility from 2/2015-8/2015. Eligible participants with a positive screen for PDM were enrolled in the 'ED-LINC' intervention which included the following elements:

Risk factors for high levels of prescription drug misuse and illicit drug use among substance-using young men who have sex with men (YMSM).

BACKGROUND: Limited research has focused on prescription drug misuse among young men who have sex with men (YMSM), or investigated risk factors contributing to misuse. This study aims to investigate the relationship between multiple psychosocial risk factors (i.e., childhood abuse, discrimination, mental health distress) and prescription drug misuse among YMSM who are current substance users. METHODS: YMSM (N=191) who reported prescription drug misuse in the past 6 months were recruited in Philadelphia between 2012 and 2013 to complete an anonymous survey assessing demographic information, su

Plasma Exchange for Refractory Pruritus Due to Drug-Induced Chronic Cholestasis Following Azithromycin Misuse in COVID-19 Infection.

Azithromycin can result in severe cholestatic liver disease. We describe two cases of intractable pruritus secondary to drug-induced cholestatic liver injury, unresponsive to symptomatic medical therapy, necessitating and responding well to therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). The first is a case of a 60-year-old male known to have stable chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the second is a 46-year-old female known to have primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) who presented at six weeks and two weeks, respectively, post-mild-COVID-19 pneumonia. Sense of control and likelihood of prescription drug misuse 10-years later among middle-aged and older adults.

Objectives: Sense of control (i.e. one's beliefs about their ability to influence life circumstances) has been linked to various psychological outcomes. However, it is unknown if sense of control is protective against prescription drug misuse (PDM). The present study sought to evaluate if sense of control is associated with reduced odds of PDM 9 to 10 years later among a sample of middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Data were evaluated from participants (M = 54 years, SD = 10.86; N = 2,108) of the second and third waves of the Midlife in the United States study. Prescription Drug Misuse Among U.S. Mothers of Minor Children in 2015-2019: Trends, Profiles, and Behavioral Health Comorbidities.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the persistent and elevated risks of prescription drug misuse (PDM) among parenting mothers in the United States, few population-based studies of this phenomenon have been conducted. To address this gap, the present study examined the latest PDM trends and patterns among parenting mothers and assessed their behavioral health comorbidities and treatment utilization. METHOD: Data were derived from a nationally representative U.S. sample of parenting mothers recruited for the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. After examining PDM trends since 2015, we conducted

Piloting the UK's First Home-Office-Licensed Pharmacist-Led Drug Checking Service at a Community Substance Misuse Service.

(1) Introduction: Drug-related deaths in the UK are at concerning high levels. The unknown content and purity of illicit substances can cause unpredictable adverse effects and thus a public health risk with no sign of abating. On-site drug checking is a public health strategy that has previously been implemented, predominantly in festival settings, but without Home Office licensing. (2) Aims: The aim of this study was to pilot the UK's first pharmacist-led, Home Office-licensed community drug checking service. (3) Methods: A bespoke protocol incorporating legally, professionally and ethically

Age and gender differences in motives for z-drug misuse: Findings from the 2015 to 2019 NSDUH survey.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Approximately 9% of people who are exposed to a nonbenzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic medication ("z-drug") misuse this medication, yet, the reasons why people misuse z-drugs are not well-characterized. METHODS: Using population survey data, we examined gender and age differences in motives for z-drug misuse. RESULTS: Results suggested women and older adults have higher odds of misusing z-drugs for sleep, and young adults have higher odds of misusing for recreation. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Although the majority of people who misuse z-drugs report misusing to man

Detection of emerging patterns of drug misuse in sports via wastewater monitoring: A mini-review and potential strategies.

Biological testing is a key component of the current anti-doping programme implemented by the authorities to detect doping in sports. Strategies such as longitudinal individualised data analysis and sport-specific analysis have been developed to increase the comprehensiveness of the testing. However, the trends of drug misuse in sports might not be effectively captured through today's testing plan. Wastewater testing, assembling individual-level data of a designated group to produce population-level results in one single aggregated sample, can be employed to as a complementary strategy offerin

Other Momentary Substance Behaviors as Predictors of College Students' Prescription Drug Misuse in Daily Life: An Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Limited prior research to examine co-occurrence of prescription drug misuse with other substances among young adults has documented outcomes that are more problematic for those with higher rates of co-ingesting alcohol. There is a need to understand how college students in this period of heightened risk use other salient substances in moments of their prescription misuse in daily life. METHOD: Young-adult college students who engaged in recent prescription misuse (N = 297) completed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) over a 28-day period, resulting in 23,578 reports. Multilevel

Comparing views on civil commitment for drug misuse and for mental illness among persons with opioid use disorder.

Despite the growing use of civil commitment for drug use disorders, little is known about attitudes among individuals who might be subject to civil commitment. This study examined attitudes of persons with opioid use disorder toward civil commitment for drug misuse and for psychiatric illness. Consecutive persons entering a brief, inpatient opioid detoxification (n = 254) were surveyed regarding their attitudes about civil commitment for mental illness and for drug use, and responses were compared by commitment type and by individual history of being civilly committed for opioid misuse. The War on Drugs That Wasn't: Wasted Whiteness, "Dirty Doctors," and Race in Media Coverage of Prescription Opioid Misuse.

The past decade in the U.S. has been marked by a media fascination with the white prescription opioid cum heroin user. In this paper, we contrast media coverage of white non-medical opioid users with that of black and brown heroin users to show how divergent representations lead to different public and policy responses. A content analysis of 100 popular press articles from 2001 and 2011 in which half describe heroin users and half describe prescription opioid users revealed a consistent contrast between criminalized urban black and Latino heroin injectors with sympathetic portrayals of suburba
