Shifts in peak month of births and socio-economic factors: a study of divided and reunified Germany 1950-2022.

OBJECTIVES: The seasonality of conception and birth has intrigued scientists for over 200 years. Since the 1970s, peak birth months in the northern hemisphere have shifted from early spring to late summer, influenced by oral contraceptives and socio-economic factors. The division of Germany from the end of World War II until reunification in 1990 offers a unique opportunity to analyze these influences while both regions had equal access to contraception. This study aims to identify differences in fertility trends and peak birth months between West and East Germany before and after reunificatio…

Socio-economic factors associated with loss to follow-up among individuals with HCV: A Dutch nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The path to hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination is complicated by individuals who become lost to follow-up (LTFU) during care, particularly before receiving effective HCV treatment. We aimed to determine factors contributing to LTFU and whether LTFU is associated with mortality. METHODS: In this secondary analysis, we constructed a database including individuals with HCV who were either LTFU (data from the nationwide HCV retrieval project, CELINE) or treated with directly acting antivirals (DAA) (data from Statistics Netherlands) between 2012 and 2019. This database was l

BACKGROUND: Nationwide research about the clinical and economic burden caused by anastomotic leakage (AL) has not been published yet in Korea. This study assessed the AL rate and quantified the economic burden using the nationwide database. METHODS: This real world evidence study used health claims data provided by the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA, which showed that 156,545 patients underwent anterior resection (AR), low anterior resection (LAR), or ultra-low anterior resection (uLAR) for colorectal cancer (CRC) between January 1, 2007 and January 31, 2020. Remission from chronic opioid use-Studying environmental and socio-economic factors on recovery (RECOVER): Study design and participant characteristics.

Few opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment studies measure meaningful life changes during long-term recovery, focusing instead on retention and abstinence. Here, we report on the design and participant characteristics of the RECOVER study, a study exploring life changes in persons with OUD for up to 24 months following participation in a Phase III trial evaluating buprenorphine extended-release monthly injection for subcutaneous use (known as RBP-6000 during development). This multisite, observational, cohort study tracks clinical, environmental, and socio-economic changes using self-administered

Socio-economic position and coronary heart disease risk factors in children and young people. Evidence from UK epidemiological studies.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition with its origin in early life. In adults, CHD and its risk factors show clear socio-economic gradients. The aim of the present review is to collate published evidence to assess if these risk factor gradients are also apparent in young people in the UK. METHODS: Pertinent publications were identified in four ways: i) a systematic search of PUBMED from its inception in January 1966 until October 2000; ii) scanning the reference sections of identified publications; iii) searching the authors' own files; and iv) contacting experts in the fie

Socio-economic status and micro-environmental factors in relation to the risk of Japanese encephalitis: a case-control study.

In a population-based case-control study in Southern Henan Province, central China, children suffering from Japanese encephalitis (JE) were compared with neighborhood controls matched by age and sex in terms of several social and environmental variables. Factors found by crude analysis to be associated with an increased risk of JE included lower family income, lower parental education, living in houses near the periphery of villages and poor quality of houses. When adjustment was made for confounding variables, only the association of house location within village remained of borderline signif

Economic Outcomes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients Switching to a Second Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor or Vedolizumab.

BACKGROUND: Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapies have been the mainstay of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treatment for nearly 2 decades. Therapies with novel mechanisms of action have been recently developed. This study compared healthcare resource utilization (HRU) and costs incurred while switching from an initial anti-TNF to another anti-TNF versus switching to vedolizumab. METHODS: Adults with IBD who switched from initial anti-TNF to another anti-TNF or vedolizumab were identified from Truven MarketScan claims database (January 1, 2000-September 30, 2017). Social and Economic Factors and Malnutrition or the Risk of Malnutrition in the Elderly: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Malnutrition in the elderly could be tackled by addressing socioeconomic factors. Nutritional status and socio-economic conditions as prognostic factors in the outcome of therapy in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The majority of children on earth are to be found in the developing world, many of them malnourished members of impoverished families. Thus, the effects of socio-economic status (SES) on the therapeutic response of children with cancer are obviously relevant. The outcome of treatment in patients with the commonest form of cancer in childhood (acute lymphoblastic leukemia, ALL) is clearly related to their SES. Studies conducted mainly in developing countries have shown malnutrition to be an important prognostic factor in such children. However, other socio-economic conditions could affect the o

Increased prescribing of Valium, Librium, and other drugs--an example of the influence of economic and social factors on the practice of medicine.

Drug prescriptions per capita in the United States have more than doubled since 1950 without a commensurate improvement in health. Drugs are often prescribed for clinical conditions in which therapeutic benefits do not outweigh the risk of adverse drug reactions. Deaths due to adverse drug reactions are roughly as frequent as deaths due to automobile accidents. Valium and Librium are the first and fourth most commonly prescribed drugs in the U.S., used by one ten adults each year. The rapid rise in use of these drugs has occurred during a period of rising social stress, as indicated by increas
