Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia presenting as atrophic rhinitis.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a complex group of familial disorders with numerous clinical characteristics, with an incidence of 7 in 10000 born alive children. Ectodermal dysplasia affects structures of ectodermal origin like the skin and its appendages as well as other non-ectodermal structures. The most common sites of involvement are the defects in the skin, hair, teeth, nails and sweat glands, which are of ectodermal origin. Though the dermatologists and paediatricians often manage such cases, we report one case of ectodermal dysplasia presenting with atrophic rhinitis.

Ectodermal dysplasia: Retrospective study of fifteen cases.

The aim of this article is to review possible cranio-maxillofacial deformative consequences associated with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and embryonic malformations, which include dental ageneses, and describe the oral habilitation. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia patients had a clinical examination and underwent radiographic and Steiner's analyses and a respiratory capability test before assessment and treatment. Fifteen patients (eight males and seven females, aged 5-45 years) had tooth ageneses (from hypodontia to anodontia) associated with cutaneous dyshydrosis and hair and nail dys

[Prosthetic rehabilitation in ectodermal dysplasia. Case report].

The oral and dental rehabilitation of patients with ectodermal dysplasia is a demanding and complex process. Close cooperation of medical and dental specialists is is mandatory. The individual age related situation and aspects of social integration have to be considered, when doing treatment planning for these patients. A major problem is the highly reduced number of teeth, the impaired development of the jaws and the dysplastic alteration of the teeth. The prosthodontic rehabilitation of a young girl with the congenital disease of ectodermal dysplasia is presented and discussed.

Ectodermal dysplasia with acanthosis nigricans (Lelis syndrome).

A 31-year-old male patient with ectodermal dysplasia and acanthosis nigricans is described. Clinical findings included hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis, palmoplantar hyperkeratosis, nail dystrophy, early onset loss of permanent dentition, mental retardation, and acanthosis nigricans. The findings suggest the diagnosis of Lelis syndrome, as described on the basis of seven unrelated cases. A review concerning this condition is also presented.

Salivary gland involvement in hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a group of developmental disorders (more than 100) mainly affecting ectodermal tissues and organs. The X-linked hypohidrotic ED (HED) is the most common form of EDs, involving defects in teeth, sweat glands, and hair. In a few reports, HED has been associated with reduced salivary function. In the present case report, a dramatically reduced salivary fluid and acidic proline rich protein production was identified in a 38-year-old man with HED. Computed tomography was performed, revealing that one submandibular gland and both parotid glands were hypoplastic, where

Eccrine syringofibroadenomatosis associated with hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Eccrine syringofibroadenoma (ES) is generally regarded as a solitary benign adnexal neoplasm of the skin. Recently, the epithelial and stromal changes of this lesion have been recognized as being a reaction pattern in certain settings. We describe two individuals in whom this process was a manifestation of hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. In both cases, the diagnosis had been missed for many years and the process had been thought to be a manifestation of an inflammatory dermatosis of the palms and soles. In both instances, other family members were found to be affected. Thus, ES may be manifeste

Family with "pure" hair-nail ectodermal dysplasia.

"Pure" ectodermal dysplasias are developmental disorders affecting only tissues of ectodermal origin. Two different pure ectodermal dysplasias involving only hair and nails have been described to date. Here we describe congenital nail dystrophy and hypotrichosis associated with folliculitis decalvans in a family suggesting autosomal-dominant transmission. This report documents peculiar clinical and ultrastructural hair findings that fit poorly into previously described conditions. Thus the reported patients could represent a new type of pure ectodermal dysplasia.

Hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia affecting a female patient.

Ectodermal dysplasia syndromes are extremely rare. Hypohydrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (HED) is classically an X-linked recessive condition affecting males, although a clinically identical autosomal recessive form of this condition has been described. The patient described in this article is female, who was initially thought to be a manifesting carrier for X-linked HED. However, the pedigree and examination of other family members suggest that she has the rarer autosomal recessive form. The patient is also edentulous and requires complete dentures, a concept regarded by many as a novelty in youn

Ectodermal dysplasia, Rapp-Hodgkin type in a mother and severe ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC) in her child.

We describe a mother with manifestations most consistent with the Rapp-Hodgkin type of ectodermal dysplasia and her malformed newborn son with ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft palate, and bilateral cystic and obstructive ureteroceles with hydroureters and cystic renal dysplasia as described in the EEC syndrome. This observation suggests that the Rapp-Hodgkin type of ectodermal dysplasia and EEC syndrome, both defined as autosomal dominant conditions with variable expression, may be manifestations of the same mutated gene. We also want to emphasize that urogenital anomaly is another ha

Death due to complications of anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia comprises a group of disorders affecting ectodermal tissues. Severity depends on the genetic aberration; hyperpyrexia secondary to absence of sweat glands is a common complication. Treatment is supportive. This case report describes a 1-month, 27-day-old male infant with a diagnosis of X-linked recessive anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. On the day of his death, his mother swaddled him in a blanket and placed him on the couch at 5:30 am. When she picked him up at 8:00 am, he was unresponsive. At the emergency department, his rectal temperature was 40°C. Postmortem blood cul

Nectinopathies: an emerging group of ectodermal dysplasia syndromes.

Cleft Lip/Palate-Ectodermal Dysplasia and Ectodermal Dysplasia-Syndactyly Syndrome are rare congenital disorders caused by recessive mutations in the PVRL1 and PVRL4 genes, respectively. These genes encode nectins 1 and 4, an emerging class of molecules acting in cooperation with cadherins to form cell-cell adhesion especially at adherens junctions. Their role in skin, hair and teeth biology and in the fine-tuning morphogenesis of craniofacial (lip/palate) and limbs is yet to be outlined prompting future research. We propose refer to these entities (nectin 1-ED and nectin 4-ED) as "nectinopath

Ear nose throat manifestations in hypoidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

The ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) are a large and complex group of inherited disorders. In various combinations, they all share anomalies in ectodermal derived structures: hair, teeth, nails and sweat gland function. Clinical overlap is present among EDs. Few causative genes have been identified, to date. Altered gene expression is not limited to the ectoderm but a concomitant effect on developing mesenchymal structures, with modification of ectodermal-mesenchymal signaling, takes place. The two major categories of ED include the hidrotic and hypohidrotic form, the latter more frequent; they dif

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome-plastic surgeon's considerations.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome is a rare autosomally dominant disorder phenotypically characterized by specific abnormalities of the hand, feet, and orofacial region coexisting with ectodermal dysplasia features. The purpose of this study was to describe the plastic surgeon's approach to EEC treatment by retrospective analysis of the course of surgical treatment. METHODS: Medical documentation of 10 patients with EEC syndrome treated in the Department of Plastic Surgery in Polanica Zdroj in the years 1976-2008 was given retrospective analysis. RESULTS:
