Elbow dislocation associated with ipsilateral radial shaft fracture is an infrequent injury (nine cases reported in the literature). We present six new cases observed between 2006 and 2012, with an average age of 31 years and a mean follow-up of 18 months. The forearm fracture and ipsilateral dislocation of the elbow were probably caused by forearm hypersupination with extension of the elbow. The dislocation was reduced by manipulation before open reduction and osteosynthesis of the forearm fracture. Four elbows were stable after reduction; two markedly unstable elbows necessitated temporary h

Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral diaphyseal fracture of both radius and ulna is a rare injury. However, elbow dislocation with either radius or ulnar diaphyseal fracture is commonly reported. We report an uncommon injury of a 16 years old male who had his elbow dislocation with ipsilateral both bones forearm fractures. Elbow dislocation was reduced and fracture both bones were fixed with dynamic compression plate under brachial block.

We report 2 cases of elbow fracture dislocation with triceps avulsion. Despite immobilizing the elbow in neutral for 2 to 4 weeks to protect the triceps repair, good elbow motion was obtained.

PURPOSE: To report outcomes in 6 patients with the terrible triad of the elbow treated with our modified protocol.
METHODS: 6 men aged 26 to 54 years underwent surgery for the terrible triad of the elbow by a single surgeon. All the patients had a displaced comminuted fracture of the radius, posterior dislocation of the elbow, and Morrey type-I fracture of the coronoid. They all underwent replacement of the radial head and repair of the lateral collateral ligament to the isometric part of the lateral condyle using suture anchors. Five had an additional capsular fixation to the anterior corono

Posterior interosseous nerve palsy following elbow surgery is not uncommon. Nevertheless, precise etiology of the palsy is rarely described in the literature. In this paper the possible causes of the posterior interosseous nerve palsy are reviewed and an uncommon iatrogenic lesion after surgical treatment of an elbow fracture is reported.

Six cases of old unreduced Monteggia fracture dislocation are reported. All cases were treated by surgical reconstruction. The author concludes that the essential feature of a stable result is complete correction of the ulna deformity. It is suggested that the natural history of unreduced Monteggia fracture dislocations is not benign and surgical treatment < or = 6 years after the initial injury appears justified. The surgical technique is described.

An exceptional case of posterior dislocation of the ulna at the elbow, associated with fracture of the radial shaft, is reported. Diagnosis was established with anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the forearm, elbow and wrist. Treatment consisted of closed reduction of the ulnar dislocation and open reduction and internal fixation of the radius with an AO plate. A long arm cast was applied for 3 weeks with the elbow held at 90 degrees. Six months later full function of the limb had been achieved.

All too often, the labors of manipulation and anatomical reduction of a supracondylar humeral fracture of the elbow requiring, perhaps, an hour or two, are noticed to be lost once the patients' follow-up radiographs are seen. It is our feeling that the reduction is lost when the forearm is externally rotated for the lateral view of the elbow. To prevent this, we recommend placing the X-ray cassette in the axilla to obtain the true lateral view, thus preventing the unsupervised rotation of the fracture.

While the relationship between radial head fractures (RHF) and coronoid process fractures (CPF) is biomechanically established, the exact frequency of CPF in RHF patients without focus on elbow dislocations is underexplored. To better estimate the likelihood of CPF, the analysis of typical fracture constellations is useful. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze the correlation between RHF severity and the presence and type of CPF. This retrospective study analyzed 356 RHF patients, evaluating the prevalence and correlation of CPF using CT and intraoperative data. Only cases with confi

Humeral shaft fractures combined with elbow dislocation and fracture of the distal third of the bones of the forearm are uncommon. No description of this simultaneous association has been found in the same patient. Some studies report the association of these two lesions; however, no reports on the three ipsilateral lesions have been found at the PubMed, Lilacs and Bireme databases. The present report describes a case that occurred in a 13-year-old boy who suffered a fall from a height of approximately three meters and was admitted to a trauma hospital. Radiographs showed an ipsilateral humera

OBJECTIVES: Floating elbow is a rare injury type in pediatric fractures. This study compared the differences in injury mechanisms, treatment modalities, complications and prognosis between floating elbow injury and supracondylar humerus fractures (SHF) in children in a surgically treated cohort.
METHODS: The retrospective analysis included patients with floating elbow and SHF treated at our hospital between May 2016 and May 2023. Sex, age, body mass index (BMI), mechanism of injury, affected limb, fracture displacement, presence of neurovascularinjury, type of injury, Gartland classification,

BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroplasty (EA) is an established technique for the treatment of select distal humeral fractures, yet little data exists regarding the safety and outcome of EA in the presence of an open distal humeral fracture where the risk of periprosthetic infection is an even greater concern. We hypothesized that EA does not carry an increased risk of infection or other postoperative complications when performed for simple open distal humeral fractures.
METHODS: Seventeen patients underwent total EA (n = 9) or hemiarthroplasty (n = 8) for an open distal humeral fracture. The open frac

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar fracture usually occurs as a result of fall on an outstretched hand. Prompt management is essential to prevent complications. Functional outcome after management of this fracture may be predicted by some factors.
AIMS: The study aimed to review the management of supracondylar fractures and determine what factors have an impact on the functional outcome of the elbow using MEPS score in the early post-operative period.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective study of all patients with supracondylar fractures that presented at the accident and emergency de

Radial head and coronoid fractures without posterior dislocation of the elbow have not been recorded in the literature. There is no literature documenting the combined fractures of the radial head, capitellum and coronoid process together in the same elbow. This is a case report highlighting this combination of fractures in a 30 year old patient treated with open reduction and internal fixation of all three fractures. The patient was followed up for 28 months and had a good range of motion of the elbow without any instability. Thus such a triad with no ligamentous injuries could depict a bony

Elbow dislocation associated with both ipsilateral radial and ulnar shaft fractures is a rare pattern of injury, although it is common for elbow dislocation and forearm fractures to occur separately. We report a case of an 80-year-old woman who had a posterolateral elbow dislocation and ipsilateral radial and ulnar shaft fractures and underwent closed reduction and plate fixation. She had an excellent outcome after 22 months of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The results of elbow dislocations with associated radial head and coronoid fractures are often poor because of recurrent instability and stiffness from prolonged immobilization. We managed these injuries with a standard surgical protocol, postulating that early intervention, stable fixation, and repair would provide sufficient stability to allow motion at seven to ten days postoperatively and enhance functional outcome.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the results of this treatment performed, at two university-affiliated teaching hospitals, in thirty-six consecutive patients (
