Sweeping injuries of the elbow characterized by traumatic loss of medial or lateral epicondyles, collateral ligaments, and surrounding soft tissue result in loss of joint stability. Reconstruction of medial or lateral collateral ligaments is challenging due to loss of the cortical bone and the resultant difficulty in identifying the isometric attachment point. We describe a unique injury pattern and a surgical technique to restore joint stability using a bone tendon (Achilles) allograft. The technique was applied to 4 consecutive patients with a mean age of 35 (22-57) years and a mean follow-u

BACKGROUND: There is paucity of literature describing complex elbow trauma in the pediatric population. We described a case of an uncommon p … neventful recovery with an excellent outcome at 39 months follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Complex pediatric elbow injuries are quite unusual to encounter, the management of such fractures can be technically demanding. Concomitant elbow dislocation should be managed by closed reduction followed by open reduction and internal fixation (K-wires or cannulated screws) of the …

The basic role of the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, and wrist is to place the hand in the appropriate position, so that it can fulfill its function. The upper extremity, especially the wrist and the hand, has a very complex anatomy with a large number of bones, muscles, tendons and nerves. They are essential to work and sport activities and are subject to acute and/or chronic mechanical injuries. This is why overuse injuries are the most common in these regions. They are often characterised by tendinitis, tenosynovitis, tunnel syndromes, or stress fractures. This paper gives an overview

PURPOSE: This study compared medial elbow torque in youth baseball pitchers with and without a history of medial elbow injuries to determine the relationship between medial elbow torque during pitching and having a history of medial elbow injuries.
METHODS: We recruited 171 youth baseball pitchers aged 9 to 12 years old. The exclusion criteria included current pain with pitching, history of surgery on the tested extremity, or osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral capitellum. The participants were grouped into 3 groups: injury <1-year, injury >1-year, and control, based on ultrasonographic …

INTRODUCTION: The "terrible triad" injury of the elbow, consisting of fractures of the coronoid process and radial head along with posterolateral elbow dislocation and refractory instability, has historically led to poor functional outcomes. Traditional treatment focused on bony injuries, but it is now recognized that soft-tissue injuries must also be addressed. Surgical management aims to restore bony and soft-tissue stabilizers, including fixation of the coronoid process and radial head, repair of ligament complexes, and reduction of elbow dislocation. Studies emphasize the importance of ear

BACKGROUND: Combined injuries of ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints are rare in clinical practice, characterized by multiple joint dislocations or/and fractures and varying manifestations. As there are still no clinical guidelines and no consensus on the standard treatment, this study aimed to explore the surgical intervention and complications of this kind of combined injuries.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a single center. A total of 13 patients with acute combined injuries of the ipsilateral wrist and elbow joints receiving surgical treatment from August 2013 to May 20

BACKGROUND: Monteggia-like fractures (MLF) are complex injuries with high complication rates and frequently unsatisfying clinical results. Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) represents the only option to salvage the functional requirements in some patients with pronounced posttraumatic arthropathy. This case series provides clinical results of TEA following failed treatment of MLF.
METHODS: All patients who underwent TEA from 2017 to 2022 for failed treatment of MLF were retrospectively included in this study. Complications and revisions before and after TEA and functional results, measured by th

BACKGROUND: The incidence of throwing-related elbow injuries is still rising. The study aimed to enhance the pathology of acute medial elbow injuries among young Little Leaguers by examining the medial elbows of symptomatic 9-10 years old Little Leaguers using High-Definition Magnetic Resonance Images (HDMRI), which uses a small-diameter surface coil on the target area, leading to greater image resolution.
METHOD: We identified Little Leaguers aged 9-10 years old. To minimize the detection of the chronic adaptative changes, players who experienced the medial elbow pain previously and whose HD…

The surgical procedures for and outcomes of soft tissue constraint reconstruction in complex elbow instability have been rarely investigated. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical outcomes in a series of patients with complex elbow instability in whom the associated soft tissue constraint injures were identified and treated based on the pathoanatomic changes found intraoperatively. Forty-five patients (23 men and 22 women; mean age, 54 years) with complex elbow instability were followed prospectively. Surgical treatment included the anatomic reduction and internal fixation of a

Osteoarthritis of nonknee joints, although less common than knee osteoarthritis, remains a significant and disabling condition for many present and former athletes. These injuries can be caused by repeated loads or following a specific traumatic event. The resulting pain and loss of motion can limit function and ability. Arthroscopic techniques in many cases enable surgeons to symptomatically treat limitations of range of motion and pain, prolonging active careers. Joint replacement remains the ultimate solution for hip osteoarthritis, and may be a viable option in ankle osteoarthritis.

Despite technical advances, the ability to restore motor function following a brachial plexus avulsion is limited. Twenty patients who suffered the loss of elbow flexion following a brachial plexus avulsion injury underwent a neurotization procedure in an attempt to restore that lost function. Of 16 patients who underwent intercostal to musculocutaneous nerve anastomosis, seven obtained good elbow flexion. Four patients who no longer had a viable biceps brachialis muscle underwent an anastomosis between transposed intercostal nerves and a free vascularized gracilis muscle grafted to the positi

Sixty-two patients older than 16 years of age at the time of injury were reexamined an average of five years (range, 1 to 12 years) after a dislocation of the elbow without concomitant fracture. Thirty-four were treated nonsurgically with closed reduction and immobilization in a plaster cast. Twenty-eight were treated surgically with primary ligament repair followed by immobilization in plaster. Ligament repair was performed medially in all cases and laterally in 17, on the average two days after injury. At follow-up examination, the most common complaint in both groups was limited range of mo

BACKGROUND: Long-toss throwing is a common practice in baseball for arm strengthening, arm recovery, and as part of an interval throwing program after elbow surgery. However, the effect of long-toss throwing on the throwing elbow remains controversial, with limited studies. Different long-toss techniques, such as using a crow-hop and varying the throw trajectory, may influence elbow stress and injury risk. This study investigated the association between long-toss distance, technique, and subjective elbow symptoms and clinical findings among high school baseball pitchers.
OBJECTIVE: The object
