[Viscosity determination of synovial fluids from the canine hip and elbow joint as well as the human knee joint].

The development of pathological changes in both human and canine hip joints is mainly caused by a lack of synovial fluid lubrication. This r … son the viscosities of synovial fluid, derived from physiological and pathologically changed canine elbow joints were measured. The viscosities were determined by the use of a cone-plate viscometer at different temperatures and shear rates. The obtained values were compared with the viscosity values of pathologically changed synovial fluids from human knee jo …

Characteristics and outcome of 27 elbow periprosthetic joint infections: results from a 14-year cohort study of 358 elbow prostheses.

Elbow arthroplasty is increasingly performed in patients with rheumatic and post-traumatic arthritis. Data on elbow periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are limited. We investigated the characteristics and outcome of elbow PJI in a 14-year cohort of total elbow arthroplasties in a single centre. Elbow prosthesis, which were implanted between 1994 and 2007 at Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, were retrospectively screened for infection. PJI was defined as periprosthetic purulence, the presence of sinus tract or microbial growth. A Kaplan-Meier survival method and Cox proportional hazard analysis wer

Perforator flap reconstruction for post-burn flexion contracture of the elbow joint.

BACKGROUND: Post-burn elbow flexion contractures significantly impair upper-limb function by restricting the essential functional arc of motion required for activities such as self-care, feeding, hygiene, and vocational tasks. Standard management using contracture release and skin grafting is limited by high rates of recontracture due to secondary graft contraction. Locoregional perforator flaps based on the radial recurrent or ulnar recurrent vessels are often missed, even though they offer thin, pliable, and durable tissue. This study evaluates the flap surface area required to resurface the

Treatment of elbow periprosthetic joint infection: a systematic review of clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the elbow is a relatively common complication after total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), and its treatment is frequently variable. Few articles have provided direct comparisons of outcomes, making it difficult to draw conclusions from the available literature. This systematic review synthesizes the English-language literature on elbow PJI to quantify treatment outcomes. METHODS: The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched in December 2018. Our review was performed in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-

Secondary purulent infections of the elbow joint: a retrospective, single-center study.

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis of the elbow joint is a rare condition. Limited data is available on infections of the elbow joint following trauma or prior surgery on this joint. The aim of this study was to describe the etiology, comorbidities, bacterial spectrum and therapy of secondary purulent elbow infections. METHODS: Patients treated in our hospital were selected through retrospective chart review between 2006 and 2015. We included all patients with an empyema of the elbow after a trauma or surgical intervention on this joint. 30 patients between 26 and 82 years (mean: 52.47) were includ…

Elbow Positioning and Joint Insufflation Substantially Influence Median and Radial Nerve Locations.

BACKGROUND: The median and radial nerves are at risk of iatrogenic injury when performing arthroscopic arthrolysis with anterior capsulectomy. Although prior anatomic studies have identified the position of these nerves, little is known about how elbow positioning and joint insufflation might influence nerve locations. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: In a cadaver model, we sought to determine whether (1) the locations of the median and radial nerves change with variation of elbow positioning; and whether (2) flexion and joint insufflation increase the distance of the median and radial nerves to osseous l

Oblique osteochondral plugs transplantation technique for osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow joint.

Autologous osteochondral transplantation is an established surgical procedure for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the knee, and has recently been applied in cases of advanced-staged OCD of the elbow. The elbow procedure; however, is more technically demanding than for the knee. One reason is the difficulties of perpendicular insertion of large-diameter osteochondral plugs to the humeral capitellum with a small, narrow operative field in the humeroradial joint. Furthermore, if the OCD lesion is located on the lateral site of the capitellum, the creation of recipient holes perpendicular to th

Outcomes of elbow fracture-dislocations treated with and without an Internal Joint Stabilizer of the Elbow (IJS-E): A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The internal joint stabilizer of the elbow (IJS-E) adds to techniques for maintaining reduction of elbow fracture-dislocations while allowing early motion. Literature on this device is limited to small case series. METHODS: Retrospective comparison of function, motion and complications in patients who sustained elbow fracture-dislocations reconstructed with (30 patients) and without (34 patients) an IJS-E by a single surgeon. The minimum follow up was 10 weeks. RESULTS: The mean follow up was 16 ± 17 months. The mean final flexion arc did not differ between the two groups, howeve

Biomechanical influence of pin placement and elbow angle on joint distraction and hinge alignment for an arthrodiatasis elbow-pin-fixator construct.

Stiffness and contracture of the periarticular tissues are common complications of a post-traumatic elbow. Arthrodiatasis is a surgical technique that uses an external fixator for initial immobilization and subsequent distraction. The two prerequisites for an ideal arthrodiatasis are concentric distraction (avoiding bony contact) and hinge alignment (reducing internal stress). This study used the finite element (FE) method to clarify the relationship between these two prerequisites and the initial conditions (pin placement, elbow angle, and distraction mode). A total of 12 variations of the in

Diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced CT for elbow joint disorders in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography (CT) with intravenous contrast agents can provide additional diagnostic information. To our knowledge, no previous study has evaluated the role of contrast agents in CT imaging of the canine elbow joint. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of post-contrast imaging. METHODS: A total of 326 elbow joints from 163 dogs with unilateral or bilateral lameness caused by elbow joint pathology were examined using radiography and CT, both with and without contrast agents. Diagnoses assessed from radiographs and CT scans in the bone window included primary di…

Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Around the Elbow Joint That Required Upper Arm Amputation.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a relatively rare benign proliferative disorder of the synovium, and it commonly occurs in the knee joint. A unique case of huge PVNS originating around the elbow joint that required upper arm amputation is reported. A 74-year-old woman had a 5-month history of right elbow pain and noticed a mass measuring 8 × 5 cm on the olecranon side. She had a past history of undergoing tumor resection and flap surgery 9 years earlier, diagnosed as a giant cell tumor involving the right elbow region. She had chronic renal failure, with a shunt on the right forearm…

Aseptic Destruction of the Elbow Joint after Radial Head Replacement. Case Study.

Radial head replacement should be a routine treatment in cases of non-reconstructable radial head fractures. With the growing number of radial head arthroplasties, we are going to see more complications related to this procedure. We describe a case of aseptic destruction of the elbow joint, probably related to the release of polyethylene particles from the prosthetic head. Removal of the implant and extensive synovectomy was performed, leading to an excellent clinical outcome with reduction of pain and increase in the range of motion. The clinical improvement was not accompanied by radiographi…

Elbow clinical, ultrasonographic and radiographic study in patients with inflammatory joint diseases.

The main objective of this cross-sectional observational study was to investigate the relationship between clinical, ultrasonographic (US) and radiographic elbow features in patients with inflammatory joint diseases (IJD). The secondary objective was to evaluate the association between regional clinical elbow diagnoses and imaging findings. Consecutive patients with IJD attending follow-up visits were assessed for elbow pain and standardized elbow examination. Seven regional clinical diagnoses were defined. Digital elbow radiographs were read for 9 abnormalities. A standardized elbow grayscale

The management of elbow instability using an internal joint stabilizer: preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical and surgical treatments such as immobilization, transarticular pinning, and hinged or nonhinged external fixation have been used to treat unstable elbows. These methods all have drawbacks. We thought that a bent Steinmann pin introduced through the axis of ulnohumeral rotation and attached to the ulna could provide an improved method of treatment and that this could result in the development of a proper internal joint fixator that may have widespread application. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Does a fully internal hinged fixator crafted intraoperatively by the surgeon from a Ste

Does cubitus varus cause morphologic and alignment changes in the elbow joint?

BACKGROUND: In cubitus varus after pediatric supracondylar fracture, late development of trochlear deformity causing additional varus angulation and joint misalignment relating to late complications of the tardy ulnar nerve palsy or posterolateral rotatory instability have been suggested. However, it is unclear whether these morphologic and alignment changes of the elbow joint occur in cubitus varus. The object of this study was to investigate morphologic changes of the bones and alignment changes of the elbow joint in longstanding cubitus varus using 3-dimensional computer bone models created…

Biepicondylar fracture dislocation of the elbow joint concomitant with ulnar nerve injury.

In this article, we present a case of humeral biepicondylar fracture dislocation concomitant with ulnar nerve injury in a seventeen year-old male patient. Physical examination of our patient in the emergency room revealed a painful, edematous and deformed-looking left elbow joint. Hypoesthesia of the little finger was also diagnosed on the left hand. Radiological assessment ended up with a posterior fracture dislocation of the elbow joint accompanied by intra-articular loose bodies. Open reduction-Internal fixation of the fracture dislocation and ulnar nerve exploration were performed under ge…
