Healing Efficiency of CNTs-Modified-UF Microcapsules That Provide Higher Electrical Conductivity and EMI Shielding Properties.

In this study, the effect of the addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), at three percentages, into the urea-formaldehyde (UF) shell-wall of microcapsules on the healing efficiency is reported. The modified shell-wall created a conductive network in semi-conductive epoxies, which led to an improvement of the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE); utilizing the excellent electrical properties of the CNTs. The microcapsule's mean diameter and shell wall were examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal stability was evaluated via thermogravimetric

Structure, electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties of perovskite-type oxides CaMn1-x-yTixFeyO3-δ.

Calcium manganite-based perovskite-type oxides hold promise for application in chemical looping combustion processes and oxygen transport membranes. In this study, we have investigated the structure, electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties of perovskite-type oxides CaMn1-x-yTixFeyO3-δ. Distinct from previous work, data of high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) in the temperature range 600-1000 °C (with intervals of 25 °C) demonstrates that CaMnO3-δ (CM) transforms from orthorhombic to a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases between 875 °C and 900 °C. Cardiac intramural electrical mapping reveals focal delays but no conduction velocity slowing in the peri-infarct region.

Altered electrical behavior alongside healed myocardial infarcts (MIs) is associated with increased risk of sudden cardiac death. However, the multidimensional mechanisms are poorly understood and described. This study characterizes, for the first time, the intramural spread of electrical activation in the peri-infarct region of chronic reperfusion MIs. Four sheep were studied 13 wk after antero-apical reperfusion infarction. Extracellular potentials (ECPs) were recorded in a ~20 × 20-mm2 region adjacent to the infarct boundary (25 plunge needles <0.5-mm diameter with 15 electrodes at 1-mm cen

Differential fiber-specific block of nerve conduction in mammalian peripheral nerves using kilohertz electrical stimulation.

Kilohertz electrical stimulation (KES) has been shown to induce repeatable and reversible nerve conduction block in animal models. In this study, we characterized the ability of KES stimuli to selectively block specific components of stimulated nerve activity using in vivo preparations of the rat sciatic and vagus nerves. KES stimuli in the frequency range of 5-70 kHz and amplitudes of 0.1-3.0 mA were applied. Compound action potentials were evoked using either electrical or sensory stimulation, and block of components was assessed through direct nerve recordings and muscle force measurements.

Exposures to conducted electrical weapons (including TASER® devices): how many and for how long are acceptable?

TASER(®) conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are an important law-enforcement tool. The purposes of this study are a) to review recent literature regarding potential pathophysiological responses to applications of CEWs, and other related issues and b) to evaluate whether enough data exist to determine the acceptability of longer-duration (or repeated) exposures. This is a narrative review, using a multidisciplinary approach of analyzing reports from physiological, legal-medical, and police-strategy literature sources. In general, short-duration exposures to CEWs result in limited effects. Long

Self-assembly of carboxylic acid appended naphthalene diimide derivatives with tunable luminescent color and electrical conductivity.

Self-assembly of a series of carboxylic acid-functionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI) chromophores with a varying number (n=1-4) of methylene spacers between the NDI ring and the carboxylic acid group has been studied. The derivatives show pronounced aggregation due to the synergistic effects of H-bonding between the carboxylic acid groups in a syn-syn catemer motif and π stacking between the NDI chromophores. Solvent-dependent UV/Vis studies reveal the existence of monomeric dye molecules in a "good" solvent such as chloroform and self-assembly in "bad" solvents such as methylcyclohexane. The

Slow conduction in cardiac tissue, I: effects of a reduction of excitability versus a reduction of electrical coupling on microconduction.

It was the aim of this study to characterize the spread of activation at the cellular level in cardiac tissue during conduction slowing, a key element of reentrant arrhythmias; therefore, activation patterns were assessed at high spatiotemporal resolution in narrow (70 to 80 microm) and wide (230 to 270 microm) linear strands of cultured neonatal rat ventricular myocytes, using multiple site optical recording of transmembrane voltage. Slow conduction was induced by graded elevation of [K+]o, by applying tetrodotoxin, or by exposing the preparations to the gap junctional uncouplers palmitoleic

Alterations of bone conducted hearing in cases of modified middle ear mechanics. Conclusions from an electrical model.

In clinical diagnosis bone conduction thresholds can be used to assess impaired hearing caused by pathological function of the inner ear. The effects of changed mechanical properties of the middle ear on bone conduction are usually not considered in patients who simultaneously suffer from middle ear and inner ear diseases. This procedure is only partially correct. An exact determination of the effects of altered middle ear mechanics on bone conduction in patients with otosclerosis or after middle ear operations is rather difficult, but such determinations can improve diagnostic validity. Laser microbeam axotomy and conduction block show that electrical transmission at a central synapse is distributed at multiple contacts.

Touch (T) sensory neurons in the leech innervate defined regions of skin and synapse on other neurons, including other T cells, within the ganglionic neuropil. The cells' receptive fields in the periphery are comprised of a central region, innervated by thick axons, and adjoining regions (minor fields) innervated by thinner axons. Secondary branches, known to be sites of synapses, emerge from the thinner and thicker axons. Pairs of T cells appear to make up to 200 separate contacts distributed within the neuropil. When the T cell is hyperpolarized, as occurs during natural stimulation of the c

Brainstem electric response audiometry: estimation of the amount of conductive hearing loss with and without use of the response threshold.

Three aspects of brainstem response audiometry were investigated in the present study. (1) The brainstem response threshold was compared with the pure-tone audiogram in 40 patients with conductive hearing loss. The brainstem response threshold has a one-to-one relationship with the mean of the pure-tone thresholds at 2 and 4 kHz. The correlation coefficient in this comparison is 0.84 and the standard error of the estimate is 8.3 dB. Taking into account corresponding results in cochlear hearing loss [Drift et al.: Audiology 26: 1-10, 1987] it is concluded that the brainstem response threshold p

Micro-CT-Based Experimental Study on the 3D Structure-Electrical Conductivity Relationship of Metal-Coated Woven Fabrics.

The investigated materials were metal-coated woven fabrics. X-ray micro-computed tomography was employed to characterize the fabrics, including their coating, yarn, and pore structures. Electrical resistance was measured using a four-electrode configuration inspired by the van der Pauw method. The obtained results revealed strong relationships between structural parameters and electrical properties of fabrics. Multidirectional resistance measurements confirmed continuous electrical conduction and low resistance values. Correlation analysis revealed that a thicker metal coating on the fabric su

Monitoring Alzheimer's disease-related fluid microenvironment changes using magnetic resonance-based electrical conductivity imaging.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) status is an indicator of pathological feature associated with metabolic waste clearance dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression. Magnetic resonance-based conductivity imaging provides novel contrast sensitive to ion concentration, mobility, and microstructural changes. We applied conductivity imaging to 5xFAD mice and age-matched wild-type controls using 9.4 T MRI, measuring regional conductivity in ventricular CSF, caudate putamen, cerebral cortex, thalamus, and hippocampus. AD mice showed ventricular enlargement with significantly elevated CSF conductiv

Polyphenol Conductive Nanozyme-Enhanced Redox Hydrogel Coupled with Vagus Nerve Electrical Stimulation for Diabetic Wound Repair.

Diabetic wound repair is complicated by excessive oxidative reactions, bacterial infection, and persistent inflammation. Nanozyme-incorporated hydrogels have shown potential to facilitate diabetic wound repair. This study developed a polyphenol-conductive nanozyme-enhanced redox hydrogel composed of dopamine-grafted fish gelatin, methacrylated silk fibroin, and dopamine-mediated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDA-Fe-PEDOT) conductive nanozymes. The PDA-Fe-PEDOT conductive nanozyme confers electrical conductivity to the hydrogel, enabling it to couple endogenous electrical signals at the wou

Liquid Metal-Based Conductive Nerve Guidance Conduit Combined With Electrical Stimulation Boosts Peripheral Nerve Repair.

The combination of nerve guide conduits (NGCs) and electrical stimulation (ES) is an effective treatment for peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Flexible conductive materials with mechanical properties similar to those of biological tissues have been shown to have better long-term biointegration and functionality than rigid conductive materials. In this study, liquid metal (LM)-based conductive polycaprolactone/gelatin/polypyrrole/LM (PCL/Gel/PPy/LM, PGPL) NGC was combined with exogenous ES to repair PNI. PGPL membranes had good hydrophilicity, degradability, and mechanical properties, and its cond

Electrically-driven drug delivery into deep cutaneous tissue by conductive microneedles for fungal infection eradication and protective immunity.

Fungal infections affect over 13 million people worldwide and are responsible for 1.5 million deaths annually. Some deep cutaneous fungal infections may extend the dermal barriers to cause systemic infection, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality. However, the management of deep cutaneous fungal infection is challenging and yet overlooked by traditional treatments, which only offer limited drug availability within deep tissue. In this study, we have developed an electrically stimulated microneedle patch to deliver miconazole into the subcutaneous layer. We tested its antifungal effi

Electrically Conductive Collagen-PEDOT:PSS Hydrogel Prevents Post-Infarct Cardiac Arrhythmia and Supports hiPSC-Cardiomyocyte Function.

Myocardial infarction (MI) causes cell death, disrupts electrical activity, triggers arrhythmia, and results in heart failure, whereby 50-60% of MI-associated deaths manifest as sudden cardiac deaths (SCD). The most effective therapy for SCD prevention is implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). However, ICDs contribute to adverse remodeling and disease progression and do not prevent arrhythmia. This work develops an injectable collagen-PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate) hydrogel that protects infarcted hearts against ventricular tachycardia (VT) and can
