Design and testing of a new electrode for laryngeal electromyography.

Electromyography of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles has not been widely used, partly because of the difficulty of accurate insertion and stabilization of existing electrodes. The sampling portion of our original electrode has been redesigned. Two needle electrodes, 4 mm in length, protrude from a truncated coneshaped, nonconducting body that has been fashioned to sit in the laryngeal ventricle. The depth of insertion is controlled, and the device resists accidental extrusion.

Estimation of Respiratory Effort Through Diaphragmatic Electromyography Features.

Respiratory effort is a critical parameter for assessing respiratory function in various pathological conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as well as in patients undergoing respiratory ventilation. Currently, the gold-standard method for measuring it is esophageal pressure (Pes), which is obtrusive and uncomfortable for patients. An alternative approach is using diaphragmatic electromyography (dEMG), a non-obtrusive method that directly reflects the electrical drive triggering respiratory effort, holding potential for quantifying effort. Despite progress in this area, there is sti…

Demographic-Driven Electromyography Analysis: Advancing Personalized Biosignal Interpretation.

The integration of rehabilitation robotics and surface electromyography (sEMG) offers a powerful approach for monitoring and enhancing recovery in patients with neuromuscular disorders. However, variability in baseline sEMG readings across individuals can limit its effectiveness. Factors such as age, height, and weight influence these baselines, and there is a lack of personalized baselines that account for demographic differences. This study proposes a novel model to estimate individualized baselines for one important sEMG parameter, Root Mean Square (RMS). Demographics and physiological data…

Electromyography findings in radiation-induced unilateral tongue immobility.

BACKGROUND: We used electromyography to characterize hypoglossal nerve function among radiation-treated head and neck cancer survivors with later onset unilateral tongue immobility. METHODS: Patients with unilateral tongue immobility without evidence of recurrent cancer were seen at a tertiary academic institution between February and September 2021. All patients were at least 2 years post-treatment with radiation therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Participants were under annual surveillance and displayed no evidence of operative injury to the hypoglossal nerve. RESULTS: The …

Ultrasonography-guided electromagnetic needle tracking in laryngeal electromyography.

PURPOSE: The clinical evaluation of vocal fold movement disorders should contain the electromyography of the laryngeal muscles (LEMG). The most challenging point in LEMG is the right positioning of the EMG needle in the small target muscles. As the results of the EMG have great influence in the decision of treatment it is important to confirm the results of this examination. Anatomical structures of the larynx should be identified with laryngeal ultrasonography and the ultrasonography (US)-guided electromagnetic needle tracking should guide the LEMG needle to the target muscle. METHODS: The t…

Diaphragm electromyography using an oesophageal catheter: current concepts.

The usefulness of diaphragm electromyography recorded from an oesophageal electrode depends on a reliable signal which is free of artefact. The diaphragm EMG (electromyogram) recorded from chest wall surface electrodes may be unreliable because of signal contamination from muscle activity other than the diaphragm. Initially, the oesophageal electrode catheter for human studies had only one electrode pair, which could be difficult to position accurately and was influenced by a change in lung volume. Recently, a multipair oesophageal electrode has been developed which allows a high-quality EMG t…

Laryngeal electromyography: contribution to vocal fold immobility diagnosis.

Laryngeal Electromyography (LEMG) is a diagnostic test commonly used in patients with vocal fold movement disorder. The aim of this study is to describe LEMG in patients with vocal fold immobility. A total of 55 dysphonic patients with vocal fold immobility diagnosed by laryngeal endoscopy were grouped according to probable clinical cause: 1) unknown; 2) traumatic; or 3) tumoral compression. They were submitted to LEMG by percutaneous insertion of concentric needle electrode. LEMG was conclusive in all patients and showed a majority with peripheral nerve injury. LEMG diagnosed peripheral nerve…

Single fiber electromyography (SFEMG) in mitochondrial diseases (MD).

Conventional EMG, nerve conduction studies and SFEMG were performed in 18 patients with various phenotypes of MD. 14 cases showed findings consistent with mild myopathy, 2 patients signs of sensory-motor axonal neuropathy and 2 cases a mixture of myopathy and axonal neuropathy. Motor unit fiber density was mild increased in 8 out of 13 tested cases. Jitter was abnormal in 10 out of 18 tested patients. Jitter abnormalities were not related to myopathic or neurogenic features in the EMG study, and may be observed in muscles without clinical weakness. The results suggest the existence of neuromus

Practice parameter: laryngeal electromyography (an evidence-based review).

This paper reports on an evidence-based review of laryngeal electromyography (EMG) as a technique for use in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of laryngeal movement disorders, including the laryngeal dystonias, vocal fold paralysis, and other neurolaryngological disorders. The authors performed a systematic review of the medical literature from 1944 through 2001 on the clinical application of EMG to laryngeal disorders. Thirty-three of the 584 articles met the predefined inclusion criteria. The evidence demonstrated that in a double-blind treatment trial of botulinum toxin versus saline,…
