Elephantiasis refers to chronic, severe lymphedema caused by the abnormal accumulation of interstitial fluid due to reduced lymph transport and lymph stasis. This condition is observed secondary to injury, infection, cancer or cancer-related treatment, or congenital abnormalities of the lymphatic system. One of the several forms of elephantiasis is Elephantiasis Nostras Verrucosas (ENV), where "nostras" refers to a non-filarial form of lymphedema that occurs primarily in non-tropical areas. We describe a case of ENV in an Ethiopian man living in Italy, presenting with fever, hypotension, woody…

Lymphedema is a clinical condition resulting from a failure in the drainage of the lymphatic system and the consequent formation of edema and is a chronic progressive condition; its development is an active dynamic process. Physiotherapy techniques are the most widely used method for such cases. However, novel concepts and treatment techniques have emerged in recent years. Godoy & Godoy have developed novel therapy concepts proposing the normalization or near normalization of all clinical stages of lymphedema, including elephantiasis. The Godoy & Godoy method has undergone continual evolution, …

Genital elephantiasis is a disease that is characterized by massive enlargement of the genitalia. Early aetiological diagnosis is of paramount importance so that development of genital elephantiasis can be prevented; otherwise it is not completely reversible with medical therapy and often requires surgical intervention. Chronic mental distress and disability can result as it interferes with daily/routine activities of the affected individual. Over time, the infectious causes of genital elephantiasis have evolved, from syphilis in the pre-penicillin era to donovanosis, lymphogranuloma venereum …

Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa is a rare condition characterised by papules, verrucous lesions, fibrosis and deformity of the affected area. It is caused by chronic lymphedema that could be congenital or produced by a non-associated infection (such as tuberculosis, mycotic infection, syphilis), surgery, radiotherapy, trauma, neoplastic obstruction, obesity, portal hypertension, or congestive heart failure. There is no standard treatment for this rare skin disorder. Depending on the cause and the severity, the treatment can be medical or surgical. We report the case of a man seen in our hospit…

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema typically affects a whole limb. Rarely, lymphedema can present as a circumscribed plaque or an isolated skin tumor. … sis promoting factors (trauma, obesity, infection and/or inflammatory disorders) produces localized elephantiasis.

Two cases of buphthalmos and regional gigantism in peripheral neurofibromatosis (Von Recklinghausen disease) are described. The ocular hypertension was detected at birth and thereafter the facial hemihypertrophy, café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. One case presented a progressive facial elephantiasis without buphthalmos. The evolution in neurofibromatous elephantiasis of these three cases is discussed.

Evidence for an association of endemic non-filarial elephantiasis of the lower legs with areas of red clay soils around volcanoes has been noted in several countries bordering the Rift Valley in East Africa. It was of interest to observe whether the association is also present in an area of endemic prevalence of the disease in West Africa. Such an area occurs in the Cameroon highlands where it has been suggested that onchocerciasis might be an etiological factor. The present study describes the results of a survey in this area. There was no statistical evidence of a relationship with onchocerc…

BACKGROUND: Elephantiasis Nostras Verrucosa (ENV) is a rare clinical condition associated with chronic non-filarial lymphedema caused by bacterial or non-infectious lymphatic obstruction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We reported an unusual case of isolated peno-scrotal ENV of a 67-year-old man with a history of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST) of the stomach. Our patient presented for progressive painless lymphedema of the penis and scrotum since 8 years ago before the diagnosis of GIST tumors, associated with skin changes consistent of superimposed hyperkeratotic papulonodules with a verrucose or…
