Embryological origins and development of the rat diaphragm.

Textbooks of embryology provide a standard set of drawings and text reflecting the traditional interpretation of phrenic nerve and diaphragm development based on anatomical dissections of embryonic tissue. Here, we revisit this issue, taking advantage of immunohistochemical markers for muscle precursors in conjunction with mouse mutants to perform a systematic examination of phrenic-diaphragm embryogenesis. This includes examining the spatiotemporal relationship of phrenic axon outgrowth and muscle precursors during different stages of myogenesis. Additionally, mutant mice lacking c-met recept…

[Hemifacial microsomia. Embryological and clinical approach].

Hemifacial microsomia is an otomandibular dysplasia which includes congenital malformations affecting the jaw and ear apparatus. The knowledge of normal embryonic development is a prerequisite for optimal clinical management of those malformations. The development of craniofacial structures is a multi-step process, which involves many developmental events ranging from the migration of neural crest cells from the neural folds of the young neurula embryo to molecular signaling interactions that coordinate outgrowth and patterning of the facial primordia. Our current knowledge of craniofacial dev

A new embryologic hypothesis of annular pancreas.

Annular pancreas is a developmental anomaly of the pancreas. There are two major hypotheses concerning development of the annular pancreas from the ventral pancreatic anlage; adhesion of the right ventral anlage to the duodenal wall (Lecco's theory), and persistence of the left ventral anlage (Baldwin's theory) reported in 1910, but each theory has some problems and can account for only a few types of annular pancreas. We report a new embryologic hypothesis of annular pancreas which can account for the developmental mechanism of three types of arrangement of annular ducts. The tip of the left

Conjoined twins: theoretical embryologic basis.

A theoretical basis for the embryology of conjoined twins was formulated from clinical experience with ten cases and extensive review of pertinent embryologic and clinical literature, including over 500 cases. Regarding the age old question of fusion or fission, it is concluded that there is no known embryologic process by which conjoined twins can be formed by fission but firm evidence to support fusion in all cases. Whether the fusion occurs between embryos on one embryonic disc or on two is of no consequence since they are all monovular. Intact ectoderm will not fuse to intact ectoderm, and…

[Embryologic problems raised by proboscis lateralis].

Organization is conserved in proboscis lateralis and in this respect it represents a half-nose and not a nasolacrymal canal. It is characterized by mainly skeletal deficiency and a paramedian lateral localization. Associated alterations involved olfactory and ocular structures, often with a disorder of closure of the colobomic slit, but overall neuroblast development is not disturbed. Effects on the subjacent facial regions are variable and remain lateral, the overall situation in relation to Tessier's fissure tending to clarify their significance. Comparison of the malformation with the diffe

Radiogenomics of congenital brain malformations: Linking embryology, genetics, and imaging.

PURPOSE: Congenital brain malformations are structural anomalies present at birth stemming from underlying genetic mutations or prenatal disruptions. The increased use of advanced genomic sequencing has led to major breakthroughs in pediatric neurogenetics; however, progress in unraveling the genetic basis of many central nervous system (CNS) malformations has lagged. This gap is partly due to the complexity of brain development and challenges like establishing the genetic culprit in somatic mosaicism. This review aims to integrate embryology, genetics, and neuroimaging to provide a practical …

A Review of Thyroid Rests: From Embryology to Clinical Management.

Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare developmental anomaly often misidentified as other pathologies like parathyroid adenomas or metastatic lymphadenopathy. This can lead to unnecessary surgical interventions and diagnostic delays. This narrative review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the embryological origins, anatomical distribution, diagnostic challenges, and management strategies of ETT. A comprehensive literature search was conducted by searching PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases, covering publications from January 2015 to January 2025. Fifteen peer-reviewed publicati

Genetics of congenital eye malformations: insights from chick experimental embryology.

Embryological manipulations in chick embryos have been pivotal in our understanding of many aspects of vertebrate eye formation. This research was particularly important in uncovering the role of tissue interactions as drivers of eye morphogenesis and to dissect the function of critical genes. Here, we have highlighted a few of these past experiments to endorse their value in searching for hitherto unknown causes of rare congenital eye anomalies, such as microphthalmia, anophthalmia and coloboma. We have also highlighted a number of similarities between the chicken and human eye, which might b

Embryology of neural tube defects: information provided by associated malformations.

OBJECTIVES: To get information about embryologic mechanisms of neural tube defects (NTD), by studying the associated malformations. METHODS: Eighty three cases of NTD, seen at the prenatal diagnosis unit of Rennes University Hospital (France) between May 1999 and December 2002, were retrospectively studied. Cases with chromosomal anomalies (5/83), cases without available karyotype or pathologic examination were excluded. 24 spina bifida, and 27 cephalic forms (anencephalies, exencephalies, and encephaloceles) were thus analyzed. RESULTS: Only 22/51 cases (43%) were strictly isolated NTD. Ano

Embryology of the upper limb: the molecular orchestration of morphogenesis.

Accumulating data on the molecular interactions that occur during limb development have greatly enhanced our understanding of the process of limb morphogenesis. In this chapter, the key morphologic events are described, the broad categories of molecules involved are defined, the known molecular cascades and specific pathways that orchestrate limb development are reviewed. In addition, cascades disrupted by known genetic mutations associated with limb malformations are identified.

[Testicular and epididymal appendages. Contribution about it's embryology and pathogenesis].

OBJECTIVE: The testicular appendages are structures with biologic activity and with the possibility to become ischaemic or to degenerate before determined stimulus. Laterly, we have seen an apparent increase in our cases of torsion of testicular appendages. The said, together with the questions about embriology and pathogenesis of this structures, encourage us to do this work. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 1- Retrospective clinical study of patients operated of torsion of testicular appendages, from January 1984 to December 2001. We asses age, year of operation and clinical features. 2- Prospective c

[Neurosurgical Embryology. Part 3: Molecular control of corpus callosum development].

The corpus callosum is the most important cerebral commissure allowing axonal fibres to cross the midline. Corpus callosum agenesis is an important condition in man that can reveal numerous genetic syndromes. The corpus callosum develops from the commissural plate, a dorsal region of the telencephalon. Then, axons growing from pyramidal neurons of cortical layer III extend and cross the midline. In experimental models, it is possible to decipher two conditions in which the development of the corpus callosum is impaired. The first condition is characterized by an impairment of the formation of

Embryology, anatomy, and surgical applications of the extrahepatic biliary system.

As technology has improved and the ability to apply this technology in the surgical arena has grown, surgeons have been able to perform more sophisticated operative procedures. Hepatobiliary surgeons are now able to use laparoscopy, immunosuppressive drugs, and technical advances in cryosurgery to accomplish magnificent results. The success and safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, orthotopic liver transplantation, and trisegmentectomy for hepatic tumors depend on a high regard for and an accurate knowledge of the anatomy and some of the common embryologic anomalies of the biliary tree. Theoretical and analytical embryology of conjoined twins: part I: embryogenesis.

A review of over 1,800 publications concerning the embryology and pathologic anatomy of conjoined twins provides convincing evidence that they all result from the secondary union of two originally separate monovular embryonic discs. This "fusion" theory seems to be confirmed by the adjustments to union and the pattern and incidence of specific anomalies at the proposed sites of conjunction in more than 1,200 cases, all of which can be arranged in two uninterrupted series of cases, the one united dorsally (in the neural tube) and the other, ventrally (over a shared a yolk sac). No theoretical "…

Timing and embryology of esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula.

BACKGROUND: The embryology of tracheo-esophageal anomalies is controversial. The development of an adriamycin-treated animal model has enabled improved understanding of the embryogenesis of these anomalies. Using this model, we aimed to describe the events leading to esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula. METHODS: Timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were injected daily with adriamycin intraperitoneally at a dose of 2 mg/Kg on days 6-9 of gestation. Histological sections were prepared from 96 experimental and 34 control rat embryos at 11-14 days gestation (plug day = day 0). RESULT…

Surgical embryology and anatomy of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

A thorough knowledge of parathyroid embryology and anatomy is essential for maximum success in restoration of calcium homeostasis in those patients who have a form of hyperparathyroidism. In fact, an initial meticulous neck dissection by a competent parathyroid surgeon who is well versed in the embryology and anatomy of the neck is the current "hi tech" method of choice for parathyroid gland localization.

Clinical data for radiation embryology. Investigation programme 1967, report 1984.

In 1967 a prospective clinical study was started with the aim of providing optimum counselling for married couples who desire continuation of a pregnancy despite radiation exposure at an early stage as a result of X-ray diagnostics. Recommendations were devised as to whether an interruption of pregnancy should be applied for or not. These results were discussed repeatedly. Within the framework of the prospective study, embryological examinations were made in cases of interruption of pregnancy, and clinical and genetic examinations in cases of children who had been subject to radiation stress i
