'The healthcare system was just trying to deal with me without really dealing with me': exploring individual experiences of methamphetamine-related emergency department visits in Calgary - a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine use has risen dramatically in North America, contributing to increased emergency department (ED) visits marked by agitation and complex psychosocial needs. While clinical consequences of methamphetamine use are well-documented, there is a paucity of research capturing the perspectives of people who use methamphetamines (PWUM) when accessing emergency care. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of PWUM in ED settings to identify service gaps and inform patient-centered care strategies. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was conducted using semi-s

The London Major Trauma Network System: A Literature Review.

Trauma is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and is a major global public health problem. The provision of trauma care has been substandard in England and Wales prior to the implementation of an inclusive major trauma network system in London in 2010 and subsequently across the rest of England two years later. The implementation of the London trauma system has brought about improvements to the delivery of trauma care by decreasing the overall morbidity and mortality significantly. This framework encompasses the collaboration of emergency services, designated Major Trau

Abortion in conflict zones: moral responsibilities of humanitarian agencies in providing safe abortion care.

Unsafe abortion remains a leading cause of maternal mortality globally, disproportionately affecting women in conflict zones where health systems are fractured, legal protections are weakened, and access to reproductive care is severely limited. Armed conflict increases the incidence of unwanted pregnancy through sexual violence, displacement, and disruption of contraceptive services, while also heightening barriers to timely, comprehensive abortion care. Despite growing international recognition of abortion as a life-saving intervention, humanitarian agencies often face legal, cultural, and o

What Is the Address of Your Emergency? Navigating Language Barriers in 911 Calls with Mandarin-Speaking Callers.

INTRODUCTION: Language barriers during emergency calls can delay the delivery of care and jeopardize health outcomes for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). This study examines how Mandarin-speaking LEP callers and 911 Public Safety Telecommunicators (PSTs) navigate the critical task of address acquisition during medical emergencies. METHODS: Using Conversation Analysis, we analyzed nine 911 calls in which callers were later connected to an interpreter only after providing their location. RESULTS: Our study revealed common communication challenges, including delayed responses

[Symptom control and emergency management in geriatric palliative care : Pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches].

Current demographic trends are leading to an increase of older multimorbid chronically ill patients. The resulting complexity of treatment (age-related physiological changes, polypharmacy, cognitive and sensory impairments, reduced ability to communicate) is associated with major challenges for the healthcare and social services systems. Geriatric palliative care represents an important, specialized field of modern medicine. Its focus is on continuous multidisciplinary care to preserve the quality of life. The treatment is holistic, combining pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches.

Comparison and validation of injury risk classifiers for advanced automated crash notification systems.

OBJECTIVE: The odds of death for a seriously injured crash victim are drastically reduced if he or she received care at a trauma center. Advanced automated crash notification (AACN) algorithms are postcrash safety systems that use data measured by the vehicles during the crash to predict the likelihood of occupants being seriously injured. The accuracy of these models are crucial to the success of an AACN. The objective of this study was to compare the predictive performance of competing injury risk models and algorithms: logistic regression, random forest, AdaBoost, naïve Bayes, support vecto

Building Moral Community in an Age of Polarization: A Model for Reconciling Rights of Conscience in Healthcare Organizations.

Responding to conscientious objection and participation declarations to various morally contentious medical services requires a careful, inclusive, and comprehensive approach in reconciling the right of conscience of involved parties. In this paper, we make a case that the traditional discourse of whether or not to accommodate conscience-based requests does not adequately support complex, team-based healthcare systems in addressing emerging areas of moral controversy in medicine, particularly in this era of polarization. We describe how key parties in our organization developed an inclusive an

Assistive technology in the landscape of Medicaid HCBS waivers: national trends and gaps for people with physical disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Medicaid Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) waivers provide services for individuals with disabilities in the United States (U.S.) who are at risk of institutionalization. Assistive technology (AT) is a covered service category that includes devices, systems, and supports such as adapted or mainstream technologies to enhance independence and participation. However, variation in state HCBS waiver policies may facilitate or hinder access to AT devices and related services, resulting in differences in availability, coverage, and implementation. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the

Rural Cardiovascular Health in Missouri: Needs, Care Gaps, and Resources for a More Connected System.

Missouri's rural health needs are inseparable from cardiovascular health. Nearly one-quarter of Missourians live in nonmetro areas, where rural hospitals, clinics, community health centers, emergency medical services agencies, public health departments, and community organizations anchor care. Yet heart disease is the leading cause of death in Missouri; the 20 counties with the highest heart disease death rates are rural; and recent data show higher rural heart disease and stroke mortality than urban Missouri. Cardiovascular risk is shaped by clinical care, primary care access, transportation,

Did Nationwide Mental Health Insurance Reform in Israel Increase Access to Community-Based Care? : A Population-Based Retrospective Cohort Study.

Israel's nationwide mental health reform (July 1, 2015) transferred responsibility and funding for mental healthcare from the Ministry of Health to Israel's four Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), aiming to improve access and availability, integrate mental health into general care, and shift delivery toward community-based models. Using electronic health records and administrative data from all four HMOs and the Ministry of Health, we assessed longitudinal trends in mental health service utilization from 2012 to 2019 among continuously insured Israeli residents with any recorded mental h
