A Systematic Review of Behavioral, Physiological, and Neurobiological Cognitive Regulation Alterations in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by cognitive regulation deficits. However, the current literature has focused on executive functioning and emotional response impairments in this disorder. Herein, we conducted a systematic review of studies assessing the behavioral, physiological, and neurobiological alterations in cognitive regulation in obsessive-compulsive patients using the PubMed database. Most of the studies included explored behavioral (distress, arousal, and frequency of intrusive thoughts) and neurobiological measures (brain activity and functional connectivity) us

Perceived Parental Bonding, Early Maladaptive Schemas and Outcome in Schema Therapy of Cluster C Personality Problems.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to examine the relationships between perceived parental bonding, Early Maladaptive Schemas (Young et al., 2003), and outcome of schema therapy of Cluster C personality problems and whether the perceptions of parental bonding could be influenced by schema therapy. METHOD: The sample consisted of 45 patients with panic disorder and/or agoraphobia and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, Cluster C personality traits who participated in an 11-week inpatient programme consisting of two phases; the first was a 5-week panic

Internet-Delivered Affect Phobia Therapy for Neuroticism: Results from an Uncontrolled Pilot Study with 6-Month Follow-Up.

Objective: Trait neuroticism both correlates with and predicts mental and physical health outcomes and has been characterized as a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health problems. No previous studies have investigated if internet-delivered psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) can reduce levels of neuroticism. The aim of the present study was to investigate the preliminary effect of affect-focused IPDT on trait neuroticism in a sample with mixed anxiety and depressive symptoms. Methods: In total, 30 participants were included and assigned to 10 weeks of therapist-supported IPDT. Self-reported le

Adherence of human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients to antiretroviral therapy.

The impact of demographic, psychosocial, and medical regimen-related variables on adherence of 123 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients to antiretroviral therapy was assessed by means of refill methodology. Satisfaction with social support (P = .029), problem-focused coping (P = .027), and active-behavioral coping (P = .011) correlated significantly with adherence, whereas loss of motivation (P = .006), hopelessness (P = .16), and avoidant coping (p = .015) correlated with nonadherence. At the 6-month follow-up, the mean CD4 cell count differed significantly among adherent vers

Metacognitive interpersonal therapy for male domestic offenders (MIT-MDO) with personality disorders: A proof-of-concept case series.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious health worldwide issue, and current treatment options are far from satisfactory. In this case series, we focused on male domestic offenders (MDO) as they are the most frequently responsible for IPV and targeted individuals displaying personality disorders (PDs) features and emotion dysregulation who were willing to accept court-mandated treatment. The underlying idea was that addressing PD factors through a specific treatment would help form and sustain a working alliance, understand the psychological triggers of violent behavio

Changes in facial electromyographic activity in spider-phobic girls after psychotherapy.

Recent studies of spider phobia have indicated that disgust is a crucial disorder-relevant emotion and that the facial electromyogram (EMG) of the levator labii region is a reliable disgust indicator. The present investigation focused on EMG effects of psychotherapy in thirty girls (aged between 8 and 14 years) suffering from spider phobia. They were presented with phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures in a first EMG session. Subsequently, patients were randomly assigned to either a therapy group or a waiting-list group. Therapy-group parti

In-session emotional expression predicts symptomatic and panic-specific reflective functioning improvements in panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy.

In panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), exploration and interpretation of avoided and conflicted emotions and fantasies surrounding anxiety are thought to promote panic-specific reflective functioning (PSRF), which drives panic disorder improvements. Patient emotional expression within a session may be a marker of engaged processing and experiencing of affectively charged material. Degree of in-session expressed emotion, indicating both verbal and nonverbal emotions, was examined across three early therapy sessions for prediction of subsequent outcomes. We further investigated whe

The development and application of compassion-focused therapy for eating disorders (CFT-E).

OBJECTIVES: This article outlines specific developments in compassion-focused therapy (CFT) for the treatment of patients with an eating disorder. METHODS: The article provides a narrative review based on the existing literature and current practices of CFT for eating disorders (CFT-E). RESULTS: The role of shame, self-criticism, self-directed hostility, and difficulties in generating and experiencing affiliative emotion in patients with an eating disorder is highlighted. The article describes how CFT-E uniquely addresses these issues and discusses the current evidence base for CFT-E. It als

Comparing the effectiveness of emotion regulation therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on treatment adherence in hemodialysis patients: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Non-adherence is a common challenge among patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of Emotion Regulation Therapy (ERT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on improving treatment adherence in hemodialysis patients, with a control group receiving standard care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety hemodialysis patients were equally randomized into ERT, CBT, and control groups (N = 30 each group), with six attrition cases per group. Baseline demographics (age, BMI, dialysis duration, education) showed no significant intergroup differ

Protocol for a feasibility study, without control group, of a combined treatment for PTSD and difficulties in emotion regulation for patients with substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: There are high rates of co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among patients in treatment for substance use disorder (SUD). PTSD and SUD should be treated simultaneously, which is rarely the case. The reluctance to offer trauma-focused treatment is partially due to fear of increased risk of dropout. PTSD is related to emotion dysregulation and elevated psychological burden, higher dropout rates and increased risk of relapse. In this project, we plan to assess if it is relevant, feasible, acceptable and safe to add a combination of narrative exposure therapy (NET) and d

Mental Healthcare through Cognitive Emotional Regulation Strategies among Prisoners.

Prisoners are exposed to a deprived environment, which triggers mental illness and psychological problems. Abundant research has reported that mental illness problems, suicide, aggression, and violent behaviors occur in incarcerated people. Although the mental healthcare system for incarcerated people is emphasized, little research has been conducted due to their limited environment. In particular, the regulation of negative emotion is significantly associated with mental illness and anti-social and violent behaviors. However, mental healthcare through cognitive emotional regulation based on c

Study development and protocol for a cohort study examining the impact of baseline social cognition on response to treatment for people living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

UNLABELLED: Background: Social cognitive impairments, specifically in facial emotion processing and mental state attribution, are common in post-traumatic stress disorder. However few studies so far have examined whether social cognitive ability impacts on PTSD recovery. Objective: To examine whether baseline social cognitive abilities are associated with treatment outcomes following trauma-focused therapy for PTSD. Method: This is a cohort study that will relate treatment outcomes post-discharge to baseline measures of social cognition (five tasks: Emotion Odd-One-Out Task (Oddity), Reading t

Enhancing Emotional Intelligence in Autism Spectrum Disorder Through Intervention: A Systematic Review.

Limitations in some emotional characteristics that are conceptualized in the definition of emotional intelligence can be seen among people with autism spectrum disorder. The main objective of this study is the analysis of the effectiveness of interventions directed to enhance emotional recognition and emotional regulation among this specific population. A systematic review was carried out in databases such as Psycinfo, WoS, SCOPUS, and PubMed, identifying a total of 572 articles, of which 29 met the inclusion criteria. The total sample included 1061 participants, mainly children aged between 4

A Comparison of an Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Group Therapy to a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Group Program for People with Personality Vulnerabilities: A Randomized Pilot Study for Feasibility.

Introduction: Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) focuses on emotional processing and the resolution of internal conflicts. This randomized pilot and feasibility study evaluated the implementation of a novel 12-week group program based on ISTDP model, and compared clinical outcomes in reducing symptoms associated with personality vulnerabilities (e.g., emotion regulation, self-harm). The setting of the study was an Australian Public Hospital Service. Methods: Participants were referred to a brief intervention service for personality disorders and were randomly assigned to either

Mental imagery as an emotional amplifier: application to bipolar disorder.

Cognitions in the form of mental images have a more powerful impact on emotion than their verbal counterparts. This review synthesizes the cognitive science of imagery and emotion with transdiagnostic clinical research, yielding novel predictions for the basis of emotional volatility in bipolar disorder. Anxiety is extremely common in patients with bipolar disorder and is associated with increased dysfunction and suicidality, yet it is poorly understood and rarely treated. Mental imagery is a neglected aspect of bipolar anxiety although in anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorde

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Two Treatments for Vulnerable and Grandiose Narcissism: Unified Protocol vs. Schema-Focused Therapy.

In this study, we compared the efficacy of schema-focused therapy (SFT) versus the unified protocol (UP) in reducing symptom severity of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) and its common features. We also compared their ability to reduce grandiose and vulnerable symptoms of NPD. One hundred and fourteen individuals were randomly assigned to these groups. Severity of NPD was significantly reduced to an equivalent degree in both treatment groups across a 12-month follow-up period. SFT group showed significantly greater reduction in measures of narcissistic grandiosity, while UP group showed

Some Observations on Paleologic Thinking in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Paleologic thinking, a prelogical mode of reasoning described by Silvano Arieti, is characterized by emotion-driven, retrospective reasoning and has been observed in severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. The author explores its relevance to borderline personality disorder, an area that has been historically understudied. Patients with borderline personality disorder often regress into paleologic modes of thought during interpersonal distress, resulting in illogical conclusions driven by feelings rather than evidence. It is argued that this process underlies symptoms of paranoia, mispe

Treatment outcomes of Veteran men in a comprehensive dialectical behavior therapy program: Characterizing sex differences in symptom trajectories.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is one of the primary psychosocial treatments for reducing suicidal behaviors and improving psychosocial outcomes among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and has been shown to reduce BPD symptoms when delivered in a Veteran Affairs medical center setting. Despite evidence of similar rates of BPD in both men and women, the vast majority of treatment outcome research in BPD has focused on women. We sought to characterize sex differences in symptom trajectories among Veterans participating in a comprehensive DBT program. We found that Veteran m

The Role of the Family in the Course and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a highly recurrent and debilitating illness. Research has implicated the role of psychosocial stressors, including high expressed-emotion (EE) attitudes among family members, in the relapse-remission course of the disorder. This article explores the developmental pathways by which EE attitudes originate and predict relapses of bipolar disorder. Levels of EE are correlated with the illness attributions of caregivers and bidirectional patterns of interaction between caregivers and patients during the postepisode period. Although the primary treatments for bipolar disorder are

'Don't say "fis" say "fish" ', 'I said "fis"': Ethical Considerations in Therapy to Change Child Speech.

BACKGROUND: Historically, assessment of child speech has focused on transcription and analysis of speech sound production with no exploration of the child's own perception of his or her speech. This article explores the possibility that whilst children with speech 'difficulties' may be aware that 'talking to people' is problematic, they may not be aware that the reason for their communication difficulty is that their speech is unclear. Similarly, in a therapy context, the child's own appreciation of the purpose and progress of therapy has not been explored. Given the current concern for child
