Self-Conscious Emotions and Social Isolation Among Young Adult Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Young adults with cancer (YACs) experience psychological and psychosocial challenges related to cancer. In this qualitative study, we identified self-conscious emotions of guilt, shame and pride associated with psychosocial challenges in a sample of recent cancer survivors. We aim to inform the adaptation of psychotherapy interventions to support psychological adjustment to cancer through the regulation of self-conscious emotions. METHODS: We recruited 35 YACs (English-speaking, age 18-39, completed treatment 2-5 years prior) through YA cancer advocacy organizations. Participants c…

Mixed emotions evoked when incongruent outward appearance and motion are combined.

Understanding mixed emotions is crucial for capturing the ambivalence of human information processing. However, how specific visual factors, such as outward appearance and motion, interact to evoke these conflicting feelings remains unclear. Here, we present three-dimensional (3D) characters as visual stimuli that evoke mixed feelings, providing empirical insights into emotional phenomena such as "kimo-kawaii" by focusing on their outward appearances and motions. Congruent stimuli (e.g., pleasant appearance with pleasant motion) and incongruent stimuli (e.g., pleasant appearance with unpleasan…

Adaptive and maladaptive emotions in patients with cancer: A network perspective.

BACKGROUND: Receiving a cancer diagnosis frequently evokes a wide range of emotions. Emotions may help to cope with cancer: these are adaptive emotions. When emotions become disproportionate to the situation or interfere with functioning, emotions are maladaptive. According to the network theory of mental disorders, symptoms are reciprocally associated with each other; if there are strong connections between symptoms, the symptom network remains activated. A strongly connected network indicates maladaptive emotions. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether patients with cancer with maladaptive emotions …

Dark Triad Traits Affect the Perception of Emotions in Animal Calls.

Humans can recognize emotions from vocalisations of various animal species. Our study examined whether human psychological differences in dark personality traits (as measured by SD3) and musician experience affect the decoding of emotions in animal calls. Respondents assessed the situation and the valence and intensity of emotion experienced by the animal in calls of piglets recorded in three social and one painful situation. With increasing psychopathy scores, individuals made more misclassification errors between social and painful calls and also perceived the social calls as more negative. …

Predicting academic success: The roles of emotions, stress and prior grades.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Emotional regulation, anxiety, perceived academic stress and prior grades each predict academic success, but exist … a more integrated test: control-value theory holds that appraisals of control generate achievement emotions, including anxiety, that shape performance, while social cognitive theory treats prior grades as a mastery experience calibrating self-efficacy and emotional vulnerability. Together, the frameworks predict that anxiety and perceived academic stress …

Vocal encoding of heritable sociability prevails over emotions in sheep bleats.

Vocalizations of animals are good indicators of their emotions. Temperament is known to influence the regulation and expression of emotions. However, how animal temperament affects their vocalizations and particularly their vocal expressions of emotions remains largely unexplored. Sociability is often measured as the behavioural reactivity to social separation and is a temperament trait intrinsically linked to emotional reactivity. Most social species respond to such challenging situations using contact calls. Here, we investigated whether the acoustic structure of these calls reflects sociabi…

Alexithymia moderates brain function during suppression of negative emotions in fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is associated with altered brain function and emotion regulation difficulties. Alexithymia is common in fibromyalgia and may further affect emotion regulation in this population. This study examined the interplay of alexithymia and fibromyalgia on brain function during suppression of negative emotions. Twenty-seven female participants with fibromyalgia and 30 controls performed an emotion regulation task while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. Alexithymia was assessed using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). A series of whole-brain multiple linear regressions was…

FER20E: An Extended Facial Expression Recognition Dataset With 20 Discrete Emotions.

Facial emotion recognition (FER) has traditionally focused on a limited set of basic expressions, often failing to capture the complexity, subtlety, and cultural variability of real-world human emotions. To address these limitations, this paper introduces FER20E, a large-scale facial expression dataset comprising 20 emotion categories, including both basic and fine-grained affective states. The proposed emotion taxonomy is systematically derived by integrating facial action coding system (FACS)-based action units (AUs) with the valence-arousal circumplex model, ensuring both interpretability a…

Psychometric Properties of the Persian Version of the Mentalizing Emotions Questionnaire.

Objective: The Mentalizing Emotions Questionnaire (MEQ) assesses individuals' capacity to perceive, understand, and communicate emotional states across three dimensions: Self, Communicating, and Other. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the MEQ. Method : Two independent samples of Iranian adults participated in this research (total N = 785; 71% female). Study 1 (N = 307) conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to examine the underlying structure of the scale. Study 2 (N = 478) performed a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the thre…

Exploring the Contributions of Various Acoustic Features in Cantonese Vocal Emotions.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the acoustic patterns of six emotions and a neutral state in Cantonese speech by focusing on the prosodic modulations that convey emotional content in this tonal language, which has six lexical tones. METHOD: We employed the extended Geneva minimalistic acoustic parameter set to systematically analyze the acoustic features of 3,474 recordings from the Cantonese Audio-Visual Emotional Speech Database. Linear mixed-effects models were fitted to examine variations in acoustic parameters across emotional states. Decision tree models were used to a…

Distinct patterns of monocular advantage for facial emotions in social anxiety.

Individuals with social anxiety often exhibit atypical processing of facial expressions. Previous research in social anxiety has primarily emphasized cognitive bias associated with face processing and the corresponding abnormalities in cortico-limbic circuitry, yet whether social anxiety influences early perceptual processing of emotional faces remains largely unknown. We used a psychophysical method to investigate the monocular advantage for face perception (i.e., face stimuli are better recognized when presented to the same eye compared to different eyes), an effect that is indicative of ear

Sleep disturbance has the largest impact on children's behavior and emotions.

OBJECTIVE: Children's behavior and emotions are affected by sleep disturbances, the parent-child relationship, media viewing time, and the social status of parents and caregivers. We conducted a questionnaire survey to identify the factors that have the greatest impact on children's behavior and emotions and how these factors relate to each other. METHODS: A parental questionnaire survey was performed at a public elementary school. The questionnaire comprised questions on the family environment (e.g., family structure, media and game exposure, after-school lessons, and caregiver's work schedu…

Are emotions contagious? A conceptual review of studies in language education.

Considering the great role those affective variables play in language learning, it seems wise to hypothesize whether teacher and learner emotions are contagious in the language classroom or not. The existing literature on emotion contagion in other fields of study accepts this hypothesis and reveals significant points about the verbal and non-verbal cues for emotion contagion in class. The present paper introduces and defines the topic and goes on with summarizing the procedure of transmitting the emotion. Then, it reviews the existing research on emotion contagion in different areas and creat…
