Evaluating nocturnal polyuria in Japanese children with nocturnal enuresis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess whether enuretic Japanese patients with nocturnal polyuria (NP) who met Hoashi's criteria (6-9 years: ≥200 mL; 10 years and older: ≥250 mL) met the International Children's Continence Society (ICCS; expected bladder capacity × 130%) and Rittig's criteria for nocturnal polyuria (>[age+9] × 20 mL). We also compared the effectiveness of 1-desamino-8-d-arginine vasopressin (DDAVP) with the three criteria. METHODS: Fifty-four patients who had NP with normal bladder capacity were enrolled: 36 boys (67%); median age, 8 (interquartile range: 7-9). W

Innocent heart murmurs and enuresis: Examining a possible link.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of innocent heart murmurs in children affected by nocturnal enuresis (NE). RESULTS: The prevalence of innocent heart murmurs in G2 was 6.34%. This condition was significantly more frequent in children who suffered from NE. Indeed, in G1, the prevalence of innocent heart murmurs was 21.45%, although there were few differences between the children with monosymptomatic NE and non-monosymptomatic NE; moreover, this prevalence was higher in males. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled a total of 401 children (G1), 300 males and 101 femal

Sleep disturbances associated with sleep enuresis: A questionnaire study.

PURPOSE: Sleep enuresis (SE) is the second most common sleep complaint in childhood. It has been associated with bladder hyperactivity, excessive urine production and deeper sleep. Several sleep disorders have been described in association with SE like parasomnias and sleep apnea. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of sleep disturbances in children with SE through the use of Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) compared to normal children matched for age and sex. METHODS: A questionnaire evaluation was performed in 76 enuretic and 112 normal children through the Sleep Di

Neuropsychological functioning related to specific characteristics of nocturnal enuresis.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: There is a high comorbidity demonstrated in the literature between nocturnal enuresis and several neuropsychological dysfunctions, with special emphasis on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the majority of the psychological studies did not include full non-invasive screening and failed to differentiate between monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) and non-MNE patients. OBJECTIVE: The present study primarily aimed to investigate the association between nocturnal enuresis and (neuro)psychological functioning in a selective homogeneous patient

The relationship between lifelong premature ejaculation and monosymptomatic enuresis.

INTRODUCTION: Although both biological and psychological factors are important in the etiologies, the underlying physiopathologies of lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) and monosymptomatic enuresis (ME) are not completely understood. AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of ME in men diagnosed with lifelong PE and relationships of these two conditions. METHODS: Between December 2008 and November 2009, we designed a prospective randomized study in 51 patients who had presented with lifelong PE and in age-matched 106 healthy control cases without PE. If the patient declared

Exploring the differences between mono- and polysymptomatic nocturnal enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: Recently the heterogeneity of nocturnal enuresis has been manifest in the distinction between mono- and polysymptomatic forms, based on the absence or presence of bladder overactivity, respectively. Although this classification has important clinical implications, there is a lack of empirical work relating to associated symptom expression and psychological functioning. The aim of this study was to identify variables associated with the two forms of nocturnal enuresis by means of a large population survey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a cohort of 11,021 parents surveyed as part of the

Epidemiology of enuresis among school-age children in Thailand.

Enuresis is a very common developmental problem in young children. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of enuresis in school-age children, to determine the factors associated with nocturnal enuresis, and to evaluate the parental strategies for managing enuresis. A randomly selected cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in eight elementary schools in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 3453 parents of children aged 5 through 15 years completed the questionnaires. The overall response rate to the questionnaire was 70%. The prevalence of enuresis was 4.2% and that of n

Enuresis subtypes based on nocturnal hypercalciuria: a multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Desmopressin may not be effective for nocturnal enuresis associated with polyuria and hypercalciuria. Nighttime hypercalciuria in an enuretic population from 5 centers and its correlation with nighttime polyuria were verified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 450 enuretic patients (278 males, 172 females, mean age 9.7 years) were evaluated with 72-hour micturition charts, urinalysis, serum creatinine and osmolarity, diurnal and nocturnal electrolytes with fractional Na+ and K+ urinary excretion, and nocturnal (4 a.m.) plasma vasopressin. Creatinine electrolytes and osmolarity were m

Sleep disordered breathing and nocturnal polyuria: nocturia and enuresis.

Although nocturnal voiding is frequently attributed to urologic disorders, nocturia and enuresis are also important symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing. However, polyuria can be elicited by obstructive sleep apnea as well as bedrest, microgravity and other experimental conditions where the blood volume is shifted centrally to the upper body. The nocturnal polyuria of sleep apnea is an evoked response to conditions of negative intrathoracic pressure due to inspiratory effort posed against a closed airway. The mechanism for this natriuretic response is the release of atrial natriuretic peptid

Sleep disorders: insomnia, sleepwalking, night terrors, nightmares, and enuresis.

All five sleep disorders reviewed in this article can be adequately evaluated in the physician's office by taking a sleep history and conducting a careful general medical and psychiatric assessment. Insomnia, the commonest sleep disorder, is more prevalent among women and elderly and psychosocially disadvantaged persons. Personality factors such as a tendency toward the internalization of emotions and the occurrence of stressful life events also play a major role in the development of chronic insomnia. A multidimensional approach is indicated for the treatment of chronic insomnia; hypnotic dru

Intra-individual variability in voiding diaries of children with enuresis.

BACKGROUND: Children with enuresis are often requested to complete voiding diaries in the diagnostic process. There is no consensus on the optimal number of days of registration in the voiding diary that would allow correct patient characterization. OBJECTIVES: To examine the intra-individual variation in the parameters yielded from voiding diaries and evaluate if one week of registration is sufficient when evaluating the nocturnal urine production (NUP) and maximum voided volume (MVV) in children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE). METHODS: We analyzed 228 voiding diaries complet

Relationship between nocturnal enuresis and sleep in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a multifactorial and complex condition. One less understood factor in its pathophysiology is the enuretic inability to wake up when the bladder is full (impaired arousal). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep and NE in children and adolescents. METHODS: A systematic review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines, and the electronic databases MEDLINE (via PubMed) and SCOPUS were searched until March 2022. Eligibility criteria were studies that recruited patients aged five-17 years with a diagnosis of NE according to the

Isolated coronal urethral duplication in an adolescent presenting with enuresis.

This report describes an isolated urethral duplication in the coronal plane in a child referred with primary 'enuresis'. This presentation is unique because duplications usually occur in the sagittal plane. In patients with suspected urethral duplication, magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with catheterisation of the distal duplicate opening accurately delineates the abnormality, so that individualised treatment strategies can be considered.

Pediatric Pharmacology of Desmopressin in Children with Enuresis: A Comprehensive Review.

Desmopressin is a synthetic analogue of the natural antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin. Over the years, it has been clinically used to manage nocturnal polyuria in children with enuresis. Various pharmaceutical formulations of desmopressin have been commercialized for this indication-nasal spray, nasal drops, oral tablet and oral lyophilizate. Despite the fact that desmopressin is a frequently prescribed drug in children, its use and posology is based on limited pediatric data. This review provides an overview of the current pediatric pharmacological data related to the different desmop
