Overview on Chikungunya Virus Infection: From Epidemiology to State-of-the-Art Experimental Models.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is currently one of the most relevant arboviruses to public health. It is a member of the Togaviridae family and alphavirus genus and causes an arthritogenic disease known as chikungunya fever (CHIKF). It is characterized by a multifaceted disease, which is distinguished from other arbovirus infections by the intense and debilitating arthralgia that can last for months or years in some individuals. Despite the great social and economic burden caused by CHIKV infection, there is no vaccine or specific antiviral drugs currently available. Recent outbreaks have shown a c

Cholera deaths in Soho, London, 1854: Risk Terrain Modeling for epidemiological investigations.

Risk Terrain Modeling (RTM) is a spatial analysis technique used to diagnose environmental conditions that lead to hazardous outcomes. Originally developed for applications to violent crime analysis, RTM is utilized here to analyze Dr. John Snow's data from the 1854 cholera outbreak in London to demonstrate its potential value to contemporary epidemiological investigations. Dr. Snow saved countless lives when he traced the source of the cholera outbreak to a specific water pump through inductive reasoning, which he communicated through maps and spatial evidence. His methods have since inspired

Modelling the epidemiology of Escherichia coli ST131 and the impact of interventions on the community and healthcare centres.

ST131 Escherichia coli is an emergent clonal group that has achieved successful worldwide spread through a combination of virulence and antimicrobial resistance. Our aim was to develop a mathematical model, based on current knowledge of the epidemiology of ESBL-producing and non-ESBL-producing ST131 E. coli, to provide a framework enabling a better understanding of its spread within the community, in hospitals and long-term care facilities, and the potential impact of specific interventions on the rates of infection. A model belonging to the SEIS (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Susceptible) clas

Rift Valley fever epidemiology, surveillance, and control: what have models contributed?

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging vector-borne zoonotic disease that represents a threat to human health, animal health, and livestock production, particularly in Africa. The epidemiology of RVF is not well understood, so that forecasting RVF outbreaks and carrying out efficient and timely control measures remains a challenge. Various epidemiological modeling tools have been used to increase knowledge on RVF epidemiology and to inform disease management policies. AIM: This narrative review gives an overview of modeling tools used to date to measure or model RVF risk in animal

Modelling the black death. A historical case study and implications for the epidemiology of bubonic plague.

We analysed a plague outbreak in the mining town of Freiberg in Saxony which started in May 1613 and ended in February 1614. This epidemic was selected for study because of the high quality of contemporary sources. It was possible to identify 1400 individual victims meaning that more than 10% of the population of the city perished. The outbreak was modelled by 9 differential equations describing flea, rat, and human populations. This resulted in a close fit to the historical records of this outbreak. An interesting implication of the model is that the introduction of even a small number of imm

Bayesian hierarchical modelling to enhance the epidemiological value of abattoir surveys for bovine fasciolosis.

Four classes of Bayesian hierarchical models were evaluated using an historical dataset from an abattoir survey for fasciolosis conducted in Victoria, Australia. The purpose of this analysis was to identify areas of high prevalence and to explain these in terms of environmental covariates. The simplest of the Bayesian models, with a single random effect, validated the use of smoothed maps for cartographic display when the sample sizes vary. The model was then extended to partition the random effect into spatially structured and unstructured components, thus allowing for spatial autocorrelation

Viral zoonosis from the viewpoint of their epidemiological surveillance: tick-borne encephalitis as a model.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a vector borne and, more rarely, a food (milk, milk products) borne disease of humans. For further characterization of the virus activity in natural foci of TBE more than 32,000 unengorged wild ticks were caught in low and high virus active foci in Germany (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Brandenburg, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Saarland). The ticks were examined by RT-PCR and Southern blot hybridization as well as by classical virological methods. The dynamics of such natural foci of TBE in the last 35 years were discussed. Also nucleotide se

A Systematic Review of Spatial Epidemiological Modeling Approaches Applied During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: A wide range of epidemiological modeling approaches have been applied to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which presents an opportunity to assess common approaches applied to specific research questions. Spatial models interrogate how heterogeneities and host movement dynamics influence local and regional patterns of disease, issues that were of great interest for understanding and controlling SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: Here we present a systematic review of spatial epidemiological modeling approaches of SARS-CoV-2. We describe common themes and highlight unique strategies, providing a founda

Case for a one-health approach to venomous snakebite, using the epidemiological triad model, for mitigation.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming (SBE) was listed as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), by the WHO in 2017. SBE kills more victims than all the other NTDs put together. SBE is a condition associated with poverty, inequity, inaccessibility and poor health systems. The major burden of SBE is borne by the countries of South-Asia, led by India, with an estimated 58,000 deaths annually. This as compared with the USA or Australia where deaths due to SBE is in a single digit, despite having equally venomous species. SBE is also a significant cause for loss of livestock in the Tropics. Epidemiological and health economic implications of symptom propagation in respiratory pathogens: A mathematical modelling investigation.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory pathogens inflict a substantial burden on public health and the economy. Although the severity of symptoms caused by these pathogens can vary from asymptomatic to fatal, the factors that determine symptom severity are not fully understood. Correlations in symptoms between infector-infectee pairs, for which evidence is accumulating, can generate large-scale clusters of severe infections that could be devastating to those most at risk, whilst also conceivably leading to chains of mild or asymptomatic infections that generate widespread immunity with minimal cost to public

Development of a Breast Cancer Risk Prediction Model Integrating Monogenic, Polygenic, and Epidemiologic Risk.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer has been associated with monogenic, polygenic, and epidemiologic (clinical, reproductive, and lifestyle) risk factors, but studies evaluating the combined effects of these factors have been limited. METHODS: We extended previous work in breast cancer risk modeling, incorporating pathogenic variants (PV) in six breast cancer predisposition genes and a 105-SNP polygenic risk score (PRS), to include an epidemiologic risk score (ERS) in a sample of non-Hispanic White women drawn from prospective cohorts and population-based case-control studies, with 23,518 cases and 22,

Spatiotemporal models of dengue epidemiology in the Philippines: Integrating remote sensing and interpretable machine learning.

Previous dengue epidemiological analyses have been limited in spatiotemporal extent or covariate dimensions, the latter neglecting the multifactorial nature of dengue. These constraints, caused by rigid and traditional statistical tools which collapse amidst 'Big Data', prompt interpretable machine-learning (iML) approaches. Predicting dengue incidence and mortality in the Philippines, a data-limited yet high-burden country, the mlr3 universe of R packages was used to build and optimize ML models based on remotely sensed provincial and dekadal 3 NDVI and 9 rainfall features from 2016 to 2020.

An epidemiological modeling investigation of the long-term changing dynamics of the plague epidemics in Hong Kong.

Identifying epidemic-driving factors through epidemiological modeling is a crucial public health strategy that has substantial policy implications for control and prevention initiatives. In this study, we employ dynamic modeling to investigate the transmission dynamics of pneumonic plague epidemics in Hong Kong from 1902 to 1904. Through the integration of human, flea, and rodent populations, we analyze the long-term changing trends and identify the epidemic-driving factors that influence pneumonic plague outbreaks. We examine the dynamics of the model and derive epidemic metrics, such as repr
