Children suffering from schizophrenic psychosis were treated with chlorpromazine for 21 days. Changes in erythrocyte shape were studied by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the percentage of stomatocytes in sick children was significantly greater than in healthy children. There was no such a difference in case of echinocytes.

In summary, this case illustrates a previously unrecognized syndrome of reticulocytosis secondary to a defect in reticulin degradation. We are aware of two other case reports in the literature which also describe patients with an elevated reticulocyte count who's red cells appeared to lack the ability to degrade reticulin (Lofters et. al.1978, Tulliez et. al. 1982). Both of these cases however, demonstrated only mild reticulocytosis and appeared to be related to preleukemic syndromes. We reported previously that painful crises in patients with sickle cell anemia are accompanied by striking decreases in the percent of densest red cells (fraction 4) when studied with isopyknic Percoll-Stractan gradients. We report that an alternative to density gradients is the red cell distribution width (RDW), an estimate of red cell size variation measured with a Coulter counter. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the deactivating effects of circulating blood cells on the lytic activity of detergent sclerosants.
METHODS: Samples of whole blood (WB), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and isolated leukocytes were incubated with various concentrations of sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS) or polidocanol (POL) and added to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), which were then counted using a fluorescent plate reader. Full blood counting was performed using a hematology analyzer. Platelet lysis and microparticle formation was assessed using lactadherin binding in flow cytometry.

OBJECTIVES: The syndrome of X-linked sideroblastic anaemia with ataxia is rare, described only twice in the literature. The aim was to obtain clinical neurological and haematological data about this rare syndrome throughout adult life.
METHODS: A family is described with two affected brothers and two affected maternal uncles. The family was evaluated clinically. Haematological investigations included full blood count, blood film, iron studies, free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) concentrations and a bone marrow examination where possible.

Study evaluated splenic function in childhood cancer survivors (CCS) who had received radiation to the spleen utilizing pRBC PIT (vesiculated erythrocytes) count compared to a non-radiated control group. Those exposed to < 20 Gy of radiation had PIT counts not significantly different from the control group. There was trend for higher pRBC PIT count in those exposed to higher doses of radiation.
