INTRODUCTION: Although cholesterol granuloma associated with chronic middle ear disease is shown to be common in the mastoid antrum and air cells of the temporal bone (Leon et al., Arch Pathol Lab Med 126:217-219, 2002), its presence in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses is rarely encountered. There are few cases reported regarding the incidence of cholesterol granuloma in these sinuses (Ko et al., Am J Otoryngol 27:370-372, 2006).
CASE: Here, we report a case of concomitant cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses of a 33-year-old man who underwent surgical excision.

A case of a 63-year-old woman with subfrontal schwannoma of the left side is presented. The patient had a two-month history of recent memory disturbance and unstable gait. Computed tomography represented an isodense mass lesion with large and small cystic components in the anterior cranial fossa, enhancing homogeneously after intravenous injection of contrast medium. Cerebral angiograms revealed a noticeable hypovascularity. She underwent total resection of the tumor on May 21, 1986. It was verified that the tumor was attached to the left olfactory groove and had invaded the ethmoid bone. It w…

Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery is increasingly prevalent, with its scope expanding from pathogens in the midline region to those in the paramedian region. Maximizing anterior sphenoidectomy is important for the median approach, and lateralizing the pterygopalatine fossa is crucial for the paramedian approach. Maximizing the surgical corridor in the nasal cavity and minimizing damage to neurovascular structures are vital for establishing a surgical field with minimal bleeding, ensuring safe, precise, and gentle procedures. However, the relationship between the maxillofacial and skull b

According to the literature, the development of the frontal sinus is a result of the active immigration of cells from the ethmoidal complex into the os frontale. This migration theory is in contrast to the results in patients with Apert's syndrome. When front-orbital advancement at the age of a few months is performed in these patients--at a time when the frontal suture is not yet closed--a sinus developed despite the distance between nasal root and os frontale, being up to 2 cm. In order to investigate the development of the frontal sinus, an animal study in 12 juvenile Goettingen minipigs (a

The craniofacial complex of two neonatal, human, cyclopic specimens was studied in detail. Both specimens exhibited a single ocular opening and one had a prominent probosics positioned in the midline directly superior to the ocular aperture. No external nasal development was noted in the other specimen. The most remarkable finding was the lack of development of all skeletal derivatives of the ethmoidal cartilage(cribriform plate, perpendicular plate, superior and middle nasal conchae, medial orbital walls, and nasal septal cartilage) in both specimens. Since these bones normally form the media

Anterior skull base defects with encephalocele in adults are quite rare and can be a cause of spontaneous rhinoliquorrhea; however, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula can be not rarely misdiagnosed for several months or years. Five adult patients affected by ethmoidal encephalocele with CSF fistula were treated in our institute from 2006 through to 2011. Onset of clinical history was represented by rhinoliquorrhea, which was precociously recognized in only 1 patient; in the other 4, it was misdiagnosed for a period ranging from 11 months to 5 years. After clinical diagnosis of CSF fistula and a

OBJECTIVES: Fibrous dysplasia of bone is a rare sporadic benign congenital condition in which normal cancellous bone is replaced by fibro-osseous tissue with immature osteogenesis. Sarcomatous transformation is exceptional. Lesions may involve one bone (monostotic) or several (polyostotic). Fibrous dysplasia may be associated with café-au-lait skin macules and endocrinopathy in McCune-Albright syndrome, or with myxoma in Mazabraud's syndrome.
METHODS: We report ten cases of patients followed up for craniofacial fibrous dysplasia in our center between 2010 and 2015.
RESULTS: Mean age was 43 y

Paranasal sinuses of living apes and humans grow with positive allometry, suggesting a novel mechanism for bone enlargement. Here, we examine the paranasal sinuses of the owl monkey (Aotus spp.) and a tamarin (Saguinus midas) across postnatal development. The prediction that paranasal sinuses grow disproportionately faster than the main nasal chamber is tested. We used diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography and histology to study sinuses in eight Aotus and three tamarins ranging from newborn to adult ages. Sinuses were segmented at the mucosa-air cavity interface and mea

A number of craniofacial and systemic malformations have been described in association with choanal atresia. We report a case of bilateral choanal atresia associated with congenital absence of the cribriform plate, crista galli, and perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone. The anterior skull base defect was detected by using high-resolution computed tomography with three-dimensional reconstructions. The findings support the mesodermal flow theory of choanal atresia, in which there is excess migration of neural crest cells into the developing nasal septum and posterior choanae. This occurs at t…

This study was performed to compare the orbital and peri-orbital morphological variations in Apert syndrome patients with different cranial vault suture synostosis, so as to provide an anatomic basis for individualized surgical planning. Computed tomography scans of 57 unoperated Apert syndrome patients and 59 controls were subgrouped as follows: type I, bilateral coronal synostosis; type II, pansynostosis; type III, perpendicular combinations of cranial vault suture synostoses. Orbit bony cavity volume was significantly reduced in type I and type II, by 19% (P < 0.001) and 24% (P < 0.001), re

PURPOSE: Imaging modalities such as micro-CT scanning and three-dimensional reconstruction are providing a mechanism for detailed analysis of skeletal components not only of normal specimens but also through revisitation of the abnormal. The aim of this study was to analyse the craniofacial skeleton of five human fetuses with cyclopia by means of micro-CT scanning and three-dimensional reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study consisted of five cyclopean individuals from the paediatric collection of the School of Anatomical Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. The specimens range

The research was designed to use computed tomography (CT) with 3D-CT reconstruction imaging techniques and the various anatomical sections-plana transversalia, frontalis, and dorsalia-to describe the anatomical architecture of the Zebu cattle head. Our study used nine mature heads. The CT bone window created detailed images of cranial bones, mandibles, teeth, and hyoid bones. All of the head cavities were evaluated, including the cranial, orbital, oral, auricular, and nasal cavities with their paranasal and conchal sinuses. The septum nasi, attached to the vomer and maxillary bones, did not re

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of bone originating from the connective tissue within the bone marrow is benign but locally aggressive lesion. In all, 90% of the cases involve the epiphysis of long bones and less than 2% involve the skull. Giant cell tumors of the skull occur most frequently in the sphenoid and temporal bones, and very rarely in the ethmoid, frontal, parietal, and occipital bones. We would like to share a case of giant cell tumor of bone arising from the left orbital roof with involving ethmoid sinus, which was diagnosed to be a meningioma before surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoma is a benign slow growing bone tumor with a prevalence of 3% of all benign paranasal sinuses tumors, with a peak incidence between the fourth and sixth decades, mostly involving frontal sinuses.(1) PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a case of a large right ethmoidal sinus osteoma in a 12-year-old boy, complaining of frontal headaches and excessive lacrimation of the right eye. CT scan showed a very large tumor in the right anterior ethmoidal sinus (30mm×25mm×15mm).
DISCUSSION: Large osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are usually resected by external approaches. However, the

The clinical and radiological findings in a 71-year-old woman with a metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the right nasal cavity are presented. The kidney tumor manifested clinically as epistaxis. Computed tomography revealed an expansile lesion in the right nasal cavity with extension to the right antrum, right ethmoid sinus, and left nasal cavity. There was no lytic bone destruction, but there was displacement of bone caused by the expansile tumor mass.
