What is the Role of the Oncology Nurse Leader in Building Oncology Nursing Capacity in Malawi?

As someone who wanted to make others smile, I realized that nursing was the only profession that could help me achieve my purpose. The realization of my love of nursing unfolded when I entered the Kamuzu College of Nursing in 2008. As a nursing student, I wanted to provide excellent nursing care. In my third year of my BScN studies, I had a clinical home-based rotation in Lilongwe, Malawi, where I was introduced to chronically ill patients. I realized that this chronically ill population was the most neglected in Malawi, similar to populations in other sub-Saharan African countries. My exposur

An Eye on Vision: Five Questions About Vision Screening and Eye Health-Part 3.

Current evidence-based and best practice vision screening and eye health approaches, tools, and procedures are the result of revised national guidelines in the past 3 years and advances in research during the past 18 years. To help the busy school nurse with little time to keep up with changes in children's vision practices and a growing body of literature, the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness is providing answers to five questions that are often received from the field. Topical areas are: (1) instrument-based screening for children ages 6 years and old

Does school scoliosis screening make the grade?

School nurses have provided routine health screenings of school-age children for decades. During the 1970s, recommendations for school scoliosis screening, which were based upon poor access to health care, led state boards of education to mandate that school nurses screen for scoliosis. The history of mandated scoliosis screening in U.S. schools is reviewed, and current school nurse practices for scoliosis screening are presented. Elevated referral rates for repeat scoliosis examination following school scoliosis screenings have led to questions of efficacy. Further controversy exists regardin

Rhetoric versus reality: The role of research in deconstructing concepts of caring.

Our aim was to employ a critical analytic lens to explicate the role of nursing research in supporting the notion of caring realities. To do this, we used case exemplars to illustrate the infusion of such discourses. The first exemplar examines the fundamental concept of caring: using Florence Nightingale's Notes on Nursing, the case study surfaces caring as originally grounded in ritualized practice and subsequently describes its transmutation, via competing discourses, to a more holistic concept. It is argued that in the many and varied attempts to define the dynamic concept of care, caring

An Evidence-Based Nurse-Led Intervention to Reduce Diabetes Distress Among Adults With Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetes Distress (REDUCE): Development of a Complex Intervention Using Qualitative Methods Informed by the Medical Research Council Framework.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes distress refers to the negative emotional reaction to living with the demands of diabetes; it occurs in >40% of adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, no interventions to reduce diabetes distress are specifically designed to be an integral part of diabetes care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to modify and adapt existing evidence-based methods into a nurse-led group intervention to reduce diabetes distress among adults with T1D and moderate to severe diabetes distress. METHODS: The overall framework of this study was informed by the initial phase of the Medical Research

Evaluation of innovative research-based fact sheets.

Research-based fact sheets are simple, clear, and concise one-page reviews of a topic (e.g., culture and ethnicity, homelessness) with tips to improve culturally competent care. Using research helps nurses achieve promotion, advance careers, and enhance patient care. The background, literature, purpose, methods, and evaluation of fact sheets are reported. In a survey, 142 nurses reported that the fact sheets about general topics (end of life, depression, heart failure, smoking cessation, ethnicity, homelessness, hypertension, conflict management, medication safety, and pressure ulcers) were 99

Neurological assessment.

Neurological system assessment is an important skill for the orthopaedic nurse because the nervous system has such an overlap with the musculoskeletal system. Nurses whose scope of practice includes such advanced evaluation, e.g. nurse practitioners, may conduct the examination described here but the information will also be useful for nurses caring for patients who have abnormal neurological assessment findings. Within the context of orthopaedic physical assessment, possible neurological findings are evaluated as they complement the patient's history and the examiner's findings. Specific neur

Best practice skin antisepsis for insertion of peripheral catheters.

This article discusses the importance of effective skin antisepsis prior to the insertion of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) and how best clinical practice is promoted by application of an appropriate method of skin disinfection integrated effectively with a proprietary aseptic non touch technique, or other standard aseptic technique. Historically under-reported, incidence of infection and risk to patients from PIVCs is now increasingly being recognised, with new research and evidence raising concern and helping to drive new clinical guidance and improvement. The risks posed by PIVCs

Putting evidence into practice: cancer-related lymphedema.

Cancer-related lymphedema is a progressive and chronic syndrome of abnormal swelling and multiple symptoms resulting from cancer treatment. Even with modern medical advances, lymphedema remains a major health problem affecting thousands of cancer survivors. To provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for lymphedema treatment and management, a systematic review was conducted to evaluate 75 selected articles from 2009-2014 by the Oncology Nursing Society Putting Evidence Into Practice lymphedema team. Findings of the systematic review support complete dec

Promoting evidence-based practice through a traveling journal club.

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Lifelong learning is essential in today's work world, with the rapid explosion of knowledge and technology. Busy nurses find the challenge overwhelming to keep pace with current practice. Journal clubs work within inpatient settings but not for ambulatory nurses where the pace is much different. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT/INNOVATION: A group consisting of 2 clinical nurse specialists and the director of nursing research developed the concept of a traveling journal club where articles were selected specific to the needs of the population served by ambulatory nurses. Evidence-based suction management in accident and emergency: a vital component of airway care.

Effective airway management aims to establish and maintain a patent airway to ensure adequate alveolar ventilation and patient survival. Suction therapy must be regarded as a vital component of airway care, with all staff who are required to perform this procedure being aware of the principles of safe, effective suctioning. This paper provides an outline of the types of suction catheters available for use in the emergency care setting, and describes the safe procedures to be followed for both endotracheal and oro-pharyngeal suctioning. Potential complications are discussed other headings of re

Current evidence in the management of poststroke hemiplegic shoulder pain: a review.

Hemiplegic shoulder pain is a common, complex, and distressing complication, which is related to stroke and occurs in the paralytic side of the patient. It not only presents in the early stage but also can persist into the chronic stage of stroke. The incidence of this complication varies from 12% to 58%, and the most common period of occurrence is at 8-10 weeks poststroke. The multifactorial etiology and underlying mechanisms make it intractable. It is difficult to get a clear description of the percentage of patients receiving adequate pain relief because of a large number of treatments and

Nursing harm reduction education and care for people who use drugs or who engage in sex work.

Harm reduction is an evidence-based approach that could promote health equity through the implementation of pragmatic strategies for people who use drugs or who engage in sex work. The purposes of this study were to describe whether nurses received harm reduction education in their nursing programs, whether nurses are practicing harm reduction, and strategies for integrating harm reduction within nursing curriculum. An online survey was delivered to nurses and an interview with a nurse harm reductionist was conducted. Among the 30 survey participants, only 17% (n = 5) stated they were taught a
