Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP's) were recorded in 19 patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage. More than half of the patients were deeply comatose. There was no correlation between BAEP changes and different types of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage or between BAEP's and coma grading by the Glasgow Coma Scale. However, BAEP's were a significant prognostic aid in these cases and useful in indicating the level of the brain-stem lesion.

Auditory evoked potentials and in this context especially five waves in the first 10 ms (early auditory evoked potentials = EAEP) are a diagnostic aid in topodiagnosis of posterior fossa diseases. This is due to waves I to V which arise along the acoustic nerve and in brain stem structures such as medulla, pons and mid-brain. Besides an indication about the site of a lesion in the posterior fossa, wave V allows an objective threshold determination. The present results were gained in normal children aged 1-3 years and in children with neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

The evolutionary changes of evoked potentials (EPs) were studied from the neonatal period up to 1 year of age in 41 infants with various perinatal disorders. Abnormal EPs in the first week of life recovered quickly. In infants with normal outcome, abnormal EPs became normal within a month. In infants with cerebral palsy (CP) or mental retardation (MR), EPs recovered within 2-3 months of age. Infants with more severe neurological damage showed abnormal EPs even beyond 6 months of age. Abnormal EPs beyond 2 weeks of age indicated poor prognosis. As for the wave form of EPs, absent responses or a

Gentamicin is a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly targets Gram-negative microbes. Both human and animal studies have shown that administration of gentamicin is ototoxic by several routes of administration and results in sensorineural hearing loss due to damaged hair cell at the base of the cochlea. However, gentamicin is also administered intranasally to treat sinusitis in humans, but no animal studies have examined ototoxicity of gentamicin administered via this route. We hypothesized that intranasal irrigation of gentamicin will result in ototoxicity and impaired auditory f

Auditory evoked potentials (EVP) are an effective and non-invasive way to assess the functional state of the auditory nerve and auditory sensory pathways of the brainstem. An increase in the latent periods of peaks III, IV, V, as well as a lengthening of the time of central sound conduction of III-V and I-V waves in all newborns with hyperbilirubinemia, indicates a pathology of hearing of central origin with impaired conduction along the auditory pathways at the level of the lower and middle third of the brain pons.

Neural responses to sensory inputs in a complex and natural environment must be weighted according to their relevance. To do so, the brain needs to be able to deal with sudden stimulus fluctuations in an ever-changing acoustic environment. Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) is a phenomenon of some neurons along the auditory pathway that show a reduced response to repetitive sounds while responsive to those that occur rarely. SSA has been shown from the inferior colliculus to auditory cortex, but has not been detected in the cochlear nucleus. To discover where SSA is first generated along the a

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the development of mental, motor, cognitive, and social functions via its role in DNA synthesis and nerve myelination. Its deficiency in infants might cause neuromotor retardation as well as megaloblastic anemia. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of infantile vitamin B12 deficiency on evoked brain potentials and determine whether improvement could be obtained with vitamin B12 replacement at appropriate dosages.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with vitamin B12 deficiency and 30 age-matched healthy controls w

Investigations into the biology of aquatic and semiaquatic species, including those involving sensory specialization, often require creative solutions to novel questions. We developed a technique for safely anesthetizing a semiaquatic chelonian species, the diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin), for measurement of auditory evoked potentials while animals were completely submerged in water. Custom-modified endotracheal tubes were used to obtain a watertight seal on both sides of the glottis and prevent aspiration of water during testing. No adverse effects were seen after the procedures, a

We studied central nervous system lesions in patients with neuro-Behcet's disease using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and recording of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). MRI revealed abnormal findings in seven of eight patients. MRI studies demonstrated extensive regions with high intensity signal in the brain stem and/or basal ganglia on T2-weighted images obtained during the acute stage of the disease in three patients. One of these patients had a strongly gadolinum-enhanced round lesion in the lower pons. In four of the other five patients with chronic disease, b

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) and blink reflexes (BR) were obtained from 13 patients with pontocerebellar angle (PCA) tumors whose pathological diagnosis was as follows: 7 acoustic neurinoma, 3 meningioma, 1 neurinoma, 1 brain stem epidermoid tumor, 1 arteriovenous malformation. The most prominent abnormality was noted in BAEP generated by stimulating the ear ipsilateral to the lesion and ipsilateral R1 reflexes obtained from ipsilateral stimulation of the supraorbital nerve.

Thirty men and 30 women, 20-25 years old, and selected for presence or absence of anxiety were exposed successively for 15 min to four different noises at the same continuous equivalent level LAeq = 75 dB. Auditory brainstem evoked potentials were recorded before and after exposure to each noise. No difference was found between these noises as to their effects upon evoked potentials. After exposure to noise a significant lengthening of L1, L3 and L5 latencies was observed in men; in women a significant lengthening of L3 and L5 latencies was also present. At the same time, I-V and III-V interva

Cranium and brainstem dimensions were measured in 32 postmortem dog heads. Positive correlations were found between cranium length (CL) and brainstem length (BL) (r = 0.87), between cranium width (CW) and brainstem width (BW) (r = 0.83), and between cranium distance (CD = CL+CW/2) and brainstem distance (BD = BL+BW/2) (r = 0.91). Positive correlation coefficients were also found between CL and CW (r = 0.90), and between BL and BW (r = 0.85). It was concluded that head size accurately reflected brainstem size. A least squares estimation of the brainstem distance (BD) from CL and CW values was B

We examined brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in 28 children with cerebrovascular diseases and 38 normal control subjects and investigated the neuroanatomic correlations of the late waves (VI and VII) of the BAEPs. The patients included 19 patients with moyamoya disease and 9 with other cerebrovascular accidents. Wave VI was more consistently seen (only missing in 2 cases, 5%-2 ears, 3%) than wave VII (missing in 26 cases, 68%-40 ears, 53%) in the control group. Absent, depressed or prolonged wave VI correlated well with cerebral lesions involving internal capsule and basal ganglia,

A study was conducted in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) neonates to correlate structural damage to the central nervous system due to intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) with electrophysiological function of the lower auditory system as measured by brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP). BAEP testing of 61 VLBW neonates was completed at 36 weeks conceptional age. BAEP Wave III and V latencies significantly increased with increasing severity of ICH. Although significant at conventional levels (P less than 0.05), these correlations were of modest size. Furthermore, after adjusting for the effects of

Twenty-five hyperlipidemic, neurologically and audiologically asymptomatic patients were compared to 20 normolipemic control subjects regarding different interpeak latency differences (IPLD) of auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEP). ABEP were recorded in response to click stimuli presented at a rate of 10/sec and 55/sec. The net effect of increasing stimulus rate (ISR) on IPLD of ABEP was significantly greater in the hyperlipidemic patients for IPLD (V-I) and IPLD (III-I). ISR of ABEP indicates a trend of subclinical impairments of brain stem function in hyperlipidemic patients, probabl

The purpose of this study is to investigate the diagnostic value of using brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BSEP) in patients with the lateral medullary (Wallenberg's) syndrome. The observed changes included: prolongation of the interpeak latency intervals from wave I to V and III to V; prolongation of the interaural latency difference for wave V; splitting or absence of wave III, and the presence of a broad partly fused wave III-V complex. The present study showed that BSEP can be used to confirm the diagnosis of this syndrome and ascertain the site of the lesion.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 23 children who had signs of brain-stem or cerebellar dysfunction. In patients with brain-stem gliomas, BAEPs were abnormal in all except one, in whom involvement of the brain-stem auditory pathway was limited to the midbrain tectum. The BAEPs were normal in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, but abnormal bilaterally in inheritable leukoencephalopathies. All patients with Leigh's encephalopathy had BAEP abnormalities; in two, abnormalities occurred before the appearance of lesions on computed tomographic scan. Patients with Friedreich
