Prevalence and Associated Factors of Antenatal Depressive Symptoms in Pregnant Women Living in an Urban Area of Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major public health problem in middle- and low-income countries. Depression in pregnancy has adverse effects on obstetric outcomes. Maternal depression remains under-recognized, under-diagnosed and undertreated in Thailand. Antenatal screening of depression is an important strategy to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. This problem has rarely been investigated in Thailand, especially in urban areas. OBJECTIVE: To discover the prevalence, associated factors, and predictive factors of depression in pregnant women living in an urban area. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Diverse clinical presentations of celiac disease in the same family.

We performed a family study to evaluate a total of 34 extended family members (8 siblings, 23 children and nephews, and 3 grandchildren) of an adult patient with celiac disease (CD), a 58- year-old male with severe neurologic involvement manifested as myoclonias. We found 3 other members affected with CD (a 44-year old sister, a 39-year old niece, and a 26-year old nephew). Two of them were completely asymptomatic and all had hypertransaminasemia. All exhibited a villous atrophy pattern of the duodenal mucosa (1 mild, 1 moderate, 1 severe). Overall family involvement was 11.8% (4/14). We wish

The Stranger at Home: Lived Experiences of Online Gambling Within the Family in Siirt, Türkiye.

Online gambling is a growing public health concern whose harms extend to the family, yet its familial consequences remain underexplored in contexts where gambling is illegal and extended-family ties are strong. This study examined how men who gamble online perceive gambling to affect their families in Siirt, Türkiye. Using a qualitative exploratory design, in-person semi-structured interviews with nine married or previously married men who currently or formerly gambled online (recruited via purposive and snowball sampling) were analyzed with a hybrid deductive-inductive, codebook thematic anal

Family sources of weight teasing and associations with adolescents' unhealthy eating behaviors, weight bias internalization, and body appreciation.

OBJECTIVE: Family-based weight teasing is a common and harmful experience among adolescents. However, most research treats the family as a unitary source, with little examination of how weight stigma manifests from different family members. This study examined associations between weight teasing from 11 types of family members with adolescents' weight bias internalization (WBI), body appreciation, binge eating with loss of control (BE-LOC) and overeating, and unhealthy weight control behaviors. METHODS: A national sample of 1,073 U.S. adolescents (ages 10-17) completed online questionnaires.

Outbreak of tuberculosis associated with a church.

Investigation of an outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) in a West Midlands health district in 1999 revealed spread in an extended family network and to church contacts. Within the family four cases of smear positive TB, four cases of smear negative infection, and 14 cases requiring chemoprophylaxis were identified. One of the infectious cases visited a local church on two occasions, which resulted in a further 16 cases of infection including one case of tuberculous meningitis. DNA fingerprinting of isolates from five culture positive cases indicated that the same strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Identification of a dominant MYH11 causal variant in chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction: Results of whole-exome sequencing.

Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction (CIPO) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder, which affects the smooth muscle contractions of the gastrointestinal tract. Dominant mutations in the smooth muscle actin gene, ACTG2, accounts for 44%-50% of CIPO patients. Other recessive or X-linked genes, including MYLK, LMOD1, RAD21, MYH11, MYL9, and FLNA were reported in single cases. In this study, we used Whole-Exome Sequencing (WES) to study 23 independent CIPO families including one extended family with 13 affected members. A dominantly inherited rare mutation, c.5819delC (p.Pro1940HisfsTer91), in the s

The relationship of family stability and family mealtime frequency with bulimia symptomatology.

The present study extended previous research reporting an association between frequency of family mealtimes and bulimia nervosa by exploring whether family mealtimes might be a component of a larger construct of family stability. One hundred thirty-four female undergraduates completed retrospective measures of family stability, frequency of shared family mealtimes, and a measure of bulimia symptomatology. Results indicate that family stability is a more comprehensive predictor of bulimia symptomatology than meal frequency alone. Implications for intervention and treatment options are discussed

Family connectedness and women's sexual risk behaviors: implications for the prevention/intervention of STD/HIV infection.

The present study explores the relationship between connectedness with the intergenerational family and women's sexual risk-taking as a guide to the development of family-focused prevention and intervention. Cross-sectional interview data from a pilot study were analyzed for correlations between a number of self-reported, risky sexual practices, the range of extended family members with whom the respondent was in contact, and awareness of stories pertaining to intergenerational family history. Structured interviews were administered by female interviewers to 56 women from two contexts: a STD (

Factors influencing marital stability among HIV discordant couples in northern Thailand.

The burden of HIV in stable relationships places emotional, economic and physical stresses on families. We compared the influence of HIV notification on marital partnerships in northern Thailand among a cohort of HIV discordant couples, and identified factors associated with marital disruption. Data were collected using in-depth interviews with both members of six separated or divorced couples and 13 couples whose relationship remained intact. Five factors influenced marital stability following HIV notification: longer duration of relationship; economic constraints, extended family members' op

Rapid identification of carbapenemase-type blaGES and ESBL-type blaGES using multiplex PCR.

Guiana extended-spectrum (GES) β-lactamases are emerging in Japan. The GES family can be classified into 2 groups, one with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-like activity, which hydrolyzes penicillins and cephalosporins, and the other with carbapenemase-like activity with an extended spectrum toward carbapenems. This difference is mediated by variations in a specific amino acid in the GES protein: G170 N or G170S substitutions. We developed an amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS) PCR assay that enabled rapid identification of these variant genes without sequencing.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in Papua New Guinea.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is characterized by (a) onset usually in childhood and adolescence between 2 and 15 years of age, (b) violent facial tics and coprolalia, (c) increased excitability and apathy, (d) progressive increase in the intensity of symptoms, and (e) a chronic course. The syndrome is three times more common in males than in females. It is no longer considered the rarity it used to be, with a reported frequency of 1 to 5 per 10,000 population in western countries. This paper is the first report of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in Papua New Guinea. The family history method

Collective trauma in the Vanni- a qualitative inquiry into the mental health of the internally displaced due to the civil war in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: From January to May, 2009, a population of 300,000 in the Vanni, northern Sri Lanka underwent multiple displacements, deaths, injuries, deprivation of water, food, medical care and other basic needs caught between the shelling and bombings of the state forces and the LTTE which forcefully recruited men, women and children to fight on the frontlines and held the rest hostage. This study explores the long term psychosocial and mental health consequences of exposure to massive, existential trauma. METHODS: This paper is a qualitative inquiry into the psychosocial situation of the Van

Household outbreak of Q-fever pneumonia related to a parturient cat.

An outbreak of febrile respiratory disease occurred over 11 days among thirteen adults in Nova Scotia, all members of an extended family and their friends. Signs of illness included bradycardia at the same time as fever, palatal petechiae, and rapidly enlarging bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. Ten of the patients had a four-fold rise in antibody to phase-2 Q-fever antigen as determined by complement fixation on acute and 4-week-convalescent serum samples. Six children of the extended family for whom a four-fold titre rise was shown had slight or no disease. Investigations showed that the illne

Breastfeeding in Turkey: practices, barriers, and cultural dynamics for global insights.

OBJECTIVE: Breastfeeding is globally recognized as the cornerstone of infant nutrition, offering unparalleled benefits for maternal and child health. However, exclusive breastfeeding rates remain below international targets, influenced by sociocultural, economic, and individual factors. This study aims to investigate breastfeeding practices in Türkiye, identify influencing factors, and compare these findings with global trends to highlight both commonalities and country-specific dynamics. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital between June and August

Alloparental Support and Infant Psychomotor Developmental Delay.

Receiving social support from community and extended family has been typical for mothers with infants in human societies past and present. In non-industrialised contexts, infants of mothers with extended family support often have better health and higher survival through the vulnerable infant period, and hence shared infant care has a clear fitness benefit. However, there is scant evidence that these benefits continue in industrialised contexts. Better infant health and development with allocare support would indicate continued evolutionary selection for allocare. The research reported here us

A large family with hereditary spastic paraparesis due to a frame shift mutation of the spastin (SPG4) gene: association with multiple sclerosis in two affected siblings and epilepsy in other affected family members.

Hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder characterised by progressive lower limb spasticity and weakness. Some forms have been associated with white matter lesions and complex phenotypes. This study was prompted by the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in two sisters from a large pedigree with hereditary spastic paraparesis. Twelve affected members of the extended family were examined (MRI and EEG were carried out and evoked potentials measured in five), and historical information was obtained from six affected deceased pe
