Acclimation temperature influences the thermal sensitivity of injury accumulation in Folsomia candida at extreme low and high temperatures.

The importance of thermal acclimation for the Thermal Death Time (TDT) landscape of the common soil living springtail, Folsomia candida (Collembola, Isotomidae), was investigated. To this aim, we acclimated adult springtails at 10 °C (cold-acclimation) and 20 °C (warm-acclimation), respectively. In static thermal tolerance assays, we found the relationship between survival and exposure time at a number of stressful high and low temperatures. Using logistic modelling, we found, at each exposure temperature, the time until 50% mortality had been reached (Lt50). The exponential functions of TDT c

Extreme climatic events and human biology and health: A primer and opportunities for future research.

Extreme climatic events are increasing in frequency, leading to hotter temperatures, flooding, droughts, severe storms, and rising oceans. This special issue brings together a collection of seven articles that describe the impacts of extreme climatic events on a diverse set of human biology and health outcomes. The first two articles cover extreme temperatures extending from extreme heat to cold and changes in winter weather and the respective implications for adverse health events, human environmental limits, well-being, and human adaptability. Next, two articles cover the effects of exposure

Winter Swimming: Body Hardening and Cardiorespiratory Protection Via Sustainable Acclimation.

Winter swimming is a stressful condition of whole-body exposure to cold water; however, winter swimmers have achieved variable degrees of adaptation to cold. The question arises whether this extreme sport activity has any health benefits or whether it may confer potentially harmful effects. As a form of aerobic exercise, albeit more strenuous when performed in cold water, winter swimming may increase body tolerance to stressors and achieve body hardening. When practiced by individuals who are in good general health adopting a regular, graded and adaptive mode, winter swimming seems to confer c

Cold weather operations: Preventive strategies in a military context.

Military cold weather operations (CWOs) introduce a range of challenges, including extreme temperatures, strong winds, difficult terrain, and exposure to snow, ice, and water. Personnel undertaking these missions face a heightened risk of cold weather injury (CWI), such as hypothermia, freezing cold injuries, and non-freezing cold injuries. The risk of these injuries is influenced by various factors, including age, sex, and body composition. To ensure optimal and safe performance in CWOs, it is crucial to implement effective preventive measures against CWI. This article emphasizes the most per

Cold hypersensitivity 6 to 10 years after replantation or revascularisation of fingers: consequences for work and leisure activities.

We investigated cold hypersensitivity and activity in 81 adults (male/female 76/5), 6 to 10 years after finger replantation/revascularisation (mean age at injury 43 (SD 15) years). Questionnaires included the McCabe Cold Sensitivity Severity Scale, Potential Work-Exposure Scale and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Eighty per cent of the respondents were cold hypersensitive; 20% were severely or extremely cold hypersensitive. Of the 74 patients employed at injury, 7% had changed work and 4% were not working due to cold hypersensitivity. The median score for cold expo

Frigophobia: a case series from Sri Lanka.

Frigophobia is a condition in which patients report coldness of extremities leading to a morbid fear of death. It has been reported as a rare culture-related psychiatric syndrome in Chinese populations. An extensive survey of the literature yielded only six case reports. The present paper describes a series of 109 patients with frigophobia in Sri Lanka. The common clinical presentation was of patients initially examining their extremities for cold sensations, and then, with the onset of fear, covering themselves in layers of clothing, applying emollients, and staying near an open fire in an ef

When income buffers extreme weather: Impacts on women's mental health in informal settlements.

Climate change threatens mental health, especially for the more than one billion residents in informal settlements worldwide. Utilizing longitudinal data collected from women in households in two of Nairobi's largest informal settlements, we examined the mental health impacts of extreme weather and moderating effects of income. Eighteen monthly surveys (September 2022-February 2024) captured experiences of heat, cold, drought, heavy rain, and flooding alongside symptoms of anxiety and depression. Heat, cold, and drought were associated with increased anxiety and depression while heavy rain red

Breaking the low-temperature limit: an amino-engineered HATN anode for -80 °C aqueous alkaline batteries via robust hydrogen-bonding networks.

Developing high-performance aqueous alkaline batteries for extreme environments remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a triamino-substituted hexaazatrinaphthalene (HATN-3NH2) as a tailor-made anode for alkaline systems. Unlike hydroxyl-functionalized analogues that suffer from rapid dissolution in alkaline electrolytes, the amino group ensures exceptional chemical stability while its electron-donating nature effectively lowers the redox potential to -1.12 vs. Hg/HgO. Crucially, the introduced amino groups construct a robust intermolecular hydrogen-bond network that significantly en

Fatty acid profiles and tolerance to temperature extremes in Daphnia pulex.

Identification of physiological processes setting thermal tolerance limits is essential to describing adaptive response to temperature changes. We used the North American Daphnia pulex complex, which makes a remarkable model for comparative physiology as it is composed of clones differing in heat tolerance and ploidies, and with a wide geographic distribution. The fatty acid composition of 18 diploid and triploid D. pulex clones acclimated to 16°C and 24°C was measured and compared with their tolerance to extreme high and low temperatures (CTmax and CTmin, respectively). Eicosapentaenoic acid

Neuroinflammation induced by secretion of acetylated HMGB1 from activated microglia in hippocampi of mice following chronic cold exposure.

Stress is a nonspecific response to adverse circumstances and chronic stress can destroy homeostasis, leading to various primary diseases. Although chronic cold stress is becoming increasingly important for individuals living or working in extreme environments, the risk of associated disorders of the central nervous system remains unstudied. Here, male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to a temperature of 4 °C, for three hours each day for one, two or three weeks. Glial cell activation, neuronal structure, and neuroinflammation were then evaluated by western blotting, immunofluorescence, Nissl stainin

Extreme temperature events and hospitalizations for 59 autoimmune diseases in Korea: A nationwide outcome-wide, time-stratified, case-crossover study.

Extreme temperature events are increasing in frequency and intensity, yet their effects on autoimmune diseases remain poorly understood. Using nationwide inpatient claims from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (2002 -2023), we assessed short-term associations between extreme temperatures and hospitalizations for 59 autoimmune conditions. A time-stratified case-crossover design with conditional logistic regression was applied. Heat waves and cold spells were defined using district-specific temperature percentiles (95th, 97.5th, and 99th for heat; 5th, 2.5th, and 1st for cold) and sin

Adaptive metabolic responses in a thermostabilized environment: Transgenerational trade-off implications from tropical tilapia.

Relatively warm environments caused by global warming enhance the productivity of aquaculture activities in tropical/subtropical regions; however, the intermittent cold stress (ICS) caused by negative Arctic Oscillation can still result in major economic losses. In contrast to endotherms, ectothermic fishes experience ambient temperature as an abiotic factor that is central to performance and survival. Therefore, the occurrence of extreme temperatures caused by climate change has ignited a surge of scientific interest from ecologists, economists and physiologists. In this study, we test the tr

Effects of short-term antioxidant supplementation on oxidative stress and exercise performance in the heat and the cold.

The effects of short-term as well as long-term antioxidant supplementation on exercise performance in the heat or the cold are unknown. Based on our recent studies we hypothesized that short-term supplementation with alpha-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) would decrease oxidative stress but without significant impairment of maximal exercise performance in the heat or the cold. During a 5-week period young and welltrained participants performed 5 incremental treadmill tests to exhaustion under different temperature conditions (normal: 20°C, cold: +7°C, heat: +33°C) a

Exploration of extremophilic microorganisms for production and applications of exopolysaccharides.

Extremophilic microorganisms live in extreme environmental conditions such as high or low temperature, high or low pH, high concentration of salt and accordingly are classified as thermophilic, psychrophilic, alkaliphilic, acidophilic and halophilic respectively. They adapt themselves to the extreme conditions by producing novel biomolecules like heat shock proteins, cold active enzymes, compatible solutes and exopolysaccharides. Extremophilic microorganisms maintain their cellular integrity with the help of exopolysaccharide (EPS) which constitutes slime or a hydrated matrix that keeps the ce
