Clinical and Microbiological Characteristics of Meningococcal Eye Infections: Retrospective National Surveillance in England, 2010-2022.

OBJECTIVES: Neisseria meningitidis is primarily associated with severe systemic infections but can infect the eye and periocular tissues. Most meningococcal eye infections have a mild prognosis, but there is a significant increase in the risk of invasive disease. UK public health guidelines recommend chemoprophylaxis for meningococcal eye infection cases and contacts. This study involved a clinical and microbiological analysis of meningococcal eye infections in England over a 13-year period. METHODS: The analysis included all English cases of eye infection with confirmed isolation of N. menin…

Structure-based drug target prioritisation and rational drug design for targeting Chlamydia trachomatis eye infections.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C.t) is a major causative of infectious blindness in world. It is a real challenge to combat Chlamydial infection as it is an intracellular pathogen. Hence, it is essential to determine the most potential targets of C.t in order to inhibit or suppress its virulence during its infectious phase. Thus, in this study, the highly expressed-cum-most essential genes reported through our earlier study were reprioritized by structure-based comparative binding site analysis with host proteome. Therefore, computational approaches involving molecular modelling, large-scale binding s

Mycobacterium chelonae Eye Infections Associated with Humidifier Use in an Outpatient LASIK Clinic--Ohio, 2015.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) eye surgery is increasingly common, with approximately 600,000 procedures performed each year in the United States. LASIK eye surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting and involves the use of a machine-guided laser to reshape the lens of the eye to correct vision irregularities. Clinic A is an ambulatory surgery center that performs this procedure on 1 day each month. On February 5, 2015, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department (TLCHD) in Ohio was notified of eye infections in two of the six patients who had undergone LASIK procedur…

Risk Behaviors for Contact Lens-Related Eye Infections Among Adults and Adolescents - United States, 2016.

Contact lens-related eye infections, which can lead to serious outcomes, including blindness, are associated with several risk factors, including sleeping in lenses, exposing lenses to water, not adhering to replacement schedules, and reusing disinfecting solution (1). In some studies, adolescent and young adult contact lens wearers have been reported to be more likely than older adult contact lens wearers to develop eye infections (2,3) and more likely to have poor contact lens hygiene practices (2). In 2015, CDC reported the number and demographics of adult contact lens wearers in the United…

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections of the eye and orbit (an American Ophthalmological Society thesis).

PURPOSE: To ascertain if methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ophthalmic infections are increasing. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with a culture positive for MRSA in the Parkland Health and Hospital System, the urban public healthcare system for Dallas County, Texas, for the years 2000 through 2004 was performed. Patients with ocular, orbital, and ocular adnexal infection were identified, and isolates were categorized as nosocomial or community-acquired (CA). RESULTS: A total of 3,640 patients with a culture positive for MRSA were identified, with 1,088 patien

Liquid versus solid culture media for the microbiological diagnosis of eye infections: a retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Ocular infections are an important cause of preventable vision loss, yet culture yield is limited by small specimen volumes and low bacterial loads. Comparisons of liquid and solid media in ocular infection are scarce. We evaluated four bedside-inoculated media: two liquid (Brucella broth, thioglycolate broth) and two solid (chocolate agar, 5% sheep blood agar). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 102 ocular specimens collected between January 2023 and August 2025, each inoculated simultaneously onto all four media at the bedside. Because solid media were incubated for 7 days and

Genetic features of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates associated with eye infections referred to Farabi Hospital, Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas is the most common cause of microbial keratitis especially in people who use contact lens. The virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in different eye infections is associated with different virulence factors . METHODS: In this study, 54 P. aeruginosa isolates including 39 isolates from keratitis and 15 isolates from conjunctivitis were evaluated for their ability to form biofilm, production of protease, elastase, alkaline protease and their antibiotic-resistant patterns. The distribution of the exoS and exoU genes in the test strains were determined using PCR assays. RE…

Identification of unknown ocular pathogens in clinically suspected eye infections using ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis.

DNA sequence-based identification of pathogens from ocular samples of patients with clinically suspected eye infections was accomplished using 16S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis. PCR was positive for 24 of 99 samples tested. Both culture and 16S rDNA sequence analysis identified Pseudomonas aeruginosa, streptococci and Enterobacteriaceae. Isolates misidentified as Burkholderia cepacia by biochemical tests were identified as Ralstonia mannitolilytica by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Sequence analysis identified the following microorganisms from 19 cultu…

Immunity to chlamydial infections of the eye. IV. Immunity in owl monkeys to reinfection with trachoma.

In a study of trachoma in owl monkeys, it was found that owl monkeys are equally susceptible to low and high doses of trachoma and that resistance to reinfection persisted for six months in the majority of animals. Previous infections with a single trachoma type did not elicit greater resistance than previous infections with two types. Both serum antibodies and eye secretion titers correlated well with resistance to reinfection, but it is not as yet clear if either or both play a substantial role in immunity to trachoma.

Immunity to chlamydial infections of the eye. V. Passive transfer of antitrachoma antibodies to owl monkeys.

Previous studies have shown that owl monkeys which have had a trachoma agent infection were subsequently highly resistant to challenge by both homologous and heterologous organisms. In the present study, passive transfer of owl monkey serum containing antitrachoma antibody from immune monkeys did not protect recipient monkeys from infectious challenge with homologous trachoma. Antibody was not detectable in eye secretions of the recipient monkeys until the intensity of infection was waning, suggesting but not proving that local antibody synthesis rather than simple transudation of serum antibo

Pharmacokinetics and efficacy of the new quinolones in infections of the eye, ear, nose, and throat.

A review of published data indicates that the new quinolones readily penetrate the tissues and secretions of the upper respiratory tract. The concentrations of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin in tonsillar tissue and the concentrations of ofloxacin in the mucosa of the paranasal sinuses generally exceeded the peak concentrations of these agents in serum after oral administration of the drugs. Good penetration was noted for ciprofloxacin into nasal secretions, ofloxacin into tears, and various quinolones into saliva. Penetration into ocular humors appears to be moderate. Reports in English concernin

Immunopathology of Toxocara canis and Ascaris suum infections of the eye: the role of the eosinophil.

Intravitreal infection of guinea pigs with second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis and second- and fourth-stage larvae of Ascaris suum induced intraocular IgE antibodies and a dense eosinophil infiltration in the anterior chamber and throughout the uveal tract. The eosinophil infiltrate began within 1 day after infection and persisted for as long as 51 days. By day 12 after intravitreal infection, the injected ascarid larvae were surrounded by granulomas which consisted almost entirely of eosinophils. Firm adherence of eosinophils to the parasite cuticle, morphologic alterations and degranulatio
