A survey was performed of all patients attending the combined Glasgow Eye Infirmary and Western Infirmary Eye Casualty Department with sports injuries. During an 18-month period a total of 246 patients presented with such injuries. Football was responsible for 110 (44.7%), rugby for 24 (9.8%), squash for 19 (7.7%), badminton for 16 (6.5%), and skiing for 9 (3.7%), and 68 (27.6%) were caused by other sports. Traumatic orbital complications of endonasal surgery, although rare, are a cause of significant morbidity. Although a variety of methods of monitoring eye function during surgery have been described, the best method remains direct perioperative observation of the eye. However, the eye must also be protected during surgery otherwise corneal drying will occur and corneal abrasion may result. This article describes and illustrates the use of Geliperm, a sterile, transparent, pliant hydrogel dressing, as a corneal protector allowing continuous observation of the eye during endonasal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Contact dermatitis of the eyelids is the most common cutaneous reaction that affects the eyelids. It is frequently caused by the cosmetics used on face, hair, and fingernails. Rarely, eyelid contact dermatitis can be caused by direct contact with either irritant or allergen.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of severe eyelid dermatitis caused by swimming goggles.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: A recent survey of general hospitals by the Victorian Injury Surveillance System found that ocular trauma represented 15% of work-related injuries. PURPOSE: Wildfire occurrence is increasing worldwide, putting firefighters and general public at increased risk of eye injuries from smoke exposure. This study explored ocular symptoms and use of protective eyewear amongst wildland firefighters in Australia.
METHODS: Australian wildland firefighters were invited to complete an online survey about the occurrence of eye irritation, use of protective eyewear and behaviours associated with occupational smoke exposure. Responses were analysed using logistic regression and qualitative inductive content analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to present the results of welders' occupational exposure to "blue light" and UV radiation carried out at industrial workstations during TIG and MMA welding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Measurements were performed at 13 workstations (TIG welding: 6; MMA welding: 7), at which different welding parameters and materials were used. The radiation level was measured using a wide-range radiometer and a set of detectors, whose spectral responses were adequately fit to particular hazard under study. The measurement points corresponded with the location of eye and hand.

Optimal management of corneal foreign-body injuries includes an accurate history, thorough examination of both eyes, atraumatic removal of the foreign body, elimination of the rust ring, appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis and protective patching. Pitfalls to be avoided include using topical steroids, which may promote ulceration from fungal contaminants, and prescribing topical anesthetics, which can mask the pain of a retained tarsal foreign body or a developing corneal ulcer. Careful records of care and follow-up are essential.
