Fascioliasis and paragonimiasis, which are caused by liver flukes (Fasciola) and lung flukes (Paragonimus), are emerging public health problems. Several hundred millions of people are at risk of the two diseases that cause considerable morbidity and delay socio-economic development. Triclabendazole, a benzimidazole derivative, has been routinely used since 1983 in veterinary medicine to control infections with Fasciola spp. in domestic herbivorous animals. In 1986, a veterinary formulation of triclabendazole was first administered to two human patients with fascioliasis. Clinical data obtained…

A seven-year-old girl with fascioliasis was treated with rafanoxide which is used for therapy of fascioliasis in sheep and cattle. This is the first report in the literature concerning the usage of rafanoxide in children according to our knowledge. Rafanoxide was given in a single dose of 7.5 mg per kg body weight orally.

A case of ectopic human Fasciola spp. infection in the cecal wall is reported. The patient, a 27-year-old Korean woman, resident in Seoul, Korea, presented with nausea, vomiting, and epigastric tenderness. One week later a palpable mass was discovered in the right iliac fossa. A clinical diagnosis of a carcinoma of the colon was made and the patient underwent a cecal resection. The mass proved to be an inflammatory reaction containing numerous tracts made by the migrating fluke, Fasciola sp.

We report a case of human Fasciola hepatica infection. For the first time evidence is presented of successful treatment of fascioliasis by oral administration of niclofolan, a biphenyl anthelmintic compound that is available for clinical testing in West Germany. Niclofolan therapy achieved elimination of eggs from the feces and normalization of eosinophil counts, liver enzymes and Fasciola titers, suggesting eradication of biliary flukes in our patient.

The laparoscopic findings in 18 cases of liver fascioliasis are described. The characteristic lesions are white and yellow cords on the liver surface that delineate the necrotic tunneliform areas created by the parasite as it penetrates the hepatic tissue. The peritoneum adjacent to the liver also is frequently involved. There was ascites in the 22.2% of the cases. Guided laparoscopic biopsy of peritoneal nodules and of visible liver lesions yielded significant findings more often that percutaneous liver biopsy alone.
