BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a condition that may be associated with substantial disability. The Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-36) is an instrument that has been widely used in outpatient populations to determine functional status. Our objectives were to describe the usefulness of the SF-36 in CFS patients and to determine if subscale scores could distinguish patients with CFS from subjects with unexplained chronic fatigue (CF), major depression (MD), or acute infectious mononucleosis (AIM), and from healthy control subjects (HC). An additional go…

INTRODUCTION: Children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are at risk of experiencing fatigue that negatively impacts their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aimed to assess the association between fatigue and HRQoL, by examining fatigue trajectories over 48 weeks, and assessing factors associated with these fatigue trajectories.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 173 DMD subjects enrolled in a 48-week-long phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00592553) for a novel therapeutic who were between the ages of 5 and 16 years.
RESULTS: The results of regression modeling show baselin…

Fatigue is a prevalent symptom in various rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is characterised as a subjective, enduring feeling of generalised tiredness or exhaustion, impacting the patient's life quality and exacerbating disability. The fatigue nature is multifaceted, encompassing physiological, psychological, and social factors, and although the exact cause of inflammatory joint diseases is not fully understood, several factors are believed to contribute to its development. Despite high prevalence and importance, the symptom …

Compassion fatigue and empathetic suffering are terms generally applied to health care providers caring for elderly people. An exhaustion accompanied by acute emotional pain results of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped. Learning to recognize it and to manage its symptoms is the first step toward healing. Compassion is an important care index and a professionalism marker.

There is a lack of validated tools to measure fatigue in patients with inflammatory skin, neuropsychiatric, and medical disorders. The use of nonvalidated tools may compromise the quality of data. The purpose of this meta-review was to evaluate existing fatigue scales commonly used to assess fatigue in other inflammatory conditions and to identify if there are scales that have been validated in dermatologic conditions. The PubMed/MEDLINE and SCOPUS databases were systematically searched from inception through March 10, 2020, in accordance with the PRISMA statement. Validated tools were identif…

BACKGROUND: Vibration is commonly used to relax tension in the limb and truck muscle. Vibration used directly on the muscle concerned and vertical vibration used on the whole-body through a foot platform have been reported in the literature to be useful to release muscle tension.
AIM: The present study investigated the effect of indirect whole-body vibration (WBV) and direct localized perilaryngeal vibration (LPV) on the phonatory functions of nondysphonic individuals with vocal fatigue.
METHODS: Forty-four subjects (mean age = 21.67 years) with normal voice, were randomly assigned to either…

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare lysosomal storage disease caused by deficiency in the enzyme beta-glucocerebrosidase. Along with visceral, hematologic, and bone manifestations, patients may experience chronic fatigue resulting in functional disability and reduced quality of life. Management of the disease includes therapeutic intervention, supportive therapies, and regular monitoring of all clinically relevant disease signs and symptoms. However, current practice guidelines do not include measurement of fatigue or therapeutic goals for fatigue.
OBJECTIVE: To provide insight regardi…

Patients with OCD are impaired in multiple domains of functioning and quality of life. While associated psychopathology complaints and neuropsychological deficits were reported, the subjective experience of general fatigue and mental fatigue was scarcely investigated. In this single-center case-control study we compared 50 non-depressed OCD outpatients consecutively recruited and 50 panic disorder (PD) outpatients, to determine whether they experienced fatigue differently. Assessment consisted of structured clinical interview for DSM-IV criteria by using the SCID-I and the SCID-II. Symptom sev…

Cancer-related fatigue is defined as a distressing, persistent, subjective sense of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion related to cancer or cancer treatment that is not proportional to recent activity and interferes with usual functioning. It is one of the most common side effects in patients with cancer. Fatigue has been shown to be a consequence of active treatment, but it may also persist into posttreatment periods. Furthermore, difficulties in end-of-life care can be compounded by fatigue. The NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines) for Ca…

Muscular fatigue can be defined as the failure to maintain an expected power output. It is a multifaceted phenomenon that incorporates metabolic, neural and neuromuscular components, among others. Metabolic causes of fatigue are associated with the ability to maintain energy supply during exercise, the speed at which homeostasis is achieved post-exercise, and the effects of high intensity exercise by-products on the peripheral neuromuscular system. Research has indicated that the central nervous system plays a protective role in preventing catastrophic muscle damage by reducing the intensity a…

The diagnosis chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was conceptualized in the mid-1980s. It is a clinically defined condition characterized by severe and disabling new onset fatigue with at least four additional symptoms: impaired memory or concentration, sore throat, tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi-joint pain, new headaches, unrefreshing sleep or post-exertion malaise. Chronic fatigue syndrome in adolescents is a rare condition compared to symptomatic fatigue. The estimated prevalence of adolescent CFS ranges between 0.11 and 1.29 % in Dutch, British, and US populations. …

Fatigue, a highly debilitating symptom, is reported in most patients with immune-mediated neuropathies, particularly in Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic immune-mediated demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance related polyneuropathy, and multifocal motor neuropathy. Aspects like the degree of known fatigue in these disorders, its impact on daily functioning and quality of life, the suggested underlying mechanisms, and possible therapeutic interventions for fatigue will be addressed in this review.

Motor neuron diseases as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome are characterized by prominent muscular weakness and severe motor disability. The prevalence of fatigue in motor neuron diseases is remarkably high, and may contribute significantly to patients' disability and a poor quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, fatigue is an understudied clinical problem in motor neuron diseases and is often overlooked. The present review will attempt to explain the pathogenic mechanisms of muscle fatigue in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome, to cover the variou…

In the Netherlands, more than 4000 patient cases of acute Q fever have been reported since 2007. Approximately 20% of these patients subsequently developed long-term fatigue. Such fatigue, as well as other physical symptoms and patient-perceived limitations in social functioning, have been compiled into what is known as the Q fever fatigue syndrome (QFS). The number of Dutch patients having QFS is expected to increase over the next years. The chance of a spontaneous recovery during the first six months following an acute Q fever infection is high. Allowing the fatigue to run its natural course…
