The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of partially replacing soybean meal with agricultural by-products with or without supplementation of dried black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal on meat quality, intestinal microbiota of commercial broiler chickens, and environmental sustainability. A total of 252 day-old Cobb 500 chicks were divided into three dietary treatments, including a corn-soybean-based Control diet and two alternative diets. Alternative diets were a diet in which soybean meal was replaced partly (SPR) by sunflower meal, brewers dried grain, and wheat middlings, and a diet

OBJECTIVE: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe pulmonary condition characterized by inflammation and lung damage, frequently resulting in poor clinical outcomes. Recent studies suggest that the gut-lung axis, mediated by gut microbiota, is critical in ARDS progression. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in an ARDS rat model (n = 6).
INTRODUCTION: The pathogenesis of ARDS involves complex interactions between the lungs and gut, with microbiota playing a key role. Understanding the effects of FMT on lung function and gu

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Stercoral colitis is an urgent complication of fecal impaction that requires aggressive management. The rare complicated with bowel ischemia requires a high index of suspicion for early diagnosis. This case report describes the detection and management of this rare and fatal complication of stercoral colitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man presented after 3 days of obstipation. Abdominal plain radiography revealed several air-fluid levels in the colon with centralized small bowel gas. Computed tomography revealed fecal impaction and stercoral colitis withou…

INTRODUCTION: Stercoral colitis (SC) is a rare but life-threatening inflammatory condition resulting from fecal impaction. Although typically presenting with abdominal complaints, atypical extra-abdominal manifestations may occur. This case report describes an unusual presentation of SC complicated by acute hypoxic respiratory failure due to fecal aspiration, underscoring the diagnostic challenges and importance of early recognition.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man with a history of chronic opioid use and longstanding constipation presented with generalized weakness, lethargy, and respir…

We summarize the prevalence and causes of constipation and incontinence in an elderly, drawing particular attention to the roles of immobility, dietary fiber, and dehydration. The physiology of fecal impaction is described in detail, and neurological and mechanical causes (rectal prolapse, rectocele, and hemorrhoids) of constipation are discussed. Consideration is also given to constipation associated with diverticular disease and ulcerative colitis. We also discuss the pathogenesis of fecal incontinence in the elderly, paying particular attention to fecal impaction and neurological causes tha…

Constipation and fecal impaction are common issues with the potential for significant morbidity in older people presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). While many of these patients present with classical symptoms of constipation or fecal impaction, atypical presentations are also frequent. These atypical presentations may include paradoxical diarrhea, fecal incontinence, urinary retention or overflow incontinence, hyperactive or hypoactive delirium, anorexia/dysphagia, and syncope. In addition, various clinical conditions (such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, dehydration, and hypothyroi…

Colorectal fecaloma is hardening of feces into lumps of varying size that is much harder in consistency than a fecal impaction. Complications of colorectal fecaloma include ulceration, bleeding, perforation and obstruction of the colon. Most fecalomas are successfully removed by conservative treatment with laxatives, enemas and rectal evacuation to relieve fecal impaction. When conservative treatments have failed, a surgical intervention may be needed. Herein, we report a case of 4.7 cm sized sigmoid fecaloma showing no response to conservative treatments that was successfully removed by endos…

The high nutritional and nutraceutical qualities of emmer wheat make it a valuable cereal grain. The present study was designed to quantify the contribution of emmer wheat inclusion into Japanese quail's rations in terms of their productive responses, alterations in the fatty acid profile of their meat, and changes in the composition of volatile fatty acids in their feces. For this purpose, a total of 160, 1-day-old Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments (4 replicates and 10 quails/replicate) with different levels of emmer wheat including

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate secondary operations using a posterior sagittal approach in patients with fecal incontinence and impaction after primary repair of anorectal malformations.
METHODS: Twenty patients (14 boys, 6 girls) who had previous failed surgery for imperforate anus underwent secondary operations. The indications for surgery included fecal incontinence (n = 16) and fecal impaction (n = 4). Patients ranged in age from 2 to 30 years (mean, 11 years), with 4 over the age of 20 years. The primary procedures included abdominosacroperineal (n = 7), sacroperineal (n …

Chronic constipation can lead to fecal impaction and catastrophic complication such as colonic obstruction, perforation and fecal peritonitis. A case is reported of stercoral perforation of the rectosigmoid with pneumoperitoneum and fecal peritonitis. The patient was admitted for the signs of acute abdomen with pneumoperitoneum diagnosed on native radiological imaging.

It is important for primary care physicians to take fecal incontinence seriously and not dismiss it as a normal part of aging. Elderly patients may be reluctant to admit fecal incontinence, so clinicians need to ask about it. Two of the most common causes are fecal impaction (especially in nursing home patients) and rectosphincter dysfunction in people with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonographic assessment of stool retention in children with chronic constipation requires the diagnosis of megarectum.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate an atypical method of US assessment of megarectum, fecal impaction and enlarged colon in order to decide whether it can be used as an assessment method for children with functional chronic constipation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 children with a positive diagnosis of chronic constipation were included in the study. All patients fulfilled the ROME II diagnostic criteria for defecation disorders. The co…

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of fecal incontinence from fecal impaction and rectal distension is poorly understood. We hypothesize that fecal impaction elicits up-regulation of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-activated mucosal chloride channel.
METHODS: The anus was ligated to produce 75% stenosis in rats. Controls received ligation without inducing stenosis. 24 to 48 hours after ligation the colon was removed. Mucosal short-circuit current was measured by Ussing chamber. Western blot analysis was used to detect CFTR expression in the colonic mucosa. Liga…

In epidermolysis bullosa (EB), chronic constipation, painful defecation, and fecal impaction frequently contribute to malnutrition and growth failure. Standard treatments for constipation, such as increased intake of conventional dietary fiber and fluids and/or the use of laxatives and stool softeners, are largely unsuccessful. We evaluated by questionnaire the use of a fiber-containing liquid formula (Enrich) in 20 chronically constipated children with dystrophic EB. All derived substantial improvement in constipation when taking 250 to 750 ml Enrich per day. We recommend that such a fiber-co…

INTRODUCTION: Stercoral perforation of the colon is a rare and life-threatening condition caused by pressure necrosis due to fecal impaction. It is commonly associated with chronic constipation, particularly in patients with neurogenic bowel disorders or prolonged opioid use. However, its occurrence in the context of chronic heroin use is rarely reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 40-year-old male with a 5-year history of heroin abuse who presented with diffuse abdominal pain, vomiting, and cessation of gas and stool passage for 10 days. Physical examination revealed a disten…
