Body as a Battlefield: Lived Experiences of Violence Against Women During Floods in Assam, India.

This study examines the lived experiences of violence against women belonging to low socioeconomic status (SES) in the context of floods in Assam. It analyzes how women are exposed to varying levels of susceptibility exclusively due to their gender roles and norms. The article presents a qualitative analysis of the data collected through semistructured interviews of 96 participants with the victims of different forms of violence. The analysis shows and discusses the participants' experiences of being a woman, particularly those with a low SES, who faces more vulnerabilities and a significant i…

Leptospirosis? An epidemiologic investigation following the historic 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

In May 2024, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced an historic flood that affected millions of people. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by the record-breaking flood waters, exposing them to water-borne pathogens, including leptospirosis. With concern for an outbreak, local efforts focused on identifying and treating any potential cases of leptospirosis. Using data from a local database for people presenting with signs and symptoms compatible with leptospirosis, we conducted a retrospective-prospective cohort study to estimate the incidence of confirmed cases. Of 53

Learned Helplessness, Psychological Wellbeing, and Proenvironment Care Behavior among Victims of Frequent Floods in Kerala.

Background  In 2018 and 2019, there were floods in the coastal regions of Kerala. Many individuals and families were victims on both these occasions; these floods had devastating impact on individual psychological wellbeing, their financial stability, and on overall family wellbeing. Furthermore, many people in vulnerable geographical areas still live in uncertainty and fear. In this context, our study examined whether continuous victimization of natural calamities, like floods in Kerala, leads to the development of learned helplessness and decreased psychological wellbeing among those affecte…

The Use of Chemoprophylaxis after Floods to Reduce the Occurrence and Impact of Leptospirosis Outbreaks.

Record-breaking and devastating rainfall events have occurred in the past decade. Rain and floods are considered the main risk factors for leptospirosis and several outbreaks have been reported following extreme weather events. In such situations, one possible intervention to prevent leptospirosis cases in high-risk groups is the use of chemoprophylaxis. However, not enough evidence of its effect is available. The objectives of this study were to review the literature on the current practices of chemoprophylaxis for leptospirosis and to explore, using a mathematical model, how various chemopro…

The Port Alfred floods of 17-23 October 2012: A case of disaster (mis)management?

An intense cut-off low weather system, more commonly known regionally as a 'black south-easter', caused severe flooding in Port Alfred and the surrounding coastal areas from 17 to 23 October 2012. Unconfirmed reports of up to 700 mm of rainfall for the period were recorded. Damage caused by the flooding was estimated at R500 million. Eight deaths were recorded. The poorly maintained and ageing infrastructure and storm water systems could not withstand the floodwaters, and as a result, damage was worse than it should have been. Many houses, particularly in the surrounding townships and informal

Force analysis and visualization of NAPL removal during surfactant-related floods in a porous medium.

Governing mechanisms of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) removal during surfactant and surfactant-foam (SF) flooding were studied by porous-patterned glass model experiments. Physical forces, viscous forces and capillary forces, acting on trichloroethylene (TCE) blobs were quantified to understand DNAPL removal mechanisms during the floods, simultaneously visualizing the removal mechanisms. The viscous force of the remedial fluid was intimately related to TCE removal from the porous medium. The remedial fluid with a high viscous force displaced more TCE blobs. Displacement of residual TC…

The One-Sided Flood: A Case of Unilateral Pulmonary Edema.

Unilateral pulmonary edema (UPE) is an uncommon clinical presentation, accounting for approximately 2% of cardiogenic pulmonary edema cases, and often mimics pulmonary infections, leading to diagnostic delays. We report the case of a 51-year-old woman with rheumatic heart disease who presented with progressive dyspnea and pedal edema. Clinical findings suggested pulmonary edema, but chest radiography revealed predominantly left-sided congestion. Point-of-care ultrasound demonstrated a unilateral B-profile, and bedside transthoracic echocardiography identified severe mitral regurgitation with a

[Tips for schistosomiasis prevention and control during the flood season].

Flood disasters frequently occur in schistosomiasis-endemic regions of China during the flood season, which causes a high risk of schistosomiasis transmission. Therefore, it is particularly crucial to control schistosomiasis transmission during the flood season. Based on field schistosomiasis control needs, this article proposes scientifical and operational countermeasures during three phases of pre-flood preparation, response to flood disasters, and post-flood management, and emphasizes multi-faceted interventions as responses to the risk of Oncomelania hupensis spread and schistosomiasis tra

Extreme flood and WNV transmission in Thessaly, Greece, 2023.

Storm Daniel, the deadliest Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone, caused significant flooding in Thessaly Region, Greece, from September 4 to 7, 2023. This study examines the potential impact of such extreme weather events on vector-borne disease transmission by assessing changes in mosquito populations and West Nile virus (WNV) circulation before and after the flood in two regional units of Thessaly. Systematic monitoring data on mosquito larvae and adults, along with WNV circulation in mosquitoes and humans from 2021 to 2023, were analyzed using a weekly interrupted time series regression des

Flood impacts on urban road connectivity in southern China.

Effective measures to improve road accessibility during storms are required as traffic congestion caused by storm floods increasingly constrains the efficiency of urban commuting. However, flood impacts on urban road connectivity are not yet well assessed due to inaccurate simulation of flood processes in urban areas where high-resolution data for drainage networks and gauged hydrological data are insufficient. Thus, this study assesses flood impacts on road network connectivity in an urban area of southern China through joint modeling of 1-D hydrodynamic processes in drainage networks and 2-D…

From the One Health Perspective: Schistosomiasis Japonica and Flooding.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease distributed worldwide, while schistosomiasis japonica localizes in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and a few regions of Indonesia. Although significant achievements have been obtained in these endemic countries, great challenges still exist to reach the elimination of schistosomiasis japonica, as the occurrence of flooding can lead to several adverse consequences on the prevalence of schistosomiasis. This review summarizes the influence of flooding on the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica and interventions responding to

Leptospirosis following a major flood in Central Queensland, Australia.

Throughout December 2010 and January 2011, Queensland experienced widespread flooding due to unusually protracted and heavy rainfalls. In mid-January 2011, four individuals from a small community in Central Queensland were hospitalized with leptospirosis. A further five cases were subsequently identified from around Central Queensland, bringing the total to nine. Microscopic agglutination testing found that serovar Arborea (Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Arborea) was presumptively responsible for leptospirosis in seven of nine confirmed cases. Serovars Hardjo and Australis were identified i

'Flooding' of the lungs and severe dyspnea in a patient with bronchoalveolar carcinoma.

In this case report, we describe a patient with bronchoalveolar carcinoma that experienced severe bronchorrhea and dyspnea after inhalation of N-acetylcysteine. The adverse reactions occurred both after oral and nebulized administration of N-acetylcysteine, resulting in severe dyspnea and the feeling of 'drowning'. Bronchorrhea has previously been reported as an uncommon but serious complication of bronchoalveolar carcinoma. We strongly suspect the administration of N-acetylcysteine to be implicated, as the complications occurred immediately after administration of this drug. As the patient su

Climate change, flooding, urbanisation and leptospirosis: fuelling the fire?

Flooding and heavy rainfall have been associated with numerous outbreaks of leptospirosis around the world. With global climate change, extreme weather events such as cyclones and floods are expected to occur with increasing frequency and greater intensity and may potentially result in an upsurge in the disease incidence as well as the magnitude of leptospirosis outbreaks. In this paper, we examine mechanisms by which climate change can affect various ecological factors that are likely to drive an increase in the overall incidence as well as the frequency of outbreaks of leptospirosis. We will…

Prevention, adaptation, and threat denial: flooding experiences in the Netherlands.

Delta areas such as the Netherlands are more and more at risk of future flooding due to global climate change. Motivating residents living in flood-prone areas to effectively cope with local floods may lead to minimization of material losses and loss of life. The aim of this research was to investigate whether the extent to which residents had been exposed to flooding in the past was a key factor in motivating residents to effectively cope with future flooding. We also focused on the psychological variables that mediated this relationship. We conducted a survey (N = 516) among flood victims an…
