Repair of a large congenital frontal bone defect with autologous exchange cranioplasty.

The authors report the case of a large idiopathic frontal bone defect and concomitant sagittal synostosis corrected by autologous exchange cranioplasty by using a corticocancellous bone graft and cranial vault expansion. An otherwise healthy, developmentally normal 6-year-old girl presented to our clinic with a large frontal bone defect. The osseous defect was midline and inferior to the coronal sutures, and the underlying dura was slightly tense. She had no signs or symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, and her head circumference and cephalic index were normal. Imaging demonstrated fus…

Textiloma of the frontal bone twenty years after craniotomy for Apert syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The presence of intracranial foreign body granulomas is an unusual condition. They can be caused by foreign substances which a … an infection. RESULTS: Surgical exploration of the region demonstrated the presence of gauze, in a frontal bone defect, surrounded by large masses of reactive granular tissue which were extended to the underlying dura mater. The symptoms resolved completely after the foreign body's retrieval. CONCLUSION: Foreign body granulomas, although rare, must always be …

The facial-bone fractures among fatally injured car occupants in frontal collisions.

The retrospective study was performed of all deceased car-occupants in frontal car collisions in order to identify persons with facial-bone fractures. The sample consisted of 482 cases: 378 males and 104 females, average age of 39.59+/-16.01 years. There were 239 car-drivers, 194 front-seat passengers, and 49 rear-seat passengers. In 46 of 482 cases, single fracture of upper facial bones was established: nasal fractures were the most common, followed by zygomatic. In 118 of 482 cases, fracture of upper facial bones was established, as well as 70 cases of jawbone. The fractured facial bones eit

Pericranial wrapping of the frontal bone after anterior skull base tumor resection.

BACKGROUND: Classic craniofacial resection and the subcranial approach are well-established techniques for the removal of tumors involving the anterior skull base. These techniques require frontal craniotomy to allow broad exposure of the anterior cranial fossa, a procedure that may be further complicated by local infection and osteomyelitis or because of a reduction in tissue perfusion and direct communication between the osteotomy and the contaminated nasoethmoidal cavity. The authors present a new method for wrapping of the frontal bone segment with a pericranial flap with the intention of …

CNS manifestations of Nasu-Hakola disease: a frontal dementia with bone cysts.

BACKGROUND: Nasu-Hakola disease or polycystic lipomembranous osteodysplasia with sclerosing leukoencephalopathy (PLOSL) is a genetically heterogeneous disease characterized by a combination of systemic bone cysts and dementia. OBJECTIVE: The authors present a neurologic, neuroradiologic, and neuropathologic analysis of a series of PLOSL patients in which the diagnosis has been confirmed by molecular genetic methods. METHODS: Clinical, neurophysiologic, and imaging follow-up data on eight patients as well as autopsy samples of three patients were analyzed in this study. All eight patients wer

A rare case of orbital tuberculosis with cold abscess and frontal bone lesion.

Tuberculosis is a multisystem infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and a leading infectious cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Orbital tuberculosis is a rare form of extra pulmonary tuberculosis, even in endemic areas. It may involve the soft tissue, lacrymal gland, periosteum, or bones of the orbital wall and can extend to adjacent paranasal sinuses or intracranial cavities. The delay in diagnosis can be due to the fact that the clinical signs simulate any inflammatory disease. The diagnosis is usually based on tissue examination in histopathological evidence prese

Management of frontal sinus fracture: reconstruction of the sinus with iliac bone graft.

One-third of frontal sinus fractures are isolated to the anterior table. Accurate reduction and stable fixation are important in the treatment of frontal sinus fracture. Traditional approaches to the reduction of an isolated anterior table fracture include the coronal incision, the bilateral brow incision, an endoscopic brow lift with an incision either directly over the fracture or in the brow, and delayed repair with a camouflaging implant. In our experience, autogenous bone graft is considered to be the best grafting material. It has the less short-term or long-term complications, and the d

The frontal bone in the genus Homo: a survey of functional and phylogenetic sources of variation.

The frontal bone is a useful aspect of the craniofacial skeleton to study in physical anthropology because it contains several characters considered to be important for both population- and species-level distinctions. These include forehead (frontal squama) inclination and supraorbital morphology. Because it lies at the interface between the anterior neurocranium and the upper face, it is also informative about the evolution of both of these regions of the skull. Previous research on frontal bone morphology can be grouped into two broad categories. One set of studies explored the relationship …

Clinical anatomy of the nasal process of the frontal bone (spina nasalis interna).

OBJECTIVES: During endonasal frontal sinusotomy with the sharp spoon, a solid piece of bone is frequently encountered anterior to the neo-ostium. This bone may be referred to as the nasal process of the frontal bone or internal nasal spine (spina nasalis interna). A prominent spina may render an extended sinusotomy difficult and may call for use of the drill. A series of anatomic measurements is presented to illustrate the 3-dimensional anatomy of the spina nasalis and the regional anatomy. METHODS: A maximum endonasal frontal sinusotomy (Draf type I-II procedure, nasofrontal approach type II…

[Multiple myeloma presenting as a mass lesion in the frontal bone. Case report].

The patient, a 51-year-old male, was hospitalized for evaluation of a frontal subcutaneous mass. There were no signs of intracranial hypertension and no neurological deficit. His general medical status was normal, but he had been diagnosed as having immunoglobulin G (IgG) lambda type multiple myeloma by bone marrow aspiration and immunoelectrophoresis. A plain skull X-ray showed a large bony defect and multiple punched-out lesions in the frontal bone. Computed tomography showed an epidural high-density mass with marked homogeneous enhancement. Carotid angiography showed a hypervascular tumor f…

Management of Frontal Bone Exposure Following Paramedian Forehead Flap for Nasal Reconstruction.

The paramedian forehead flap is renowned for its versatility and can cover a wide range of nasal defect sizes. Most of the literature discussing outcomes of paramedian forehead flap reconstructions focuses on morbidity at the recipient site. Frontal bone exposure resulting from the use of the paramedian forehead flap is a rare but possible complication, especially when periosteum overlying the bone is damaged during surgery or during healing by secondary intention due to desiccation. In this case, a 53-year-old female underwent nasal reconstruction with a paramedian forehead flap for an extens…

Outcomes of Open Fronto-Facial Resection for Fungal Osteomyelitis of Frontal Bone.

INTRODUCTION: The second wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to the resurgence of opportunistic infections due to the injudicious use of steroids. Sinonasal mucormycosis was declared an epidemic in India during the pandemic. Mucormycosis was managed effectively by surgical debridement along with systemic amphotericin B. Currently, a resurgence of mucormycosis following initial treatment, in the form of fungal osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, is being seen in India. METHODS: This prospective study included 10 patients with fungal osteomyelitis of the frontal bone due to mucormyco…

Frontal sinus ontogeny and covariation with bone structures in a modern human population.

In humans, the frontal sinus (FS) is located in the medial part of the supraorbital region, sometimes expanded throughout the frontal squama … on), even when age was held constant. Expansion of the FS at the frontal poles also correlated with frontal bone thickness. Despite the difficulty in modeling and predicting the trajectory and morphology of FS, our results suggest that it is affected by its surrounding bony environment.
