[Sepsis due to fusobacteria in a young adult].

Fusobacteria belong to the normal population of the pharyngeal mucosa as well as the mucosa of the upper airways and the gastrointestinal tract. Infections are comparatively rare. The most common causative organism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. A well-known infection caused by this germ is Lemierre's syndrome. In the presented case, a 19-year-old man (123 kg body weight, 186 cm body length) was found dead in his bed in the morning after having complained of muscular fatigue and vomiting the previous day. Autopsy was carried out only two days after death. At that time, the body showed marked pu

Gastric pH and Fusobacterium gastrosuis detection in relation to gastric lesions in fattening pigs.

The development of gastric ulcers in fattening pigs is a multifactorial process influenced by gastric acidity and bacterial colonization. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between gastric pH and the presence of Fusobacterium gastrosuis in different regions of the stomach in relation to ulcer formation. Gastric pH in the pars oesophagea was measured in 112 fattening pigs and showed a negative correlation with lesion severity. Qualitative real-time PCR detected F. gastrosuis in 70% of samples from the glandular region and in 50% of pars oesophagea samples, with detection

Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteremia involving multi-organ systems.

A 62-year-old African American man with a history of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the right hip joint presented with severe right hip pain, dyspnea, fever, tachycardia, and hypertension. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed bilateral airspace opacities with a mild tree-in-bud nodularity in the left lower lobe. Ultrasonography of the lower extremities revealed a deep venous thrombus (DVT) in the right deep veins. Blood cultures grew Fusobacterium necrophorum. CT and magnetic resonance imaging showed right hip joint destruction and septic arthritis. The patient had a complicated hospital course l

[A Case of Cerebellum Abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum that Developed Because of Poor Dental Hygiene].

We report a case of cerebellum abscess due to Fusobacterium nucleatum(F. nucleatum) in a 60-year-old man. He was admitted to our hospital complaining of headache and dizziness. On admission, he was lucid with the following vital data:blood pressure, 136/89 mmHg;heart rate, 65 beats/min;body temperature, 37.0℃;and oxygen saturation, 100%. He had a moderate headache and could not walk straight. In general, there were no abnormal findings except for his poor dental hygiene. Laboratory findings revealed elevated white blood cell counts(10,900/mm3)and brain MRI revealed a mass shadow that was suspe

Fusobacterium nucleatum Osteomyelitis in 3 Previously Healthy Children: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a rare cause of monomicrobial osteomyelitis in children. We describe the cases of 3 children with F. nucleatum osteomyelitis of the distal femoral epiphysis with concurrent septic arthritis and review 6 other cases reported in the literature. Our report emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion for anaerobic osteomyelitis, given its atypical presentation and the unique growth requirements of anaerobic bacteria.

Fusobacterium spondylodiscitis: case report and literature review.

Fusobacteria are obligate anaerobic bacilli residing in the oral cavity, female genital tract, and intestine. These pathogens are typical components of head, neck, and abdominal abscesses due to contiguous spread from adjacent mucosal surfaces. They are unusual etiologies, however, of bone and joint infections, particularly outside the cranial region. We report an unusual case of hematogenous lumbar spondylodiscitis caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum of suspected odontogenic origin.

Advanced Lemierre syndrome requiring surgery.

A 38-year-old homeless man was admitted with a 2-week history of a sore throat, increasing shortness of breath, and high fever. Clinical examination showed enlarged and tender submandibular and anterior cervical lymph nodes and a pronounced enlargement of the left peritonsillar region (Figure 1a). CT scan of the throat and the chest showed left peritonsillar abscess formation, occlusion of the left internal jugular vein with inflammatory wall thickening and perijugular soft tissue infiltration, pulmonary abscesses, and bilateral pleural effusions (Figures 1b-e, arrowed). Anaerobe blood culture

Thoracic vertebral actinomycosis: Actinomyces israelii and Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Actinomyces spp. are considered rare pathogens in today's medicine, especially with thoracic vertebral involvement. Classic actinomycosis (50%) presents as an oral-cervicofacial ("lumpy jaw") infection. This report describes a case of spinal cord compression caused by Actinomyces israelii with the coisolation of Fusobacterium nucleatum. There are limited numbers of similar cases.

Case report: necrotic glossitis and sinusitis in a cow caused apparently by a Fusobacterium necrophorum like microorganism.

An unusual case of necrotic infection of the tongue and unilateral necrotic maxillar sinusitis, in a cow is reported. The prominent clinical findings were: a marked salivation, unilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, diffuse necrotic lesions on the ventral side of the tongue and fetid breath. Clinico-pathological and pathological findings and abnormalities in the haemogram were probably caused by the toxins produced by the causative organism--Fusobacterium necrophorum like microorganism.

Fatal sepsis due to a beta-lactamase-producing strain of Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies polymorphum.

A patient with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia was treated empirically with imipenem for sepsis related to oropharyngeal infection and responded within 24 hours. When blood cultures yielded Streptococcus agalactiae, the regimen was changed to ampicillin and gentamicin. The patient's condition rapidly deteriorated, and she died 3 days later. After her death, a strain of Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies polymorphum producing beta-lactamase (PEN-Y; group 2a) was isolated from blood cultures. A literature review revealed increasingly frequent isolation of beta-lactamase-producing strains of F. n

Capnophilic and anaerobic bacteremia in neutropenic patients: an oral source.

The currently accepted empiric antibiotic therapy for bacterial infections in neutropenic patients may not cover the possibility of capnophilic and anaerobic bacteremia. Many of these infections develop in patients with severe mucositis or periodontitis, and the type of organisms recovered also suggests an oral source of infection. We present two cases of bacteremia in neutropenic patients who had been empirically treated with ceftazidime and piperacillin plus amikacin. In the first case a beta-lactamase-producing strain of Capnocytophaga ochracea was isolated; in the second case bacteremia wa

Unveiling the etiology of peritonsillar abscess using next generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is a severe deep neck space infection with an insufficiently characterized bacterial etiology. We aimed to reveal the bacteria associated with PTA applying next generation sequencing (NGS). Tonsil biopsies and pus samples of 91 PTA patients were analysed applying NGS method. RESULTS: Over 400 genera and 800 species belonging to 34 phyla were revealed. The most abundant species in both sample types were Streptococcus pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Fusobacterium nucleatum. When present, S. pyogenes was normally a predominant species, although it

Pediatric Septic Arthritis of the Knee due to Fusobacterium necrophorum in a Patient with Down Syndrome: A Case Report.

CASE: A 16-year-old boy with a history of Down syndrome presented with right knee pain and swelling. He was diagnosed with isolated septic arthritis of the knee due to Fusobacterium necrophorum in the absence of current or recent oropharyngeal infection. He was successfully treated with arthroscopic irrigation and debridement and 12 weeks of oral antibiotics. CONCLUSION: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a part of the normal oral flora and a rare cause of septic arthritis, typically associated with recent oropharyngeal infection. However, patients with immune dysregulation such as those with Down
