18-year-old man was found at the street in an unconsious state and brought to Department of Acute Poisonings with suspicion of unknown xenobiotic ingestion. There was no reliable informations concerning poisoning circumstances. On admission patient was confused and unable to answer questions; physical examination revealed symptoms resembling ethanol intoxication. Results of laboratory tests (e.g., ketonemia and lack of abnormalities of gasometric parameters; ethanol, methanol and ethylene glycol in blood and urine were absent) enabled to presume acute poisoning with isopropyl alcohol. We report a case of fatal acute butane poisoning in a woman in her 80 s, who was found in a bathtub filled with butane gas. Five artificially punctured liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cartridges were discovered within the bathtub. Forensic autopsy revealed no significant traumatic injuries or pathological findings sufficient to explain the cause of death. Toxicological analysis identified butane and diphenhydramine (DPH) in the blood, urine, and various organs. The peripheral blood concentrations of butane and DPH were 2.95 μ g/ml and 3.56 μ g/ml, respectively. While the DPH concentration was wi

The most common cause of death in fires is the inhalation of noxious gases rather than thermal injury. Hydrogen cyanide gas, the most toxic product of combustion, seldom is recognized as a significant hazard in smoke inhalation. During the first four months of 1986, toxic amounts of cyanide were found in four of the six fatalities from house fires in Akron, Ohio. These cases illustrate the increasing frequency of cyanide poisoning in household fires. Sources of cyanide toxicity include the increased use of synthetic polymers in building materials and furnishings. Prompt recognition of and ther

BACKGROUND: Poisonings with rodenticides containing hydrogen phosphide-releasing compounds may lead to deleterious organ dysfunction and death. Since data of hydrogen phosphide poisonings is limited to case reports/series, this study was intended to elucidate hydrogen phosphide poisonings based on a 20-year data collection.
METHODS: Explorative data analysis of the Poison Center Mainz database looking for route of exposure, symptoms, and severity using the Poisoning Severity Score.
RESULTS: From 1983-2003, 188 hydrogen phosphide poisonings were reported. Sixty-five percent of these were unin

Rice tablet, also known as aluminum phosphide (ALP), is a nonorganic material used as an insecticide and rodenticide in the storage and transportation of grains. Phosphine gas, released from the chemical material, in contact with humidity and weak acid, can induce poisoning and death. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of Echinophora cinerea leaves on ALP poisoning in heart in rats. In this study, factors such as blood pressure, heart rate, electrocardiography, and biochemical biomarkers of oxidative stress of cardiac tissue were evaluated. The use of Echinop

Acquired methemoglobinemia can rarely be caused by acute nitrobenzene poisoning, presenting as oxygen-unresponsive, life-threatening hypoxia. We discuss a case of a 19-year-old female who attempted suicide through intentional nitrobenzene poisoning. She presented to the emergency department with progressive cyanosis, severe abdominal pain, and dyspnea. Her symptoms were suggestive of methemoglobinemia, which was confirmed through arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, revealing a methemoglobin level of 37.5%. Treatment included intravenous methylene blue, vitamin C, and supportive care, leading to

Contamination of breathing gas is a risk for all divers. Some hydrocarbon contaminants will be sensed by the diver and the dive profile aborted. On the contrary, carbon monoxide may not be recognized by the diver and catastrophic consequences can result. Reported here is the fatal case of carbon monoxide poisoning while scuba diving, an event that has rarely been reported in the medical literature. A detailed review of other published cases of CO poisoning while scuba diving is included, attempting to identify causes in common and propose methods of prevention.

Efficient photoreduction of flue gas CO2 to high-value C2 products is challenging due to low CO2 concentrations, sluggish kinetics, and susceptibility to catalyst poisoning. To tackle this, CuNi/PCN photocatalysts with low-coordinated N3-Ni-Cu-N2 dual-atom active sites were synthesized by in-situ thermal polymerization method. The optimized catalyst drives CO2 photoreduction, with C2H6 formed as the major product at a rate of 254.3 μmol h-1 g-1 alongside CO and CH4. Notably, it retains ~50% yield with ~63% electron selectivity of C2H6 under 15% diluted CO2 and exhibits robust anti-poisoning ca

Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic gas-second only to carbon monoxide as a cause of inhalational deaths. Its mechanism of toxicity is only partially known, and no specific therapy exists for sulfide poisoning. We show in several cell types, including human inducible pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived neurons, that sulfide inhibited complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and induced apoptosis. Sulfide increased hydroxyl radical production in isolated mouse heart mitochondria and F2-isoprostanes in brains and hearts of mice. The vitamin B12 analog cobinamide reversed the cellular t

Two cases of fatal intoxications with toluene due to glue sniffing are described. In case 1, the autopsy did not indicate cause of death, while in case 2, the cause of death was determined to possibly be due to mechanical asphyxia by drowning. As the decedents had a history of glue sniffing, toxicological analyses were performed. Using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with headspace method, toluene was detected in biological samples. Toluene ranged from 3.81 to 20.97 μg/g, with the highest concentrations observed in liver and br

Poisoning with volatile substances remains exceptional. Authors report the case of a married couple who were found in a car with a butane gas bottle: the woman was dead and her husband alleged it was an unsuccessful suicide pact. A specific research of volatile substances on postmortem samples with headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry following a quantitative determination was performed. The n-butane concentrations detected were composed of 610 μg/L (cardiac blood), 50 μg/kg (brain), 134 μg/kg (lungs), 285 μg/kg (liver), and 4090 μg/kg (heart) and were compatible with the rare lethal

OBJECTIVE: Retrospective evaluation of the clinical course of carbamate poisoning in young children and adults.
DESIGN: Thirty-six children aged 1 to 8 years (median 2.5 years) and 24 adults aged 17 to 41 years (median 22 years) ingested rat poison resulting in carbamate poisoning. The ingested poisons in all cases were positively identified as methomyl or aldicarb by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
RESULTS: Symptoms of intoxication in children were compared to those in adults with similar depression of the serum cholinesterase. The predominant symptoms in young children were central n

Although less widespread than twenty years ago, inhalant abuse remains an on-going problem, whose incidence among U.S. teenagers and young adults ranges from 10 to 15%. Death due to the inhalation of vapor from halogenated hydrocarbons is a well-known phenomenon, yet few cases of fatal butane-gas poisoning have been described. Many cases of volatile substance abuse in prison populations have been reported: drug-addicted inmates often resort to this alternative practice when unable to get their habitual drugs of abuse. A similar pattern occurs especially among adolescents. The study herein desc…

Poisoning is one of the more conventional modes of suicide in some parts of India. Aluminium phosphide (ALP) is a chemical used for this purpose and manifests severe cardiovascular complications, such as hypotension, shock, various arrhythmias, congestive heart failure with toxic myocarditis, and in rare cases, ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction or other electrocardiogram changes. Upon contact with moisture, ALP yields phosphine gas, a toxic systemic poison found in pesticides that can lead to cardiovascular-related mortality. We present a case of ALP poisoning in a 60-year-old woman w

INTRODUCTION: Intentional pesticide poisoning is a major clinical and public health problem in agricultural communities in low and middle income countries like Nepal. Bans of highly hazardous pesticides (HHP) reduce the number of suicides. We aimed to identify these pesticides by reviewing data from major hospitals across the country and from forensic toxicology laboratories.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 10 hospitals for pesticide poisoned patients and two forensic laboratories of Nepal from April 2017 to February 2020. The poison was identified from the history, re

BACKGROUND: Delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy (DPHL) is a demyelinating syndrome that occurs days to weeks after the brain has recovered from a coma. It is caused by the period of hypoxia and is characterized by mental disorders, extrapyramidal system symptoms, and motor changes. Common causes include cardiogenic shock, severe anemia, massive blood loss, and poisoning. Poisoning, mostly resulting from intoxication with carbon monoxide and several narcotic drugs, has been reported to be a cause of DPHL. There are only a few reports of DPHL due to nitrite poisoning in literature. We repor

The salivary glands of marine carnivorous gastropods contain tetramines, which usually cause mild symptoms of poisoning. However, these symptoms may be fatal in rare cases. A 58-year-old woman with a history of myasthenia gravis complained of dyspnea after consuming marine carnivorous gastropods with intact salivary glands. Upon arrival at the hospital, her blood gas analysis revealed type II respiratory failure with a pCO2 of 154 mmHg. Tracheal intubation was immediately performed. Her respiratory condition improved the following day, and she therefore could be weaned off the ventilator. Tetr

Plasma levels of lactate and oxypurines markedly increased in both fed and fasted rats exposed to three acute anoxic states, cyanide poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning and inhalation of oxygen-deficient gas, suggesting that the transition of aerobic to anaerobic metabolism occurred similarly in both groups. Plasma glucose level of fed rats increased 1.8-2.5 times after exposure to anoxia, whereas a remarkable hypoglycemia was induced by the exposure of fasted rats to anoxia. Hepatic glycogen stores in fed rats induced hyperglycemia, while exhaustion of the stores in fasted rats resulted in s

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia (NH3-SCR) is an efficient NOx abatement strategy, but deNOx catalysts suffer from serious deactivation due to the coexistence of multiple poisoning substances such as K, SO2, etc. in the flue gas. It is essential to understand the interaction among various poisons and their effects on NOx abatement. Here, we unexpectedly identified the K migration behavior induced by SO2 over K-poisoned FeVO4/TiO2 catalysts, which led to alkali-poisoning buffering and activity recovery. It has been demonstrated that the K would occupy both redox and
