Modelling gesture use and early language development in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Nonverbal communication abilities, including gesture use, are impaired in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about how common gestures may influence or be influenced by other areas of development. AIMS: To examine the relationships between gesture, fine motor and language in young children with ASD compared with a comparison group using multiple measures and methods in a structural equation modelling framework. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Participants included 110 children with ASD and a non-ASD comparison group of 87 children (that included children with developm…

Gesture Performance in First- and Multiple-Episode Patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Gesturing plays an important role in social behavior and social learning. Deficits are frequent in schizophrenia and may contribute to impaired social functioning. Information about deficits during the course of the disease and presence of severity and patterns of impairment in first-episode patients is missing. Hence, we aimed to investigate gesturing in first- compared to multiple-episode schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. METHODS: In 14 first-episode patients, 14 multiple-episode patients and 16 healthy controls matched for age, gender and education, gesturing was

Spontaneous gesture and spatial language: Evidence from focal brain injury.

People often use spontaneous gestures when communicating spatial information. We investigated focal brain-injured individuals to test the hypotheses that (1) naming motion event components of manner-path (represented by verbs-prepositions in English) are impaired selectively, (2) gestures compensate for impaired naming. Patients with left or right hemisphere damage (LHD or RHD) and elderly control participants were asked to describe motion events (e.g., running across) depicted in brief videos. Damage to the left posterior middle frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and left anterior su…

A new way to quantify the fidelity of imitation: preliminary results with gesture sequences.

Imitation is a common and effective way for humans to learn new behaviors. Until now, the study of imitation has been hampered by the challenge of measuring how well an attempted imitation corresponds to its stimulus model. We describe a new method for quantifying the fidelity with which observers imitate complex series of gestures. Wearing a data glove that transduced movements of their digits, subjects viewed and then reproduced a sequence of gestures from memory. The velocity profile of each digit's flexion or extension was used to segment movements made during an imitation into gestures th…

Age, gesture span, and dissociations among component subsystems of working memory.

Working memory was examined in old and young adults using a series of span tasks, including the forward versions of the visual-spatial and digit span tasks from the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised, and comparable hand gesture and visual design span tasks. The observation that the young participants performed significantly better on all the tasks except digit span suggested that aging has an impact on some component subsystems of working memory but not others. Analyses of intercorrelations in span performance supports the dissociation among three component subsystems, one for auditory verbal info

Simultaneous and delayed matching to sample in gesture users and speakers with mental retardation.

Sixty-eight participants with severe mental retardation participated in a study of representational matching to sample. Participants were asked to match objects to identical objects, line drawings, miniature objects (icons), pantomimes, and spoken names. Participants who were successful in these matching tasks also experienced delayed matching tasks. Participants differed in their expressive communication and comparisons were made between symbolic (speaking) individuals, distal gesture users, and contact gesture users. Contact gesture users were significantly worse on identical matching to sam

[Characterization of gestural disorders in primary progressive apraxia: diagnostic and nosographic contribution].

Five cases are reported of patients with so-called primary progressive apraxia, defined as a slowly worsening disturbance of gestural abilities, without other major cognitive changes during a long period, in relation to degenerative cortical atrophy. All five cases, as other cases in the literature, share the following common features: 1) asymmetrical onset of upper limb clumsiness, more often involving the left side, later involving the contralateral side and lower limbs; 2) after a variable delay, the occurrence of symptoms suggesting subcortical involvement (akinesia, limb stiffness, variou

Apraxia Rehabilitation Using Gesture Training and Sequencing Tasks: A Case Report.

This case report describes the effects of combining gesture training and sequencing tasks to improve apraxia and enhance activities of daily living (ADLs) in a patient with left inferior parietal lobule and temporal lobe damage caused by a cardioembolic stroke. The intervention leveraged the patient's preserved semantic knowledge of tools. A male patient in his late 70s presented with significant impairments in gesture execution and action sequencing while retaining semantic knowledge of tool functions. Beginning on day 13 post-onset, the intervention included gesture training with photographs

Understanding the influence of confounding factors in myoelectric control for discrete gesture recognition.

Discrete myoelectric control-based gesture recognition has recently gained interest as a possible input modality for many emerging ubiquitous computing applications. Unlike the continuous control commonly employed in powered prostheses, discrete systems seek to recognize the dynamic sequences associated with gestures to generate event-based inputs. More akin to those used in general-purpose human-computer interaction, these could include, for example, a flick of the wrist to dismiss a phone call or a double tap of the index finger and thumb to silence an alarm. Moelectric control systems have …

Bioinspired Photoreceptors with Neural Network for Recognition and Classification of Sign Language Gesture.

This work addresses the design and implementation of a novel PhotoBiological Filter Classifier (PhBFC) to improve the accuracy of a static sign language translation system. The captured images are preprocessed by a contrast enhancement algorithm inspired by the capacity of retinal photoreceptor cells from mammals, which are responsible for capturing light and transforming it into electric signals that the brain can interpret as images. This sign translation system not only supports the effective communication between an agent and an operator but also between a community with hearing disabiliti

A Novel Magnetometer Array-based wearable system for ASL gesture recognition.

Hand gesture classification is of high importance in any sign language recognition (SLR) system, which is expected to assist individuals suffering from hearing and speech impairment. American sign language (ASL) comprises of static and dynamic gestures representing many alphabets, phrases, and words. ASL recognition system allows us to digitize communication and use it effectively within or outside the hearing-deprived community. Developing an ASL recognition system has been a challenge since some of the involved hand gestures closely resemble each other, and thereby it demands high discrimina…

Modeling one-handed grip strangulation: Intentionality of the gesture and age influence.

Strangulation is a violent act which can be lethal and is often studied in forensic context. The neck includes several anatomical elements that can evolve with aging. We therefore created a numerical human neck model including the main anatomical elements and simulated one-handed grip strangulation cases. In addition, we created 3 models each representing age groups: 20-30 years old, 30-50 years old and over 50 years old. The main changes between the different age groups are the ossification of the cartilages and the muscles mechanical properties. Several initial and boundary conditions have b

A Gesture-Controlled Rehabilitation Robot to Improve Engagement and Quantify Movement Performance.

Rehabilitation requires repetitive and coordinated movements for effective treatment, which are contingent on patient compliance and motivation. However, the monotony, intensity, and expense of most therapy routines do not promote engagement. Gesture-controlled rehabilitation has the potential to quantify performance and provide engaging, cost-effective treatment, leading to better compliance and mobility. We present the design and testing of a gesture-controlled rehabilitation robot (GC-Rebot) to assess its potential for monitoring user performance and providing entertainment while conducting

The relationship between limb apraxia and the spontaneous use of communicative gesture in aphasia.

This study investigated the relationship between limb apraxia, as assessed by a formal clinical test, and the production of spontaneous communicative gesture, as measured by a newly designed rating scale--the Nonvocal Communication Scale (NCS). Subjects were aphasic adult males with cerebrovascular lesions of the left hemisphere. The performance of aphasic patients on the praxis test and the NCS was independent of demographic, neuroanatomic, linguistic, or cognitive variables, except for global aphasics who were low-scoring across the board. There was a significant positive correlation, howeve

The Neurocognitive Bases of Meaningful Intransitive Gestures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Neuropsychological Studies.

Researchers and clinicians have long used meaningful intransitive (i.e., not tool-related; MFI) gestures to assess apraxia-a complex and frequent motor-cognitive disorder. Nevertheless, the neurocognitive bases of these gestures remain incompletely understood. Models of apraxia have assumed that meaningful intransitive gestures depend on either long-term memory (i.e., semantic memory and action lexicons) stored in the left hemisphere, or social cognition and the right hemisphere. This meta-analysis of 42 studies reports the performance of 2659 patients with either left or right hemisphere dama…

Co-speech gestures influence the magnitude and stability of articulatory movements: evidence for coupling-based enhancement.

Humans rarely speak without producing co-speech gestures of the hands, head, and other parts of the body. Co-speech gestures are also highly restricted in how they are timed with speech, typically synchronizing with prosodically-prominent syllables. What functional principles underlie this relationship? Here, we examine how the production of co-speech manual gestures influences spatiotemporal patterns of the oral articulators during speech production. We provide novel evidence that words uttered with accompanying co-speech gestures are produced with more extreme tongue and jaw displacement, an…

Multimodal training using pitch gestures improves Mandarin tone recognition in noise for children with cochlear implants.

The present study investigates whether incorporating manual pitch gestures into audiovisual training can enhance the recognition of Mandarin lexical tones in prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs). Building on prior research that demonstrated the benefits of hand gestures in second-language tone learning, the study hypothesized that multimodal training integrating pitch gestures would be more effective than auditory-visual training alone. Eighteen preschool-aged CI users (15 with bimodal hearing) were assigned in equal numbers to either: (1) an experimental group receiving com…
