Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and mania in an adolescent.

The case is presented of a twelve-year-old boy suffering simultaneously from Tourette Syndrome (TS) and a manic episode. The problems of this unique clinical association are discussed from the point of view of differential diagnosis, treatment, and possible biochemical basis. The case also illustrates the usefulness of the expanded concept of TS as a neuropsychiatric disorder with dysregulation of perceptual, motor, and cognitive functioning.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in mental handicap.

A case of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in a mildly mentally retarded adult female is described. The clinical features, natural history and response to treatment were typical of the condition but the association with mental retardation, epilepsy and psychotic phenomena were unusual.

Disorders of arousal in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Disorders of arousal (somnambulism and night terrors) were significantly more common among children with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (n = 57) than among children with seizure disorders (n = 58) or learning disabilities (n = 53). Neurohumoral disturbances may account for the differences.

Neuropsychological abnormalities in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Seven patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome underwent an extensive psychological and neuropsychological examination. On psychological examination, it was found that consistent with previous reports these patients had a high incidence of Verbal IQ-Performance IQ discrepancies on the Revised Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, and had average mental arithmetic but poor written arithmetic. On neuropsychological examination, no single measure was performed poorly by all subjects, but there was a high incidence of poor performance on several measures from the Halstead-Reitan Battery.

Developmental perspective of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

This paper concerned developmental perspectives of the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome. Topics addressed included birth, developmental and family histories, and symptom picture. The neglected area of academic achievement was examined. Results of the first systematic investigation of neuro-psychological functioning of Tourette children undertaken in the United States was presented. Subjects were 13 diagnosed male Tourette patients between 10 and 13 yr. of age. Parents completed the Developmental History and Tourette Syndrome Questionnaires while subjects were administered the WISC-R, Wide Range

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: case report.

An adult patient sought help because he was unable to stop making noises and movements which were antisocial. The grotesque complaint proved to be a case of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. Treatment with haloperidol produced a marked improvement in the symptoms, some of which are seldom reported.

Sensory experiences of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

A patient with a 62-year history of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome describes 35 years of self-observation of the subjective events that precede, accompany, and follow the occurrence of symptomatic movements and sounds. Bodily sites become sensitized, and the movements (however bizarre) are intentional acts aimed at satisfying and eliminating unfulfilled sensations and urges. Sensory impressions may be projected onto other persons, objects, or imagined objects; these phantom sensations also demand discharge through actions. With vigilance and self-observation, barely emergent sensations can be

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in Oriental children.

Seventy-four cases of tic syndromes were classified into four groups: chronic multiple tics, subacute multiple tics, chronic simple tics and transient simple tics, and 37 cases of chronic multiple tics (Tourette syndrome) were investigated. Clinical evaluation suggested that a transition existed between the four groups. Posture abnormalities were found in 27% of Tourette syndrome and a relation to dystonia was implied. Clinical evaluation and studies of catecholamine blockers' effectiveness suggested the validity of subtyping Tourette syndrome into four groups whose topographical or biochemica

Catecholamine metabolism in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Abnormal central catecholamine neurotransmission has been suggested in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. The authors evaluated the sympathetic nervous system in both the basal state and in its responsivity to postural and exercise stress. Plasma norepinephrine and the activities of its synthetic and degradative enzymes were not different in 33 Tourette patients, a control group of unaffected relatives, and another control group of unrelated healthy volunteers. This finding suggests that these patients have neither a generalized dysfunction of norepinephrine metabolism nor a defect in the centr

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome: biochemical approaches.

Haloperidol, a dopamine receptor blocking agent, is the most effective therapy for Tourette's syndrome. In five patients with Tourette's syndrome, we found in the CSF an elevated probenecid-induced accumulation of HVA, the major metabolite of dopamine. This supports the hypothesis that Tourette symptoms are related to an increased firing of dopaminergic neurons in the central nervous system; haloperidol relieves these symptoms by blocking dopamine receptors. Some similarities of Tourette's syndrome to Lesch-Nyhan's syndrome prompted us to compare these two disorders, obtaining data from a larg

Six cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Six cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome are discussed in the light of conflicting views on the aetiology of the condition. It is hypothesized that the onset of coprolalia in patients with persistent childhood tics indicates a disturbances of the normal balance between a need for tension relief by swearing and a capacity to control such vocal activity. Some conclusions are drawn on the management of the syndrome by the use of butyrophenones, massed practice of tics, and the promotion of personality development. A flexible approach geared to the individual patient's particular needs is rec
