Modified two-stage procedures for the treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: Unfavorable conditions at the soft tissues adjacent to a recession defect may preclude performing pedicle flaps (advanced or rot … etic outcomes, and reducing patient morbidity. METHOD: In the first case report, a Miller class II gingival recession, associated with a deep buccal probing depth, affecting a lower central incisor was treated. In the first step of the surgery an epithelized graft with an apical-coronal dimension equal to the keratinized tissue height of the adjacent teeth was sutu …

Prevalence and associated factors of gingival recession in Greek adults.

AIM: The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to estimate gingival recession (GR) prevalence and associated risk factors in young Greek adults. METHODS: The study population consisted of 420 young adults (200 males and 220 females). All individuals were clinically examined and answered questions regarding their smoking status, educational level, and oral hygiene practices. In addition, the association between GR and the following aspects was assessed: sex, smoking status, educational level, plaque index, gingival index, calculus presence, and plaque control methods. Statistical analys…

Classification of dental surface defects in areas of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: A clinical classification of surface defects in gingival recession area is proposed. METHODS: Two factors were evaluated to set up a classification system: presence (A) or absence (B) of cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and presence (+) or absence (-) of dental surface discrepancy caused by abrasion (step). Four classes (A+, A-, B+, and B-) were identified on the basis of these variables. To validate the classification three different calibrated examiners applied the proposed classification system to 46 gingival recessions and kappa statistics were performed. The classification was u…

Gingival recession, oral hygiene and associated factors among Tanzanian women.

BACKGROUND: Females are generally more motivated with regard to oral hygiene practices and thus brush their teeth more frequently than males. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of gingival recession, oral hygiene status, oral hygiene practices and associated factors in women attending a maternity ward in Tanzania. DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study. SETTING: Maternity ward of Muhimbili National Hospital, Tanzania. SUBJECTS: Four hundred and forty six women were interviewed on oral hygiene practices and maternal factors, and a full-mouth examination was done to determine the pres…

No good evidence to link toothbrushing trauma to gingival recession.

DATA SOURCES: Medline, Embase, Web of Knowledge, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Current Contents Connect and the Google … ional studies, two concluded there was no apparent relationship between toothbrushing frequency and gingival recession. Eight studies reported a positive association between toothbrushing frequency and recession. Other potential risk factors were duration of toothbrushing, brushing force, and frequency of changing the toothbrush, brush (bristle) hardness and toothbr …

Treatment of gingival recession by modified Langer and Langer technique.

In recent years, stronger need for esthetics and growing cosmetic demand for a pleasing smile has made many individuals more conscious of the recession on facial aspect of the teeth. Here we report a case illustrating treatment for facial gingival recession using modified Langer and Langer technique. The clinical results showed good soft tissue coverage of the root surfaces and improving esthetics.

[Surgical methods used in the treatment of local gingival recession].

Surgical methods used for repair of gingival recession are reviewed. Modern methods and means of plastic periodontal surgery solve many esthetic problems. The prognosis of the results of gingival plasty in cases of recession of different classes is now becoming more and more favorable. The method of purposeful tissue regeneration is a good supplement to surgical treatment of gingival recession.

Comparison of 2 clinical techniques for treatment of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: In early case studies, use of a collagen barrier as a guided tissue regeneration (GTR) material has shown particular promise in … oot coverage/recession treatment. METHODS: Sixteen patients with bilateral Miller's Class I or II (gingival recession > or = 3.0 mm) recession defects were treated either with SCTG or GTRC using a newly designed collagen membrane. Clinical parameters monitored included recession depth (RD), clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), width of keratinized g …

Gingival recession related to removable partial dentures in older patients.

One hundred forty-six patients, living in the community and attending a general dental practice, were examined on two occasions separated by 3 years to determine relationships among removable partial dentures, their design, and gingival recession. This study confirmed the relationship between the presence of a partial denture and an increase of gingival recession, but was unable to demonstrate any predictable relationship to the lack of tooth support, the material used for the dentures, or covering the gingival margins with lingual plates. These design factors may be less important than the ma…

The subepithelial connective tissue graft for treatment of gingival recession.

A technique has been described for areas of single or multiple root coverage, especially in the maxilla, for coverage of existing crown margins, and for areas requiring a combination of ridge augmentation and root coverage. The success of the subepithelial connective tissue graft is attributed to the double blood supply at the recipient site from the underlying connective tissue base and the overlying recipient flap. The donor site is a closed wound, which produces less postoperative discomfort. In addition, an excellent color blend can be achieved.

Anterior open bite and gingival recession in children and adolescents.

Gingival recession is a manifestation of periodontal breakdown. Plaque microorganisms are the primary aetiological factor, but other secondary conditions are also associated with its presence. This study examined the hypothesis that localized gingival recession is more prevalent in open-bite cases. The study included 26 children with untreated anterior open bite and a matched control group. Clinical crown length, recession depth, oral habits and periodontal indices were recorded for each individual. Although the plaque index was not significantly different between the two groups, the open-bite…

[Methods for mucogingival surgery and its results in gingival recession].

Muco-periosteal pedicle flaps, free mucosal transplants as well as a combination of these two methods may be used for treating gingival recessions. The method selected and the therapeutical success depend on whether or not the interdental gingiva is also affected. From this viewpoint, three different types of recessions can be distinguished. Type I recessions with intact interdental gingiva on both sides can successfully be treated by all methods. In type II recessions with partial loss of the interdental gingiva on one side, free transplants as well as their combination with sliding flaps sho…

Prevalence of gingival recession in university students: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the prevalence, extent, severity, and distribution of gingival recession (GR) among university students. Recognizing that GR rep-resents a significant periodontal concern with aesthetic and functional consequences, this review focuses on a young demographic that is underrepresented in epidemiological surveys. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines and a pre-registered protocol, a structured search strategy was designed and executed across PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and EBSCO databa-ses, targeting studies pub…

Success in Gingival Recession Coverage: Prognostic Indicators From Private Practice.

PURPOSE: To identify parameters associated with successful root coverage, defined as 70% and 50% root coverage in Miller Class I-II/RT1 and III/RT2 defects, respectively, within periodontal office settings. METHODS: Dental records of patients treated for gingival recessions were screened retrospectively. General health parameters, smoking status, pre and posttreatment recession depth (RD), that is, RD and residual RD (RRD), respectively, recession width (RW), keratinized tissue (KT) width, and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were extracted. Logistic regression linear mixed-effects models were …
