PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The genetic basis of primary angle closure (PAC) glaucoma is slowly being elucidated. In recent years, genome-wide association studies have identified eight new susceptibility loci for PAC. Our purpose in this review is to summarize our current knowledge of genetics in angle closure, to take a closer look at the eight novel loci and what we have learned about their function, and consider what they might teach us about angle closure disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple novel loci associated with PAC glaucoma have been identified in large genome-wide association studies. Moreov

Current estimates suggest 50% of glaucoma blindness worldwide is caused by primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) but the causative gene is not known. We used genetic linkage and whole genome sequencing to identify Spermatogenesis Associated Protein 13, SPATA13 (NM_001166271; NP_001159743, SPATA13 isoform I), also known as ASEF2 (Adenomatous polyposis coli-stimulated guanine nucleotide exchange factor 2), as the causal gene for PACG in a large seven-generation white British family showing variable expression and incomplete penetrance. The 9 bp deletion, c.1432_1440del; p.478_480del was present

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency-dependent spontaneous neural activity in primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) method.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, 52 PACG individuals (24 males and 28 females) and 52 normal-sighted controls (NS; 24 males and 28 females) who were closely matched in age, sex, and education underwent resting-state magnetic resonance imaging scans. A repeated-measures ANOVA and post hoc two-sample t-tests were conducted to analyze the different ALFF values in two different frequency bands

PURPOSE: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is associated with increased intraocular pressure, optic nerve damage, and progressive vision loss, but the molecular mechanism that underpins retinal ganglion neuropathy in PACG remains poorly understood. To better understand the pathogenesis of human PACG, we performed the first comprehensive proteomic analysis of aqueous humor (AH) samples from PACG patients and matched control donors to study pathogenic alteration in AH composition in disease.
METHODS: High-resolution, label-free, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-based quantitat

PURPOSE: To review the old and existing classification systems for primary angle closure disease.
METHODS: Literature review and new proposed classification system.
RESULTS: Existing classification systems have several shortcomings which cannot be applied in a clinical setting. This can be addressed by a proposed scoring system.
CONCLUSION: A scoring system would be most appropriate for any clinical setting as well as for prognosticating primary angle closure disease.

A 56-year-old woman with a history of primary angle-closure glaucoma presented with acute generalised swelling, and facial angioedema following a fish meal. She complained of nausea, vomiting, headache, pain in both eyes and acute loss of vision. Her visual acuity was reduced and intraocular pressures (IOP) were elevated. Gonioscopy revealed complete angle closure in the left eye and complete to partial closure in the right eye. Through existing peripheral iridotomies the anterior capsules were seen pressed up against the iris of both eyes. A diagnosis of angle-closure glaucoma was made, medic

This paper describes a topiramate induced acute bilateral angle-closure glaucoma. This rare adverse effect is an idiosyncratic reaction characterized by uveal effusion and lens forward displacement, leading to increased intraocular pressure and vision loss. We describe a 55 year-old white woman with migraine, spasmodic torticollis and essential tremor, who developed bilateral acute angle-closure glaucoma, one week after starting topiramate 25 mg/day. She was seen at the Ophthalmology Emergency Department of the Fundação João Penido Burnier (Campinas, SP, Brazil) with a 4 hours history of blurr

Medical and surgical treatment of secondary angle closure glaucoma has often been disappointing. Therefore the visual prognosis of these eyes is mostly restricted. Transscleral cyclophotocoagulation is a relatively safe method for the treatment of advanced refractory glaucoma and represents the method of choice in secondary angle closure glaucoma due to anterior peripheral synechiae. In younger glaucoma patients and patients with traumatic glaucoma, long-term reduction of the intraocular pressure is only partially achieved. New surgical techniques will increase the possibilities of an effectiv

Non-rubeotic angle-closure glaucoma associated with ciliary medulloepithelioma was reported in a 3-year-old boy. On the first visit, a free-floating white mass was observed in the anterior chamber of his right eye. The mass disappeared spontaneously after 5 months of observation. One year later, angle-closure glaucoma with peripheral anterior synechia occurred in the same eye and intraocular pressure rose to 55 mmHg. After glaucoma surgery, the white mass appeared again in the anterior chamber of his right eye. By cycloscopy, numerous small grayish-white masses could be seen on the ciliary bod
