BACKGROUND: Ticks are known to transmit a wide range of diseases, including those caused by bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The expansion of tick habitats has been intensified in recent years due to various factors such as global warming, alterations in microclimate, and human activities. Consequently, the probability of human exposure to diseases transmitted by ticks has increased, leading to a higher degree of risk associated with such diseases.
METHODS: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of domestic and international literature databases to determine the current distributi…

The climate change induced global warming, and in particular the increased frequency and intensity of heat waves, have been linked to health problems. Among them, scientific works have been reporting an increased incidence of neurological diseases, encompassing also neurodegenerative ones, such as Dementia of Alzheimer's type, Parkinson's Disease, and Motor Neuron Diseases. Although the increase in prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases is well documented by literature reports, the link between global warming and the enhanced prevalence of such diseases remains elusive. This is the main them…

Ocean warming and increasing incidence of marine heat waves (MHW) are having far-reaching impacts on coastal ecosystems. The small intertidal asterinid starfish, Parvulastra exigua, in south-eastern Australia, occurs in a global warming hotspot. Development occurs in the intertidal as this species lays eggs and has benthic larvae. The impact of temperature on development to the juvenile was determined over a broad temperature range (12-28 °C) encompassing temperatures experienced during the breeding season (16-20 °C) and cool (- 4 °C) and warm (+10 °C) extremes with the higher temperatures (24…

With global warming, rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) has emerged as a critical driver of vegetation productivity and the terrestrial carbon sink. Yet, the thresholds beyond which VPD constrains tree growth remain poorly quantified. Using 2,953 tree-ring sites and combining generalized additive models with threshold regression models, we demonstrate that growth-related VPD thresholds are widespread. Approximately 63% of the studied species groups exhibited identifiable thresholds, which were generally lower in cool, humid regions and higher in warm, dry environments. For the sam…

Climate warming lengthens the productive season in extratropical forests. Yet there is inconclusive evidence on whether this in turn elicits enhanced tree growth and forest carbon sequestration. In this study, we used cellular observations of conifer wood formation spanning boreal to semiarid forests to quantify the relative importance of cambial growth rate versus season length in driving annual cell production, the key process underlying woody growth. We found that rate is the primary driver of annual cell production. Furthermore, whereas the growing season lengthens with annual temperature,

Models generated from laboratory-based thermal performance experiments predict that arthropod crop pest densities will escalate under rising temperatures. Conversely, natural enemies are predicted to decline under warming, exacerbating pest outbreaks. We tested these predictions using 141,562 field-year observations of 43 arthropod populations across spatial and temporal temperature gradients. Pests exhibited remarkable heterogeneity of responses to elevated temperatures, with some populations increasing and others decreasing. Natural enemies also showed variable responses to elevated temperat

Intertidal organisms face severe thermal stress due to global warming and frequent marine heatwaves. Thus, this study focused to investigate metabolic characteristics of the intertidal marine mollusk Peronia verruculata under different intensities of simulated marine heatwave stress (Normal Temperature, NT: 26 °C; High Temperature, HT: 30 °C; and Extreme High Temperature, EHT: 34 °C) for 72 h based on behavioral observations, body energy reserves, and differential metabolic markers. The results showed that the survival rate, cumulative movement distance, movement duration, and feeding duration…

Peatlands are a major natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4). Yet their responses to warming remain highly uncertain, because ecosystem-level understanding of warming effects on CH4 production and oxidation is limited. Here, we conducted an open-top chamber (OTC) warming experiment in the world's largest alpine peatlands (Zoige) under both waterlogged and drained regimes. We monitored stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of CH4 and CO2 in soil gas and porewater throughout five growing seasons, coupled with net CH4 fluxes, to tease apart OTC warming effects on methanogenesis (quantifi

Wearable healthcare electronics are rapidly emerging as a distinct electronics sector in the digital era1-6, offering substantial economic opportunities and crucial medical benefits. However, their interactions with environmental and social systems remain poorly understood7-9, leaving critical sustainability challenges unaddressed. Although current efforts have focused on material-level improvements, broader system-level dynamics remain unexplored. Here we present an integrated systems engineering framework based on de novo life-cycle inventories and diffusion-linked scaling to quantify global

New energy vehicles (NEVs) have emerged as an imperative pathway for global transportation energy transition and climate change mitigation. Employing monthly panel data from 281 cities in China during 2016-2022, this study systematically investigates the impact of climate warming on the NEVs industry. The findings demonstrate that climate warming significantly accelerates the application and promotion of NEVs. Besides, mechanism analysis reveals that public environmental concern is the important conduction path for the popularization of NEVs stimulated by climate warming. In addition, official

Reducing methane from livestock slurry is one of the quickest ways to counteract global warming. A straightforward strategy is to reduce slurry retention time inside pig houses by frequent transfer to outside storages, where temperature and therefore microbial activity are lower. We demonstrate three frequent slurry removal strategies in pig houses in a year-round continuous measurement campaign. Slurry funnels, slurry trays, and weekly flushing reduced slurry methane emission by 89, 81, and 53%, respectively. Slurry funnels and slurry trays reduced ammonia emission by 25-30%. An extended vers…

Scrub typhus is a climate-sensitive and life-threatening vector-borne disease that poses a growing public health threat. Although the climate-epidemic associations of many vector-borne diseases have been studied for decades, the impacts of climate on scrub typhus remain poorly understood, especially in the context of global warming. Here we incorporate Chinese national surveillance data on scrub typhus from 2010 to 2019 into a climate-driven generalized additive mixed model to explain the spatiotemporal dynamics of this disease and predict how it may be affected by climate change under various…

Relatively warm environments caused by global warming enhance the productivity of aquaculture activities in tropical/subtropical regions; however, the intermittent cold stress (ICS) caused by negative Arctic Oscillation can still result in major economic losses. In contrast to endotherms, ectothermic fishes experience ambient temperature as an abiotic factor that is central to performance and survival. Therefore, the occurrence of extreme temperatures caused by climate change has ignited a surge of scientific interest from ecologists, economists and physiologists. In this study, we test the tr…

Trifluoromethane (CHF3, HFC-23), with a 100-year global warming potential (GWP) of 12400, is regulated under the Kyoto Protocol. HFC-23 emissions in East Asia, especially in China, are currently thought to represent the majority of global HFC-23 emissions. This study provides both a bottom-up emission inventory and the multiannual top-down estimate of HFC-23 emissions in East Asia during 2007-2012. The new bottom-up inventory yields improved simulated HFC-23 mixing ratios compared to previous bottom-up inventories. The top-down estimate uses inverse modeling to further improve the model-measur…

Antarctic mass loss has been a major contributor to global sea-level rise for most of the last few decades, mainly driven by West Antarctica1. During 2021-2023, however, a sharp increase in surface mass balance over Queen Mary Land and Wilkes Land in East Antarctica offset West Antarctic loss and slowed the rate of total ice mass loss2,3. Although this slowdown is consistent with the expected long-term precipitation response to global warming through poleward-shifted storm tracks and Antarctic moistening4, our results point to a different mechanism. Here we show that the recent ice mass gain w…

Typhoons would alter soil respiration by altering forest structure and tree growth. However, there is limi-ted information on how typhoon will alter soil respiration under global warming with increasing intensity and frequency of typhoons in the future. We examined the effects of Typhoon Doksuri and soil warming (+4 ℃ via cable warming) on soil respiration in a subtropical broadleaf evergreen forest in 2023 by measuring soil respiration and environmental factors using a high time-resolution automated monitoring system. The results showed that the Typhoon Doksuri did not affect soil respiration…

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is closely associated with climate change and, in particular, with global warming. In addition to melting of ice and snow, rising sea level, and flooding of coastal areas, global warming is leading to a tropicalization of temperate marine ecosystems. Moreover, the effects of air pollution on airway and lung diseases are well documented as reported by the World Allergy Organization.
METHODS: Scientific literature was searched for studies investigating the effect of the interaction between air pollution and climate change on …
