Contact urticaria has been recognized since the 19th century, but rubber contact urticaria was not described until 1979. This sensitivity to rubber gloves, which often affects health care and cleaning workers, is now considered an occupationally related disease that must be considered in the diagnosis of contact urticaria.

Most dental practitioners now routinely wear gloves while treating patients. The most commonly used types of gloves contain latex. Latex is also present in other personal protective equipment, such as masks, eyewear and clinic gowns. In a survey carried out in 1987 and 1988 in Vancouver British Columbia, 704 dental professionals filled out an anonymous questionnaire and submitted a blood sample. Occupational skin-related problems include dermatoses caused by agents in the working environment. For health care workers, these occupational dermatoses could be due to usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, masks, goggles, and other protective equipment. These PPE contribute to both allergic and irritant contact dermatitis. This review summarized the skin damage after PPE usage and hand hygiene protocol. Recommendations should be established to prevent these occupational dermatoses from PPE usage.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to gather data about unwrapping a packaged limb tourniquet from its plastic wrapper while wearing different types of gloves. Because already unwrapped tourniquets require no time to unwrap, unwrapping data may provide insights into the issue of having tourniquets unwrapped when stowed in a first aid kit of a Serviceperson at war.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a laboratory setting, 36 tests of nine glove groups were performed in which four people, gloved and ungloved, unwrapped tourniquets. Other tourniquets were environmentally exposed for 3 months.
