Exfoliating goblet cell hyperplasia mimicking pterygium: a clinicopathological case report.

We present an interventional case report of exfoliating goblet cell hyperplasia mimicking pterygium. A 44-year-old male with bilateral lesions of the nasal bulbar conjunctiva extending over the cornea, consistent with pterygia, underwent surgical excision of the lesion in his left eye. Histopathologic examination revealed an exophytic lesion made up of proliferated goblet cells with benign cytologic features. Some of the goblet cells were atrophic and seemed to be desquamating from the lesion surface. Cytologic examination of a tear specimen collected from the right eye revealed the presence o

Effect of suction ring application during LASIK on goblet cell density.

PURPOSE: To study the effect of LASIK surgery on conjunctival goblet cells as one of the proposed mechanisms for dry eye occurring after LASIK. METHODS: This prospective study included 22 eyes (11 patients) that underwent LASIK for the correction of myopia. Three pairs of samples were taken from the bulbar conjunctiva of each eye. The first pair was taken preoperatively before application of the suction ring. The second and third pairs were taken from the same sites at 1 week and 1 month consecutively. The first site was at 12 o'clock and the second at the inferotemporal quadrant between 7 an

Goblet cell mimickers in esophageal biopsies are not associated with an increased risk for dysplasia.

CONTEXT: Identification of intestinal-type goblet cells (ITGCs) in hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections of esophageal biopsies is essential for the diagnosis of Barrett metaplasia. However, we have seen cases diagnosed as Barrett metaplasia based solely on cells that pose morphologic similarity to ITGCs on hematoxylin-eosin staining or stain positive with Alcian blue. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical significance of goblet cell mimickers. DESIGN: Initial biopsies from 78 patients with original diagnosis of Barrett metaplasia negative for dysplasia and a mean follow-up of 72 months were rev

Stat6 dependent goblet cell hyperplasia during intestinal nematode infection.

To identify the role of signal transducer and activator of transcription factor 6 (Stat6) in the development of intestinal goblet cell hyperplasia during nematode infection, we compared the number of goblet cells in Stat6 deficient (Stat6 -/-) mice with that generated in wild-type (Stat6 +/+) mice in Trichinella spiralis infection. The number of goblet cells significantly increased with infection in wild-type mice. However, Stat6 -/- failed to generate infection-induced goblet cell hyperplasia and a significantly lower number of goblet cells was observed in Stat6 -/- mice on days 14 and 21 pos

Allergen challenge causes inflammation but not goblet cell degranulation in asthmatic subjects.

BACKGROUND: An allergen challenge to the airways of sensitized mice causes eosinophilic airway inflammation and degranulation of goblet cells, which lead to airway obstruction. However, whether allergen challenge causes a similar pattern of airway inflammation and goblet cell degranulation in human beings is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether allergen challenge increases airway inflammatory cells and causes goblet cell degranulation in human subjects with asthma. METHODS: In bronchial biopsy specimens taken from 8 asthmatic subjects at 1 and 24 hours after

Goblet cell density in acute otitis media caused by Moraxella catarrhalis.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Secretory otitis media is associated with a highly increased goblet cell density, confirming the secretory pathogenesis of this disease. Previous studies have shown that the middle ear goblet cell density, and thus the secretory capacity, are massively increased during experimental acute otitis media and at least 6 months thereafter, conceivably predisposing to the subsequent development of secretory otitis media. These studies used middle ear inoculation of either Streptococcus pneumoniae, nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae, or H. influenzae type b. The present stud

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix endoscopically diagnosed and examined with p53 immunostaining.

We report a case of a 62-year-old woman with goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix. She was admitted to our hospital in September 1994 after the discovery of liver tumors. After admission, a tumor in the right kidney and multiple tumors in the liver were found. She was diagnosed with renal cell cancer and metastasis to the liver and underwent excision of the kidney and enucleation of the largest liver tumor. Histological examination revealed that the liver tumor was a metastatic carcinoid tumor. As carcinoid tumors have frequently been found in the appendix, endoscopic examination was performe

The effect of vitamin A status on the differentiation and function of goblet cells in the rat intestine.

The prevalence of goblet cells in duodenal crypts decreased to 60% of normal at day 4 of deficiency. Villus and crypt length, total mucosal cell number, cell cycle time, and migration rate were unaffected at day 8 of deficiency. The carbohydrate content, protein content, and molecular size of high molecular weight glycoproteins (peak I) were unaffected at day 8 of deficiency. The incorporation of L-[3H]threonine (G) into proteins of all peaks were reduced to 60% of normal at day 8 of deficiency. The incorporation of L-[1-14C]fucose into glycoprotein fell to 25% of normal in peak I, and to 70 t

When Appendicitis Masks a Malignancy: A Case of Appendiceal Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma (GCA) of the appendix is a rare, mucus-producing tumor that exhibits both mucinous and neuroendocrine differentiation. It is most commonly diagnosed in patients presenting with acute appendicitis, and the definitive diagnosis is typically made after pathological examination. GCA is associated with a high risk of metastasis, with common sites including the right colon, ileum, lymph nodes, peritoneum, and omentum, and ovarian metastases are particularly noted in women with stage 4 disease. This case study focuses on a 55-year-old female patient who presented with right

Disease-specific transcriptional programs govern airway goblet cell metaplasia.

Hypersecretion of airway mucus caused by goblet cell metaplasia is a characteristic of chronic pulmonary inflammatory diseases including asthma, cystic fibrosis (CF), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Goblet cells originate from airway progenitor club cells. However, the molecular mechanisms and features of goblet cell metaplasia in lung disease are poorly understood. Herein, public single-cell RNA sequencing datasets of human lungs were reanalyzed to explore the transitional phase as club cells differentiate into goblet cells in asthma, CF, and COPD. We found that changes in c

Zingiber officinale supplementation suppresses eimeriosis and regulates goblet cell response.

Coccidiosis affects both domestic and wild animals and negatively impacting industries worldwide. Medicinal plants are widely used against parasites. Using infected mice with Eimeria papillata, we assessed the anticoccidial impact of Zingiber officinale extract (ZE). The animals in the first group were just given distilled water, while the animals in the second group were given ZE. The parasite's oocysts were infected into the third and fourth groups. The fourth group was given ZE for five days. The oocysts in mice faeces were reduced after treatment with ZE. The total parasitic stages were re

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma of the appendix: an update and practical approach to diagnosis and grading.

Goblet cell adenocarcinoma is a rare appendiceal tumour with amphicrine differentiation that has distinct morphologic and clinical features compared to carcinomas seen elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors have engendered considerable confusion in the literature regarding their classification, and they have been described under several different names including goblet cell carcinoid, adenocarcinoid, and adenocarcinoma, among others. In the recent fifth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Digestive System Tumors, goblet cell adenocarcinoma is the preferred

Vasoactive intestinal peptide regulates ileal goblet cell production in mice.

Innervation of the intestinal mucosa has gained more attention with demonstrations of tuft and enteroendocrine cell innervation. However, the role(s) these fibers play in maintaining the epithelial and mucus barriers are still poorly understood. This study therefore examines the proximity of mouse ileal goblet cells to neuronal fibers, and the regulation of goblet cell production by vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). An organotypic intestinal slice model that maintains the cellular diversity of the intestinal wall ex vivo was used. An ex vivo copper-free click-reaction to label glycosaminogl

Goblet Cell Carcinoid (GCC) of the Appendix presenting as a Small Bowel Obstruction.

A 68 year old male presented to our Emergency Department with a one-day history of right sided abdominal pain, distention and vomiting on a background of no previous abdominal surgery. Abdominal CT demonstrated a high grade, closed loop small bowel obstruction involving the terminal segment of the ileum. Also of significance was alow-density appendiceal nodule. A subsequent laparoscopy revealed the tip of the appendix adherent to the mesosigmoid colon, forming a tight band and consequent mechanical bowel obstruction. Furthermore, the meso-appendix was embedded with crystal deposits and extrudi

Goblet cell carcinomas of the appendix: rare but aggressive neoplasms with challenging management.

Goblet cell carcinomas (GCC) are a rare, aggressive sub-type of appendiceal tumours with neuroendocrine features, and controversy exists with regards to therapeutic strategy. We undertook a retrospective review of GCC patients surgically treated at two tertiary referral centres. Clinical and histopathological data were extracted from a prospectively maintained database. Survival analyses utilised Kaplan-Meier methodology. Twenty-one patients were identified (9 females). Median age at diagnosis was 55 years (range 32-77). There were 3, 6 and 9 grade 1, 2 and 3 tumours, respectively. One, 10, 5

A goblet cell carcinoma of the appendix presenting as an acute appendicitis: a case report.

Background: A goblet cell carcinoma of the appendix is a rare neoplasm with histological features of both adenocarcinomas and carcinoid tumours. It has a more aggressive behaviour in comparison to the more common classic neuroendocrine appendiceal tumours. Clinical presentation is variable and a significant proportion of patients present with an acute appendicitis. The aggressive evolution of these tumours makes the management more challenging.Case report: We report the case of a 43-year-old man with acute right iliac fossa pain who was initially diagnosed with an acute appendicitis. Histologi

Context-Dependent Regulation of Conjunctival Goblet Cell Function by Allergic Mediators.

In the eye, goblet cells responsible for secreting mucins are found in the conjunctiva. When mucin production is not tightly regulated several ocular surface disorders may occur. In this study, the effect of the T helper (Th) 2-type cytokines IL4, IL5, and IL13 on conjunctival goblet cell function was explored. Goblet cells from rat conjunctiva were cultured and characterized. The presence of cytokine receptors was confirmed by Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). Changes in intracellular [Ca2+], high molecular weight glycoconjugate secretion, and proliferation were measur
