[Gray matter abnormalities in developmental stuttering determined with voxel-based morphometry].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differences of regional grey matter volume between adults with persistent developmental stuttering and fluent speaking adults, and to determine whether stutterers have anomalous anatomy of speech-relevant brain areas that possibly affect speech fluency. METHODS: High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning was performed on 10 adults with developmental stuttering, aged 26 (21 - 35) with the onset age of 4 (3 - 7) and 12 age, sex, hand preference, and education-matched controls. The customized brain templates were created in order to improve spatial no

Gray matter changes in late life depression--a structural MRI analysis.

Multiple brain morphometric changes have been reported in late-life depression (LLD), mostly in studies comparing volumes of circumscribed brain areas. The aim of our study is to characterize the volumetric changes of multiple gray matter regions in relation to age of onset/duration of illness. We predicted that the association of gray matter volumes with total duration of illness and age of onset would differ depending on whether the region was susceptible to the toxic effects of chronic exposure to cortisol or to the vascular/neurodegenerative changes accompanying prodromal dementia. Regional abnormalities of white and gray matter in youths with conduct problems.

Conduct problems (CP) encompass a wide array of behavioral difficulties in youths, including aggression, defiance, and rule-breaking, resulting in interpersonal conflicts. CP comprises various psychiatric conditions, constituting a significant public health burden. This study performed a whole-brain coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA) that synthesized findings from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and surface-based morphometry (SBM) studies to investigate consistent structural brain abnormalities in children and adolescents with CP. A total of 35 studies were ev

Molecular and micro-architectural mapping of gray matter alterations in psychosis.

The psychosis spectrum encompasses a heterogeneous range of clinical conditions associated with abnormal brain development. Detecting patterns of atypical neuroanatomical maturation across psychiatric disorders requires an interpretable metric standardized by age-, sex- and site-effect. The molecular and micro-architectural attributes that account for these deviations in brain structure from typical neurodevelopment are still unknown. Here, we aggregate structural magnetic resonance imaging data from 38,696 healthy controls (HC) and 1256 psychosis-related conditions, including first-degree rel

A multimodal meta-analysis of gray matter alterations in trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Brain gray matter alterations in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) have been detected in prior neuroimaging studies, but the results are heterogeneous. The current study conducted coordinate-based meta-analyses across neuroimaging studies, aiming to find the pattern of brain anatomic and functional alterations in patients with TN. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify relevant publications. A multimodal meta-analysis for whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies and functional imaging studies in TN was

Atrophy in subcortical gray matter in adult patients with moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: Acute cerebrovascular accidents, long-term hypoperfusion, and/or remote neuronal degeneration may lead to structural alterations in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). This study sought to comprehensively investigate the distribution characteristics of subcortical gray matter volume and their correlations with angiographic changes in the intracranial artery in patients with MMD. METHOD: One hundred forty-two patients with MMD and 142 age- and sex-matched healthy controls underwent 3-dimensional high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging. Volumes of subcortical gray ma

Associations and Heritability of Auditory Encoding, Gray Matter, and Attention in Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Auditory encoding abnormalities, gray-matter loss, and cognitive deficits are all candidate schizophrenia (SZ) endophenotypes. This study evaluated associations between and heritability of auditory network attributes (function and structure) and attention in healthy controls (HC), SZ patients, and unaffected relatives (UR). METHODS: Whole-brain maps of M100 auditory activity from magnetoencephalography recordings, cortical thickness (CT), and a measure of attention were obtained from 70 HC, 69 SZ patients, and 35 UR. Heritability estimates (h2r) were obtained for M100, CT at each

Intrinsic gray-matter connectivity of the brain in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been assumed to be associated with aberrant brain connectivity. However, research suggests that brain connectivity abnormalities should not be restricted to extrinsic white matter connectivity, but may also impact on intrinsic gray matter connectivity. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the intrinsic gray-matter connectivity in MDD. METHODS: The participants were 16 first-episode, drug-naïve patients with MDD and 16 healthy controls matched on age and gender. All participants were scanned by 3.0T structural magnetic resonance imaging. Glo

Volumetric and surface characteristics of gray matter in adult dyslexia and dyscalculia.

Dyslexia, dyscalculia and their comorbid manifestation are prevalent disorders associated with well-documented behavioral manifestations. However, attempts to relate these manifestations to abnormalities in brain structure have yielded mixed results, with no clear consistency across a range of measures. In this study, we used a unique design including adults with dyslexia, dyscalculia, both disorders and controls, to explore differences in gray matter characteristics across groups. Specifically, we examined whether dyslexia, dyscalculia, or their comorbid manifestation could be related to volu

Gray Matter Correlates of Finger Gnosis in Children: A VBM Study.

Accumulating evidence relates finger gnosis (also called finger sense or finger gnosia), the ability to identify and individuate fingers, to cognitive processing, particularly numerical cognition. Multiple studies have shown that finger gnosis scores correlate with or predict numerical skills in children. Neuropsychological cases as well as magnetic stimulation studies have also shown that finger agnosia (defects in finger gnosis) often co-occurs with cognitive impairments, including agraphia and acalculia. However, our knowledge of the structural and functional correlates, and the development

Psychoradiological investigations of gray matter alterations in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder with high mortality. The underlying neurobiological mechanisms are not well understood, and high-resolution structural magnetic resonance brain imaging studies have given inconsistent results. Here we aimed to psychoradiologically define the most prominent and replicable abnormalities of gray matter volume (GMV) in AN patients, and to examine their relationship to demographics and clinical characteristics, by means of a new coordinate-based meta-analytic technique called seed-based d mapping (SDM). In a pooled analysis of all AN patients w

Changes in gray and white matter in subgroups within the tinnitus population.

In this study, we investigated gray and white matter changes in subgroups within the larger tinnitus population related to differences in severity or duration of tinnitus symptoms. Tinnitus is the illusory perception of sound in the absence of an external source, most often experienced as a chronic condition. The psychological reaction to the sound constitutes the severity, or degree of discomfort experienced, and the duration refers to the time since onset of chronic tinnitus. We used voxel- and surface-based morphometry to investigate gray matter changes and diffusion tensor imaging (using f

In Vivo Tau, Amyloid, and Gray Matter Profiles in the Aging Brain.

UNLABELLED: We provide a comparative in vivo examination of the brain network-based distribution of two hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology in cognitively normal individuals: (1) Tau, detected with a novel positron emission tomography (PET) tracer known as (18)F-AV-1451; and (2) amyloid-β, quantified with (11)C-PiB PET. We used a high-resolution graph-based approach to investigate local-to-local and local-to-distributed cortical associations between the maps of Tau, amyloid-β, and gray matter intensity. Our study shows that Tau and amyloid-β deposits are associated with distinctive

Frontobasal gray matter loss is associated with the TREM2 p.R47H variant.

A rare heterozygous TREM2 variant p.R47H (rs75932628) has been associated with an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aimed to investigate the clinical presentation, neuropsychological profile, and regional pattern of gray matter and white matter loss associated with the TREM2 variant p.R47H, and to establish which regions best differentiate p.R47H carriers from noncarriers in 2 sample sets (Spanish and Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, ADNI1). This was a cross-sectional study including a total number of 16 TREM2 p.R47H carriers diagnosed with AD or mild cognitive impair

Variation of selective gray and white matter atrophy in Huntington's disease.

The relationship between the extent of local gray/white matter atrophy, genetic load, and clinical impairment was studied in Huntington's disease (HD) by means of voxel-based morphometry. T1-weighted brain images from 33 patients (mean age 49.5, range 25-73 years) with HD duration of 1 to 15 years were analyzed by correlation of each voxel intensity with the number of CAG triplets and the UHDRS-motor score (P < 0.001). The CAG number correlated inversely with gray matter intensity in the caudate nuclei and with white matter intensity in the both postcentral gyri and the right cerebellum. The U

G protein activation by endomorphins in the mouse periaqueductal gray matter.

The midbrain periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is an important brain region for the coordination of mu-opioid-induced pharmacological actions. The present study was designed to determine whether newly isolated mu-opioid peptide endomorphins can activate G proteins through mu-opioid receptors in the PAG by monitoring the binding to membranes of the non-hydrolyzable analog of GTP, guanosine-5'-O-(3-[(35)S]thio)triphosphate ([(35)S]GTPgammaS). An autoradiographic [(35)S]GTPgammaS binding study showed that both endomorphin-1 and -2 produced similar anatomical distributions of activated G proteins i
