A facile halogenation method for highly selective synthesis of 9-X-o-carboranes, 9,12-X2-o-carboranes, 9-X-12-X'-o-carboranes, 9-X-m-carboranes, 9,10-X2-m-carboranes, and 9-X-10-X'-m-carboranes (X, X' = Cl, Br, I) has been developed on the basis of our previous work. A series of new stable halogenated carbenes, 1-tert-butyl-3,4-diaryl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidenes, has been synthesized. Enzyme immobilization using inorganic membranes has enticed increased attention as they not only improve enzyme stability, but also furnish user-friendly biodevices that can be tailored to different applications. A theoretical study of the hydrogen bond (HB) and halogen bond (XB) complexes between 1-halo-closo-carboranes and hydrogen cyanide (NCH) as HB and XB probe has been carried out at the MP2 computational level. Soil contamination by volatile organic compounds has been greatly studied. However, there is still limited information regarding the occurrence, distribution and health effects of typical volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHCs) in soils on a national scale. Sorptive landfill liners can prevent the migration of the leachate pollutants. However, their sorption ability will decrease over time. A method should be developed to maintain the sorption ability of landfill liners. Halogenated dodecaborates, and especially dodecaiodododecaborate(2-), are found to trigger effectively the release of the contents of phospholipid liposomes, including liposomes containing distearoylphosphatidylcholine and cholesterol, which are used clinically in cancer therapy. The basis of the release is studied through differential scanning calorimetry, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Upon administration at high concentrations, drastic morphological changes are induced by the dodecaborates. Their possible use in triggered release is suggested.

By combining easy and fast leukocyte enrichment with aminophenyl-fluorescein (APF) staining we developed a method to quickly and specifically address the halogenating activity of the immunological relevant blood heme peroxidases myeloperoxidase and eosinophil peroxidase, respectively. Diphenyl diselenide catalyzes the halolactonization of unsaturated acids with N-halosuccinimides under mild conditions. The diselenide not only accelerates the reactions, but in some cases affords regiocontrol in favor of gamma-lactone products. Experiments show that the regioselectivity in favor of gamma-lactones is a result of kinetic rather than thermodynamic control.

Patterns of volatile ECD-active substances in marine air at the ultra trace level were investigated. The protocol used carbon based adsorbents, thermodesorption and thick film HRGC-ECD together with a second ECD in line with oxygen doped make-up gas. A protocol for assessment of biological hazard from ultraviolet radiation sources was developed. The protocol utilized both a ultraviolet radiation spectroradiometer and a broadband ultraviolet radiation meter for the determination of the erythemally effective irradiance and the actinic irradiance. A 250 W tungsten halogen lamp operating at 9.5 A was tested with this protocol. It was found that the erythemally effective irradiance varied from 41 microW cm(-2) at 10 cm to 1.5 microW cm(-2) at 50 cm. The bacterial non-heme haloperoxidases are highly related to an esterase from Pseudomonas fluorescens, at structural and functional levels. 10 cases of dermatitis in a fine organic chemicals plant are reported. These cases were all due to exposure to chemical compounds with reactive bromine or chlorine atoms. This type of chemical is always extremely irritant, but evidence is put forward to suggest that these cases were the result of allergic sensitization. Chemicals with reactive halogen atoms should always be handled with extreme care and patch testing should be approached with caution.
