Characterizing Exposure to Head Acceleration Events in Youth Football Using an Instrumented Mouthpiece.

Understanding characteristics of head acceleration events (HAEs) in youth football is vital in developing strategies to improve athlete safety. This study aimed to characterize HAEs in youth football using an instrumented mouthpiece. Youth football athletes (ages 11-13) participating on two teams were enrolled in this study for one season. Each athlete was instrumented with a mouthpiece-based sensor throughout the season. HAEs were verified on film to ensure that mouthpiece-based sensors triggered during contact. The number of HAEs, peak resultant linear and rotational accelerations, and peak

An Investigation of Factors Associated With Head Impact Exposure in Professional Male and Female Australian Football Players.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to head acceleration events (HAEs) has been associated with player sex, player position, and player experience in North American football, ice hockey, and lacrosse. Little is known of these factors in professional Australian football. Video analysis allows HAE verification and characterization of important determinants of injury. PURPOSE: To characterize verified HAEs in the nonhelmeted contact sport of professional Australian football and investigate the association of sex, player position, and player experience with HAE frequency and magnitude. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptiv

Surface Contact Features, Impact Obliquity, and Preimpact Rotational Motion in Concussive Helmet-to-Ground Impacts: Assessment via a New Impact Test Device.

This paper reports the development of a test device for replicating unique features of concussion-causing helmet-to-ground impacts. Helmet-to-ground impacts are characterized by an oblique impact velocity vector, preimpact rotational motion of the helmeted head, and an impact into a compliant frictional surface of unknown effective mass. No helmet assessment testing program replicates these impact characteristics, yet they influence brain injury risk and therefore may influence helmet design priorities. To replicate these mechanics, the carriage of a drop tower was modified by the addition of

Characterization of Concussive Events in Professional American Football Using Videogrammetry.

Sports concussions offer a unique opportunity to study head kinematics associated with mild traumatic brain injury. In this study, a model-based image matching (MBIM) approach was employed to analyze video footage of 57 concussions which occurred in National Football League (NFL) games. By utilizing at least two camera views, higher frame rate footage (> 60 images s-1), and laser scans of the field and helmets involved in each case, it was possible to calculate the change in velocity of the helmet during impact in six degrees of freedom. The average impact velocity for these concussive events

Head impact exposure in youth football: high school ages 14 to 18 years and cumulative impact analysis.

Sports-related concussion is the most common athletic head injury with football having the highest rate among high school athletes. Traditionally, research on the biomechanics of football-related head impact has been focused at the collegiate level. Less research has been performed at the high school level, despite the incidence of concussion among high school football players. The objective of this study is to twofold: to quantify the head impact exposure in high school football, and to develop a cumulative impact analysis method. Head impact exposure was measured by instrumenting the helmets

Consensus Head Acceleration Measurement Practices (CHAMP): Origins, Methods, Transparency and Disclosure.

The use of head kinematic measurement devices has recently proliferated owing to technology advances that make such measurement more feasible. In parallel, demand to understand the biomechanics of head impacts and injury in sports and the military has increased as the burden of such loading on the brain has received focused attention. As a result, the field has matured to the point of needing methodological guidelines to improve the rigor and consistency of research and reduce the risk of scientific bias. To this end, a diverse group of scientists undertook a comprehensive effort to define cur

Development and Evaluation of a Test Method for Assessing the Performance of American Football Helmets.

As more is learned about injury mechanisms of concussion and scenarios under which injuries are sustained in football games, methods used to evaluate protective equipment must adapt. A combination of video review, videogrammetry, and laboratory reconstructions was used to characterize concussive impacts from National Football League games during the 2015-2017 seasons. Test conditions were generated based upon impact locations and speeds from this data set, and a method for scoring overall helmet performance was created. Head kinematics generated using a linear impactor and sliding table fixtur

Fit, stability and comfort assessment of custom-fitted bicycle helmet inner liner designs, based on 3D anthropometric data.

Research has demonstrated that a better-fitted bicycle helmet offers improved protection to the rider during an impact. Nowadays, bicycle helmets in the market that range in size from small/medium to medium/large might not fit the diverse range of human head shapes and dimensions. 3D scanning was used to create 3D head shape databases of 20 participants who volunteered for the study. We developed new custom-fitted helmet inner liners, based on the 3D head shape of two sub-groups of participants, to map their head sizes and contours closely to the conventional Medium (M) and Large (L) sizes as

CFD modeling of the underwash effect of military helmets as a possible mechanism for blast-induced traumatic brain injury.

Underwash occurs as the incoming shockwaves enter the helmet subspace and develop a high pressure region at the opposite side of the head. The mechanism leading to the underwash is yet not well understood. To investigate this effect, the turbulent, supersonic flow of compressible air approaching the head-helmet assembly from different directions was studied through computational fluid dynamics simulations. The effects of different incident overpressures and helmet gap size on the underwash incidence were further evaluated. The backflow-induced pressure from the air traveling outside of the hel

The effects of motorcycle helmets upon seeing and hearing.

This study assessed the effects of motorcycle helmets upon seeing and hearing by having 50 riders operate over a test route, changing lanes in response to an audible signal under three helmet conditions: none, partial coverage, and full coverage. Half of the subjects were assessed for the degree of head rotation during the lane changes, while the other half were assessed for hearing threshold (decibel level at which they first responded to the signal). Results showed that subjects in the vision study increased the degree of head rotation in proportion to the vision restriction imposed by the h

Wearing a Surgical Vest With a Sterile Surgical Helmet System Decreases Contamination of the Surgical Field.

BACKGROUND: Sterile surgical helmet systems are frequently utilized in total knee arthroplasty procedures to protect the surgeon while maintaining a comfortable working environment. However, common helmet systems pressurize the space between the surgical gown and the surgeon's skin. In gowns with a back seam, this may allow contaminated skin particles to escape into the surgical field. By measuring bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs), this study sought to determine if occlusion of the open back seam reduced the risk of potential contamination. METHODS: First, qualitative analysis depicting

Evaluating Polo Helmet Performance Across Different Impact Test Systems.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated head impact response between different helmet impact test systems by comparing the performance of ten polo helmets. METHODS: Helmets were evaluated using three test systems: a twin-wire guided drop tower, an oblique drop tower, and an impact pendulum. Impact tests were conducted at matched locations (front boss, side, rear boss) and speeds (3.46, 5.46 m/s). We employed a linear mixed model with helmet model as a random effect and calculated the least square mean differences between systems for peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), pe

Smart Textile Impact Sensor for e-Helmet to Measure Head Injury.

Concussions, a prevalent public health concern in the United States, often result from mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), notably in sports such as American football. There is limited exploration of smart-textile-based sensors for measuring the head impacts associated with concussions in sports and recreational activities. In this paper, we describe the development and construction of a smart textile impact sensor (STIS) and validate STIS functionality under high magnitude impacts. This STIS can be inserted into helmet cushioning to determine head impact force. The designed 2 × 2 STIS matri
