Occupational health profile of Brazilian immigrant housecleaners in Massachusetts.

The occupational health and safety conditions of a sample of Brazilian housecleaners in Massachusetts are examined in this article. We administered a main survey to a convenience sample of 626 Brazilian immigrant workers of all trades and a supplemental survey to 163 Brazilian housecleaners in Massachusetts in 2005 and 2006. Survey questions addressed housecleaner demographics, socioeconomic status, working conditions, and hazards of housecleaning work. Housecleaners are exposed to a variety of ergonomic, chemical, and biological hazards. Professional housecleaners' work is fast-paced, require

[Identification of environmental Actinobacteria representing an occupational health risk].

Actinobacteria, the etiologic agents of tuberculosis, actinomycosis, respiratory infections and pathological skin lesions, are also classified as hazardous biological agents at the workplace. An increased number of Actinobacteria primarily occurs at the workplaces in composting plants, agriculture, waste management facilities, libraries and museums. Robust identification of Actinobacteria requires a polyphasic diagnostic strategy including an assessment of morphological, physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic features as well as genotyping. Commercially available diagnostic kits often d

The current status and the future of occupational safety and health in Korea.

From the 1970s to 2000, the occupational accident rate in Korea showed a continuous decline. However, the rate has remained stagnant since 2000 even when the fatal injury rate has decreased 40% from that year. Injuries caused by being caught in objects have decreased while those caused by slips and falls on same level and falls from the height have increased. In 2010, the non-fatal injury rate per 100 employees was 0.63 while the fatal injury rate per 100,000 employees was 9.74. The construction industry accounted for 40.2% of all fatal injuries, and falls from the height caused 54.3% of the f

Occupational safety among dental health-care workers.

Compared to other health-care workers, dental health-care workers come in close contact with patients and use a variety of sharp and high-speed rotating instruments. It is important to understand the characteristics of the occupational accidents that occur. We reviewed incident reports from April 1, 2005, to March 31, 2010, at Matsumoto Dental University Hospital. In addition, questionnaires dealing with identification of occupational safety issues, especially splash exposures, were conducted for dentists, dental hygienists, and nurses. Thirty-two occupational injuries were reported during the

The occupational safety and health in hospitals from the point of nurses.

Hospitals have many forms of danger due to many different working conditions. Hospital personnel also take risks whilst providing health care which may cause health problems to themselves. The research, related to health and safety of nurses and other staff was carried out in order to compare and determine the occupational health problems and evaluate the occupational safety precautions and applications of a private hospital accredited with JCI (Joint Commission International) and also a university hospital. The research took place amongst 162 nurses of a university hospital and 150 nurses of

Occupational health nurse practitioners' roles in workers' compensation.

The occupational health nurse practitioner is an integral part of coordinating care for the injured or ill worker. Decisions regarding whether an injury or illness is related to work are based on the practitioner's diagnosis and reports of the worker's progress. Understanding workers' compensation laws will enable the practitioner to provide efficient care for the worker.

Occupational health injuries: a brief review of three disorders.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, NIHL, and work-related hernias are preventable occupational injuries that result in decreased productivity because of lost workdays. The treatment paradigm focuses almost exclusively on preventing further loss or injury through employee education. There is a dearth of studies related to NIHL and hernias. These areas should provide a fertile ground for nurse researchers who are interested in improving occupational health outcomes for the nation's work force by being part of an interdisciplinary team that investigates these areas of concern. The key is that prevention is

Occupational stress and constructive thinking: health and job satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Occupational stress is associated with specific situations, characteristics of the work environment, and individual perceptions and reactions in the context of the workplace, but many nursing studies of occupational stress have tended to analyse aspects related to the job itself. In Brazil nursing is acknowledged as a stressful occupation whose stresses are generally associated with the job itself, while the effects of personal characteristics on an individual's response to occupational stress are dismissed. AIMS: The aim of this paper is to describe: (1) occupational stress, job

Polycystic ovarian syndrome. A challenge for occupational health nursing.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a complex problem affecting as many as 10% of a company's female work force. The condition commonly presents with symptoms of oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, central obesity, and hirsutism. Stein (1935) first postulated the condition as cystic ovaries resulting from continuous LH stimulation. A current hypothesis is that PCOS may be two conditions--one resulting from LH and a second the result of a hyperinsulinemia. Weight loss and exercise, often difficult to maintain, can often return a woman to normal ovulatory cycles. First line pharmocotherapy includes OCs wit

Occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation: a health risk assessment.

This review applies health risk assessment methodology to the subject of occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Ultraviolet radiation is produced by many sources, and for most people the sun is their main source of exposure. In the occupational environment, there are also many artificial sources, of which welding arcs are the predominant and most intense. Adverse health effects include photokeratitis, erythema, pterygium, some types of cataract, non-melanocytic skin cancer, and malignant melanoma. Outdoor workers and workers who are exposed to certain artificial sources (particu

[Occupational dangers to health of nursing staffs in hemodialysis units].

Since hemodialysis patients are at high risk for blood-borne viral infection such as hepatitis B and C virus infection, nursing staffs of the hemodialysis units have a significant occupational exposure to blood-borne virus infection. Furthermore, they are in danger of contacting occupational low back-pain because they have to take care of patients in a half-rising position. In addition, they may also suffer from burned-out syndrome because they have to look after all the chronic renal failure patients as well as run machines during the hemodialysis procedure. In this paper, we describe occupat

Climatic stress in coalmining in Germany: occupational health aspects.

Coalmining in Germany is performed in depths as low as 1400 m. Owing to an average thermal gradient of 30 m/K the work underground is burdened by heat stress to which occupational medicine must pay special attention. Therefore heat stress standards and mining safety regulations have been set up not only for coal production but also for mine rescue activities. This specific situation of heat burdened work in the coal mining industry in Germany is discussed under the specific aspects of German coalmining regulations (Klima-Bergverordnung und Plan für das Grubenrettungswesen).

Occupational exposure to solvent mixtures: effects on health and metabolism.

Exposure monitoring by personal diffusive samplers, biological monitoring of toluene exposure by urinary hippuric acid determination, haematology, serum biochemistry for liver function, and a subjective symptom survey by questionnaire were conducted on 303 male solvent workers. They were exposed to a mixture of solvents including toluene (geometric mean 18 ppm), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK; 16 ppm), isopropyl alcohol (IPA; 7 ppm), and ethyl acetate (9 ppm). The intensity was mostly below unity using the additiveness formula based on current Japanese occupational exposure limits, but more than eig

Occupational HIV infection and health care workers in the tropics.

A literature review revealed 33 reports of health care workers who have contracted HIV infection as a result of their work. Four of these were expatriate doctors who had worked in Africa. The commonest mode of transmission was needlestick injury, but several infections acquired through contact or skin or mucous membrane with infected blood have been reported. In this paper we outline how the risk of HIV infection in a health care worker can be estimated for a given number of exposures. The formula is based on the known likelihood of transmission per needlestick, the seroprevalence rate among p

Occupational health problems and adverse patient reactions in periodontics.

The purpose of the present survey was to assess the nature and extent of adverse reactions to materials and procedures among personnel in periodontal practice and their patients. A questionnaire was mailed to practicing members of the Swedish Society of Periodontists. A total of 85, about 65%, responded together with 44 dental hygienists and 64 chairside assistants. 42% had experienced adverse reactions. The majority of complaints were related to dermatoses of the hands and fingers. The remainder were respiratory or eye reactions. A specifical problem characteristically involving the hygienist

Occupational health problems and adverse patient reactions in orthodontics.

The purpose of the present investigation was to study the nature and frequency of adverse reactions to materials and procedures among orthodontists and their patients. A questionnaire about this topic was mailed to practicing members of the Norwegian Orthodontic Society, of which 137 (about 75%) responded together with 127 chairside assistants. About half of the orthodontic personnel had experienced adverse reactions. The majority of the problems were dermatoses, comprising dryness, redness, itching, thickening, reduced tactile sensitivity, fissuring, soreness/desquamation and pain of hands an

Occupational therapy education in health promotion and disease prevention.

Educational experiences and didactic materials on health promotion are necessary for occupational therapists to remain current in the profession. This paper reviews health promotion learning experiences to determine the "state of the art" in this important area. It was found that few papers or workshops have been given at recent AOTA Annual Conferences; five universities received Allied Health Grants, which included occupational therapists, to develop health promotion learning materials; and occupational therapy educational curricula for the most part do include something on health promotion.
