Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation are widely used to test the involvement of specific cortical regions in various domains such as cognition and emotion. Despite the capability of stimulation techniques to test causal directions, this approach has been only sparsely used to examine the cortical regulation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) functions such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) and to test current models in this regard. In this preregistered (PROSPERO) systematic review

INTRODUCTION: Severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a viral infection that acts to increase permeability of capillaries, resulting in internal hemorrhage. Linear frequency domain Fourier spectral analysis represents the most published noninvasive tool for diagnosing and assessing health status via calculated heart rate variability (HRV). As such, HRV may be useful in assessing clinical status in DHF patients, but is prone to erroneous results and conclusions due to the influence of the average HR during the time period of HRV assessment (defined as the "prevailing" HR). We tested the hypoth

Cerebral pulsatility is a key index of cerebral haemodynamics, a central determinant of intravascular shear stress within intracranial vessels, and is associated with cerebral small vessel disease. It increases with a spontaneously falling heart rate, but the effect of altering heart rates on cerebral haemodynamics is unknown. We therefore tested whether increasing paced heart rate would reduce middle cerebral artery Gosling's pulsatility index (PI)on transcranial ultrasound, during emergency or elective implantation of a pacemaker for bradycardia. In 20 participants (14 males, mean age 78), p

The purpose of this paper is to present a straightforward framework for Heart Rate (HR) estimation from a Phonocardiogram (PCG) record and study the association between murmur severity levels and HR. The system focuses primarily on data processing procedure, which is based on signal preprocessing using Maximal Overlap Discrete Wavelet Transform (MODWT) to delineate murmurs from heart sounds. We exploit the characteristics of Logistic function to derive an enhanced PCG envelope that serves as prerequisite for HR algorithm detection. In fact, the PCG envelope presents a cyclostationarity that ca

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure that shows the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats - a physiological phenomenon controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Over the years the analysis of this parameter has been used in many fields of medicine, including anaesthesiology, for scientific and research purposes. We carried out a review of the available literature on the applicability of HRV assessment in anaesthesiology. Several potential applications of HRV in clinical anaesthesia have been identified and proven feasible. As a non-invasive and relatively easy method to gauge

BACKGROUND: Heart rate turbulence (HRT), an ECG-based marker of autonomic cardiac regulation, has shown high prognostic value in patients with established cardiovascular diseases, while data in patients with acute ischemic stroke are scarce.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The HRT parameters turbulence onset and turbulence slope were analyzed using Holter-ECG recordings from patients with acute ischemic stroke, consecutively enrolled in the prospective observational HEBRAS study. HRT was categorized as normal (category 0; both parameters normal), abnormal (category 1; one parameter abnormal), or severe

Intrapartum fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations may represent interrupted oxygen transfer to the fetus. In many cases, these interruptions are transient and do not result in progressive fetal acidemia with risk for asphyxia and neurological compromise. When significant FHR decelerations are present, reversible causes of reduced fetal oxygen delivery should be considered and corrective measures should be undertaken to optimize oxygenation. In this review, we describe potential intrapartum causes of reduced fetal oxygen delivery and the efficacy of common interventions for an abnormal FHR traci

This study aimed to identify whether a new method using heart rate variability (HRV) could predict intradialytic hypotension (IDH) for one month in advance for patients undergoing prevalent hemodialysis. A total 71 patients were enrolled, and baseline clinical characteristics and laboratory results were collected when HRV was measured, then, the frequency of IDH was collected during the observation period. HRV parameters included heart rate, R-R interval, the standard deviation of N-N interval, the square root of the mean squared differences of successive NN intervals, very low frequency, low

Researchers have advocated for a greater focus on measuring neurobiological underpinnings of serious psychological conditions such as psychopathy. This has become particularly important to investigate early in the life span, when intervention efforts for psychopathy-related behavior like conduct disorder (CD) are more successful. Given that psychopathy is a complex syndrome, it is also important to investigate physiological processes at a dimensional level. Using a sample of 56 adolescent male offenders (Mage = 15.92; SD = 1.31), this study explored the relationship between the Psychopathy Che

Getting enough quality sleep plays a vital role in protecting our mental health, physical health, and quality of life. Sleep deprivation can make it difficult to concentrate on daily activities, and lower sleep quality is associated with hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia. The amount of sleep we get is important, but in recent years, quality sleep has also been deemed significant. Polysomnography, which has been the gold standard in assessing sleep quality based on stages, requires that the subject be attached to electrodes, which can disrupt sleep. An easier method to objectively

PURPOSE: To determine whether heart-rate variability (HRV) was correlated with other training-load and training-tolerance markers for monitoring the effect of a training session on elite synchronized swimmers.
METHODS: The authors recorded the resting HRV of 12 elite swimmers (mean age = 21.5 [3.5] y) 3 times over 1 wk with a cadence of 48 h prior to the 2015 World Swimming Championships. They continuously monitored heart rate and obtained salivary cortisol (SC) samples before and after the last training session of the week. The authors measured capillary blood lactate (La) 2, 4, and 8 min af

Heart rate asymmetry (HRA) is an index that accounts for an uneven contribution of decelerations and accelerations to the heart rate variability (HRV). Clinical studies indicated that HRA measures have additive clinical value over the more frequently used HRV indexes. Despite the abundance of studies on psychological influences on HRV, little is known whether psychological factors influence HRA. Based on previous research regarding HRA and stress, we expected that negative emotions compared to positive emotions would decrease the contribution of decelerations to HRV. Thirty female participants

Resuscitation algorithms and guidelines highlight the importance of heart rate (HR) in determining interventions and assessing their effect. However, the actual HR values used are historical based upon normal physiology, and HR at birth may be affected by mode of delivery and timing of cord clamping as well as respiratory status and condition at delivery. Furthermore, the most accurate and effective ways to assess and monitor HR in the newborn infant are only now becoming established. This article examines the importance of HR values and the most widely used methods of estimation as well as so

BACKGROUND: Heart rate fluctuates beat-by-beat asymmetrically which is known as heart rate asymmetry (HRA). It is challenging to assess HRA robustly based on short-term heartbeat interval series.
METHOD: An area index (AI) was developed that combines the distance and phase angle information of points in the Poincaré plot. To test its performance, the AI was used to classify subjects with: (i) arrhythmia, and (ii) congestive heart failure, from the corresponding healthy controls. For comparison, the existing Porta's index (PI), Guzik's index (GI), and slope index (SI) were calculated. To test

AMPK is a conserved serine/threonine kinase whose activity maintains cellular energy homeostasis. Eukaryotic AMPK exists as αβγ complexes, whose regulatory γ subunit confers energy sensor function by binding adenine nucleotides. Humans bearing activating mutations in the γ2 subunit exhibit a phenotype including unexplained slowing of heart rate (bradycardia). Here, we show that γ2 AMPK activation downregulates fundamental sinoatrial cell pacemaker mechanisms to lower heart rate, including sarcolemmal hyperpolarization-activated current (I f) and ryanodine receptor-derived diastolic local subsa

Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) quantifies large artery stiffness, it is used in hemodynamic research and is considered a useful cardiovascular clinical marker. cfPWV is blood pressure (BP) dependent. Intrinsic heart rate (HR) dependency of cfPWV is unknown because increasing HR is commonly accompanied by increasing BP. This study aims to quantify cfPWV dependency on acute, sympathovagal-independent changes in HR, independent of BP. Individuals (n=52, age 40-93 years, 11 female) with in situ cardiac pacemakers or cardioverter defibrillators were paced at 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 bpm

The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between rest heart rate (HR) and the components of the auditory evoked-related potentials (ERPs) at rest in women. We investigated 21 healthy female university students between 18 and 24 years old. We performed complete audiological evaluation and measurement of heart rate for 10 minutes at rest (heart rate monitor Polar RS800CX) and performed ERPs analysis (discrepancy in frequency and duration). There was a moderate negative correlation of the N1 and P3a with rest HR and a strong positive correlation of the P2 and N2 components with

Heart rate is an easily accessible clinical variable with wide-ranging prognostic impact. Elevated resting heart rate predicts an elevated cardiovascular risk. Epidemiological studies demonstrate a relevant association between heart rate and survival in individuals without diagnosed cardiovascular disease and with cardiovascular disease like hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD) and heart failure. Whereas a goal directed pharmacological heart rate reduction is not supported by clinical evidence for primary prevention it plays a prognostic role for patients with CAD and chronic heart fai

Periodic limb movements (PLM) during sleep are believed to be under the control of the sympathetic nervous system and may cause interrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness. The present case highlights the close relationship between PLM and significant heart rate changes independent of the presence of arousals. Thus, in addition to the already known deleterious effect on sleep continuity, moderate-severe PLM may also affect cardiovascular health.
