Heavy-ion radiation-induced colitis and colorectal carcinogenesis in Il10-/- mice display co-activation of β-catenin and NF-κB signaling.

Space radiation-induced gastrointestinal (GI) cancer risk models for future interplanetary astronauts are being developed that primarily rely on quantitative animal model studies to assess radiation-quality effects of heavy-ion space radiation exposure in relation to γ-rays. While current GI-cancer risk estimation efforts are focused on sporadic GI-cancer mouse models, emerging in-vivo data on heavy-ion radiation-induced long-term GI-inflammation are indicative of a higher but undetermined risk of GI-inflammation associated cancers, such as colitis-associated cancer (CAC). Therefore, we aimed

Using single-sample networks and genetic algorithms to identify radiation-responsive genes in rice affected by heavy ions of the galactic cosmic radiation with different LET values.

INTRODUCTION: Heavy ions of the galactic cosmic radiation dominate the radiation risks and biological effects for plants under spaceflight conditions. However, the biological effects and sensitive genes caused by heavy ions with different linear energy transfer (LET) values have not been thoroughly studied. METHODS: To comprehensively analyze the biological effects of heavy ions with different LET values on rice under spaceflight conditions, we utilized the Shijian-10 recoverable satellite (SJ-10) to transport the dehydrated rice seeds on a 12.5-day mission in a 252 km low Earth orbit (LEO),

Anthraquinone Rhein Mitigates Heavy Ion Radiation-Induced Lung Injury by Maintaining Thioredoxin Reductase/Thioredoxin (TrxR/Trx) Redox Homeostasis.

While heavy ion radiation, particularly carbon-ion therapy exploits high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation for precise tumor targeting through DNA/oxidative damage, its concomitant toxicity to adjacent normal tissues remains a critical limitation. Here, we investigated the radioprotective potential of Rhein, a natural anthraquinone derivative, in ionizing radiation-irradiated lung cells and murine models. In vitro, Rhein pretreatment enhanced cell viability and clonogenic survival, mitigated DNA damage (evidenced by reduced γ-H2AX foci and micronucleus formation), attenuated reactive oxyg

Benzo[a]pyrene and heavy metal ion adsorption on nanoplastics regulated by humic acid: Cooperation/competition mechanisms revealed by molecular dynamics simulations.

Nanoplastics adsorb pollutants and organic matter to aggravate or alleviate impact to the eco-environment and human health. However, the interaction mechanisms remain unclear and difficult to study using current experimental techniques. By means of molecular dynamics simulation, here we investigate adsorption of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and heavy metal ions (Cu2+) on nanoplastics of different materials and surface charges regulated by humic acid (HA). Among considered materials, polystyrene shows the highest capacity of adsorbing BaPs via forming sandwiched π-stacking structures with benzene rings

Toxic heavy metal ions activate the heme-regulated eukaryotic initiation factor-2 alpha kinase by inhibiting the capacity of hemin-supplemented reticulocyte lysates to reduce disulfide bonds.

Addition of toxic heavy metal ions (Cd2+, Hg2+, and Pb2+) to hemin-supplemented rabbit reticulocyte lysate brings about the activation of the heme-regulated eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha kinase (HRI) and the inhibition of protein chain initiation. In this report we examined the effects of monothiol and dithiol compounds, metal ion-chelating agents, and metallothioneins (MT) on metal ion-induced inhibition of protein synthesis. The dithiol compounds dithiothreitol and 2,3-dimercaptopropane sulfonic acid prevented and relieved the inhibition of protein synthesis caused by Cd2+ and Hg2+ in

Heavy ion radiation-induced DNA damage mediates apoptosis via the Rpl27a-Rpl5-MDM2-p53/E2F1 signaling pathway in mouse spermatogonia.

The risk of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) environments has increased with the development of nuclear technology. IR exposure induces excessive apoptosis of the spermatogonia, which leads to male infertility. Spermatogonia apoptosis may be involved in ribosomal stress triggered by DNA damage following exposure to IR because ribosomal proteins (RPs) directly interact with mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2) to induce apoptosis. This study aimed to use comparative proteomics and transcriptomics approach to screen the differential RPs and ribosomal mRNAs in mouse testes following high linea

Multilevel Mechanisms by Which Membrane Transport Proteins Regulate Plant Responses to Heavy Metal Stress: From Ion Perception and Uptake Control to Systemic Signaling and Translational Perspectives.

Soil heavy metal contamination-including cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn) excess, and copper (Cu) excess-poses a critical threat to sustainable agriculture and food safety. Membrane transport proteins serve as primary interfaces governing ion entry, subcellular compartmentalization, and long-distance redistribution. This review integrates recent advances across multiple scales to construct a unified regulatory framework: (i) at the cell periphery, plasma membrane transporters of the NRAMP, ZIP, and COPT families mediate metal influx, whereas efflux transporters an

Anion effect on the control of morphology for NiC2O4·2H2O nanostructures as precursors for synthesis of Ni(OH)2 and NiO nanostructures and their application for removing heavy metal ions of cadmium(II) and lead(II).

In this work, one-dimensional (1-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) nickel oxalate dihydrate nanostructures have been selectively prepared by a one-step and surfactant-free solvothermal approach. This preparation procedure can control the product morphology by varying the reaction temperature and anions such as nitrates, acetates, chlorides and sulfates. The morphology of nickel oxalate dihydrate changed from non-uniform sheets and ribbons to nanorods with higher temperatures while changing the initial anion converted nanorods to dandelion-like nanostructures. Genomic and transcriptomic characterization of gamma ray- and heavy-ion-induced precursor B-cell lymphomas in B6C3F1 mice: radiation-type-dependent interstitial chromosomal deletions at tumor-suppressor gene loci.

Epidemiological studies have revealed that ionizing radiation is a risk factor for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Humans can be exposed to radiation via clinical radiotherapies or spaceflight, yet our knowledge of the potential carcinogenic effects of various types of radiation remains incomplete. To address this shortcoming, we analyzed the development of precursor B-cell lymphoma (pBL) in B6C3F1 mice after irradiation with gamma rays or heavy ions (carbon, silicon, argon, or iron ions) followed by array comparative genomic hybridization, whole-exome sequencing, and RNA-sequencing analyses. The stability of the compounds formed in the process of removal Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) by steelmaking slag in an acidic aqueous solution.

The potential feasibility of steel slag as a low cost removal agent for heavy metal ions Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in acidic conditions was investigated in this study. The initial pH effect on heavy metal ion removal efficiency, the compounds formed after heavy metal ion removal, and the binding force of metals with the compounds were determined. The results showed that the efficiency of removing heavy metal ions by steel slag was low at low initial pH levels, yet it sharply increased and then became stable as the initial pH increased. The pseudo-second order model provided the best descriptio

Amyloid-carbon hybrid membranes for universal water purification.

Industrial development, energy production and mining have led to dramatically increased levels of environmental pollutants such as heavy metal ions, metal cyanides and nuclear waste. Current technologies for purifying contaminated waters are typically expensive and ion specific, and there is therefore a significant need for new approaches. Here, we report inexpensive hybrid membranes made from protein amyloid fibrils and activated porous carbon that can be used to remove heavy metal ions and radioactive waste from water. During filtration, the concentration of heavy metal ions drops by three t
