There is no established hemostasis method or protocol for the transdistal radial approach. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether "the PreludeSYNC DISTAL" radial compression device (PSD; Merit Medical Systems, Inc., South Jordan, UT) can effectively prevent distal radial artery (dRA) occlusion following catheterization procedures. This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent hemostasis using the PSD from January 1, 2019, to March 31, 2019. The primary endpoint was occlusion or excessive stenosis of the radial artery (RA) 1 month after catheterization. Pulsatile blood flow

Intraoperative hemostasis and dural closure are critical components of neurosurgical procedures, directly affecting operative time, blood loss, neurological outcomes, and the risk of cerebrospinal fluid leak, infection, and reoperation. Over the past 2 decades, there has been rapid expansion in the availability of hemostatic adjuncts, dural substitutes, and liquid sealants. Despite widespread adoption, product selection is frequently guided by surgeon preference and institutional practice rather than a detailed understanding of material composition, mechanism of action, and product-specific li

Advances in hemophilia care have markedly improved bleeding control and extended life expectancy, bringing age-related comorbidities to the forefront. Ischemic heart disease (IHD) and other thrombotic events are no longer rare in real-world practice. While observational studies from Europe and North America report that 5% to 8% of patients experience IHD-related events, earlier Japanese retrospective data suggested a much lower burden. In the nationwide prospective ADVANCE Japan cohort of adults with hemophilia aged ≥40 years, IHD-related events have been observed during follow-up, highlightin

Stress, encompassing both psychological and physical dimensions, profoundly affects the hemostatic system, which is responsible for maintaining the delicate balance between blood fluidity and clot formation. The interplay between stress and hemostasis involves intricate mechanisms where stress hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline interact with coagulation factors and platelets, promoting a hypercoagulable state. This review delves into the various pathways through which stress influences hemostasis, highlighting the critical roles of the sympathetic nervous system, the hypotha

During arterial puncture or cannulation in mice, permanent ligation of the artery is often required due to difficulty achieving hemostasis after needle withdrawal. This leads to permanent ischemic injury in the supplied tissue region. Such localized ischemia frequently induces secondary complications, compromising experimental outcomes in animal models. The present method aims to seal the puncture site post-procedure while maintaining normal blood flow, thereby preventing postoperative ischemia. This method involves harvesting an adipose tissue fragment from the experimental animal itself, per

The role of the hematologist in the management of vascular anomalies is evolving. Several vascular tumors and malformations are associated with complex coagulation derangements. Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma or tufted angiomas may present with a consumptive coagulopathy known as the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon (KMP). The management of KMP is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality from this condition. Slow-flow vascular malformations (SFVM) are also frequently complicated by a coagulopathy requiring anticoagulation, especially during and after surgical procedures, and some of these condi

Coagulation is a crucial biological mechanism in human bodies to prevent blood loss. Abnormal coagulation can cause bleeding diathesis or thrombosis, common pathologic conditions in our clinical practice. Many individuals and organizations have dedicated their efforts in the past decades to understanding the biological and pathological mechanisms of coagulation and developing laboratory testing tools and treatment options to help patients with bleeding or thrombotic conditions. Since 1926, the Mayo Clinic coagulation group has made significant contributions to the clinical and laboratory pract

Cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) is a neurovascular disease that affects 0.5% of the general population. For a long time, CCM research focused on genetic mutations, endothelial junctions and proliferation, but recently, transcriptome and proteome studies have revealed that the hemostatic system and neuroinflammation play a crucial role in the development and severity of cavernomas, with some of these publications coming from our group. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the latest molecular insights into the interaction between CCM-deficient endothelial cells with blood comp

Platelets are anucleate cell-fragments derived predominantly from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow and released in the blood circulation, with a normal count of 150 000-40 000 per μl and a lifespan of approximately 10 days in humans. A primary role of platelets is to aid in vascular injury site-specific clot formation to stanch bleeding, termed hemostasis. Platelets render hemostasis by a complex concert of mechanisms involving platelet adhesion, activation and aggregation, coagulation amplification, and clot retraction. Additionally, platelet secretome can influence coagulation kinetics and

BACKGROUND: Our recent studies suggest that sphingomyelin levels in the plasma membrane influence TF (tissue factor) procoagulant activity. The current study was performed to investigate how alterations to sphingomyelin metabolic pathway would affect TF procoagulant activity and thereby affect hemostatic and thrombotic processes.
METHODS: Macrophages and endothelial cells were transfected with specific siRNAs or infected with adenoviral vectors to alter sphingomyelin levels in the membrane. TF activity was measured in factor X activation assay. Saphenous vein incision-induced bleeding and the

The combination of frequently abnormal hemostatic markers and catastrophic bleeding as seen with variceal hemorrhage has contributed to the longstanding misperception that chronic liver disease (CLD) constitutes a bleeding diathesis. Laboratory studies of hemostasis in liver disease consistently challenge this with global coagulation assays incorporating activation of the protein C pathway demonstrating rebalanced hemostasis. It is now recognized that bleeding in CLD is predominantly secondary to portal hypertension (rather than a coagulopathy) and additionally that these patients are at incre

"The frequent concurrence of phlegmasia alba dolens with an appreciable cancerous tumor, led me to the inquiry whether a relationship of cause and effect did not exist between the two, and whether the phlegmasia was not the consequence of the cancerous cachexia." (translated from the original French). This famous quote, delivered in a lecture by Armand Trousseau in 1865, is widely recognized as the initial and insightful understanding of the relationship of thrombosis and cancer.Although the association of thrombosis with cancer has been recognized for over 150 years, only recently has there b

Achieving hemostasis, preventing and treating thrombosis, and laboratory measurement of the hemostatic pathways constitute the core elements of managing the critically ill patient with liver failure. Uncontrolled bleeding in acutely decompensated cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure is probably the most familiar clinical challenge to intensivists. Bleeding in these patients can be broadly divided into pressure-driven (portal hypertension-related) bleeding with only limited dependence on hemostatic pathways and intractable mucosal/wound bleeding, which is much more directly related to a

Preclinical Research Hemostasis is the complex physiological process that stems bleeding at an injury site while simultaneously maintaining unobstructed circulation in other areas of the body. This system is kept in balance with finely tuned regulation by pro- and antithrombotic agents. When this balance is thrown out of equilibrium, uncontrolled bleeding, or thrombotic complications can occur. Because of the high number of hemostatic disorders, researchers are continually searching for improved technologies for controlling coagulation. Recently, peptide mimetic strategies have been employed t

Excessive hemorrhage through any reasons is a life threatening process. Artemisia scoparia of family Asteraceae has been used in local system of medicine to stop bleeding from wounds and in injuries, antiseptic, in healing urticarial and for removal of worms from the body. Aerial parts of A. scoparia was extracted with 95% methanol (ASM) and fractionated through liquid-liquid partition in ascending order of n-hexane (ASH), chloroform (ASC), ethyl acetate (ASE), and the remaining as the aqueous fraction (ASA). Phytochemical classes of the extract/fractions were determined by qualitative assays.

Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for acute coronary thrombosis. In fact, both active/first-hand smoke and passive/second-hand smoke exposure are known to increase the risk of coronary thrombosis. Although recently a new risk has been identified and termed third-hand smoke (THS), which is the residual tobacco smoke contaminant that remains after a cigarette is extinguished, it remains to be determined whether it can also enhance the risk of thrombogenesis, much like first-hand smoke and second-hand smoke. Therefore, the present studies investigated the impact of THS exposure in the cont
