Body weight and dysautonomia in early Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) begin to lose weight several years before diagnosis, which suggests weight variation is associated with some factor(s) that precede the onset of motor symptoms. This study aimed to investigate the association of autonomic nervous system with body weight in patients with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 90 patients with early de novo PD. We examined the associations of body mass index (BMI) with sympathetic nervous activity reflected in orthostatic intolerance or cardiac uptake of 123 I-metaiodobenzylguanidine and parasympathetic n

Heart Rate Variability's Association with Positive and Negative Affect in Daily Life: An Experience Sampling Study with Continuous Daytime Electrocardiography over Seven Days.

Heart rate variability has been found to be related to emotional processing and emotional responses. Studies that investigated these relationships were mostly lab-based or cross-sectional. Only limited research used intensive longitudinal data, in particular investigating within-individual processes in real-life settings. This study addresses the applicability of ambulatory-assessed electrocardiograms in combination with the experience sampling methodology by investigating the associations of various HRV measures with affective states on within- and between-individual levels. A total of 26 par

Serum selenium concentration, glutathione peroxidase activity and lipid peroxides in a co-twin control study on multiple sclerosis.

Serum selenium concentration, glutathione peroxidase activity and lipid peroxides were determined in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The series consisted of 13 same-sexed twin pairs derived from the Finnish Twin Cohort of 15,815 pairs. Fourteen subjects had a definite and 1 a probable MS, and their 11 co-twins showed no evidence of central nervous system disease. No statistical differences were observed, but the 3 patients with active progressive MS had a higher mean level of lipid peroxides than the rest of the patients. We suggest that serum lipid peroxidation may be involved in the a

[Pharmacological correction of experimental alcoholic embryopathy].

In the experiments on the progeny of ethanol-exposed rats it was shown that consumption of 15% alcohol instead of water during pregnancy resulted in the worsening of shuttlebox avoidance learning and decrease in succinate dehydrogenase activity in the visual and sensorimotor cortex. These data are indicative of cerebral hypoxia during embryogenesis. The injection of synthetic opioid peptide dalargin during critical periods of development (at the end of embryogenesis and early ontogeny) prevented partially the disturbances of higher nervous activity and tissue breathing which were induced by al

Temozolomide as a Single Agent Maintenance Therapy in Elderly Patients With Primary CNS Lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal management of elderly patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) after induction therapy is unclear. Whole-brain radiotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation carry increased toxicity in patients older than 60 years of age, which might outweigh the benefits in this group. Temozolomide (TMZ) has established antineoplastic activity in the central nervous system in other disease states, with a favorable toxicity profile. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report efficacy and tolerability in a series of 10 patients treated off-label with TMZ maintenance afte

Neurotoxic effects of the combined exposure to carbon disulphide and ethanol in rats.

Neurotoxic effects of the combined exposure of rats to carbon disulphide (CS2) and ethanol (EtOH) were studied. Biochemical and ultrastructural evaluation of the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) was performed. Male Wistar rats were exposed to CS2 vapour (0.8 mg/l air) and to 10% alcohol in the drinking water for 8 months. EtOH elevated the increase in beta-glucuronidase activity caused by CS2 in the hippocampus and in the cerebral cortex. No effect on the high-affinity synaptosomal uptake of L-glutamate and GABA was observed and no marked ultrastructural changes

Physiologic regulation of heart rate and blood pressure involves connexin 36-containing gap junctions.

Chronically elevated sympathetic nervous activity underlies many cardiovascular diseases. Elucidating the mechanisms contributing to sympathetic nervous system output may reveal new avenues of treatment. The contribution of the gap junctional protein connexin 36 (Cx36) to the regulation of sympathetic activity and thus blood pressure and heart rate was determined using a mouse with specific genetic deletion of Cx36. Ablation of the Cx36 protein was confirmed in sympathetic preganglionic neurons of Cx36-knockout (KO) mice. Telemetric analysis from conscious Cx36 KO mice revealed higher variance

Quantification of autonomic nervous activity by heart rate variability and approximate entropy in high ultrafiltration rate during hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on the imbalance of the autonomic nervous system in ultrafiltration rate (UFR) subjects without blood pressure variation during maintenance hemodialysis (HD), although the role of autonomic nervous system activation during HD has been proposed to be an important factor for the maintenance of blood pressure. METHODS: Variations over time in autonomic nervous activity due to differences in UFR were evaluated by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) and approximate entropy (ApEn) in 35 HD patients without blood pressure variations during HD session. The subj

The Relevance of Heart Rate Variability for Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy.

This review examines what constitutes heart rate variability (HRV), the relationship between HRV and the autonomic nervous system, and the physiology driving HRV. HRV is correlated with vagal nerve activity and parasympathetic nervous activation. Higher HRV is correlated with youth, active lifestyle, adaptive capacity, and good health. Next, the review examines the medical significance of HRV, especially the correlation between lower HRV and the presence of medical and psychological disorders. In general, HRV serves as a biomarker for health and disease, an index of autonomic nervous system dy

School environment associates with lung function and autonomic nervous system activity in children: a cross-sectional study.

Children are in contact with local environments, which may affect respiratory symptoms and allergic sensitization. We aimed to assess the effect of the environment and the walkability surrounding schools on lung function, airway inflammation and autonomic nervous system activity. Data on 701 children from 20 primary schools were analysed. Lung function, airway inflammation and pH from exhaled breath condensate were measured. Pupillometry was performed to evaluate autonomic activity. Land use composition and walkability index were quantified within a 500 m buffer zone around schools. The propor

Autonomic nervous system activity in constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome patients.

BACKGROUND: The main mechanism underlying irritable bowel syndrome is currently believed to be a dysfunction of the brain-gut axis. Autonomic nervous system dysfunction can contribute to development of irritable bowel syndrome symptoms by disturbing visceral sensations. MATERIAL/METHODS: Thirty patients with a diagnosis of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome and 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Resting and functional autonomic nervous system tests and percutaneous electrogastrography were performed. Plasma adrenalin, noradrenalin, insulin, ghrelin and cholecysto

Cerebrospinal dehydrogenases in central nervous system infections.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dehydrogenases were studied in 42 controls, 23 children with pyogenic meningitis, 22 with tuberculous meningitis and 19 with encephalitis to assess their usefulness in differentiating between the different central nervous system infections. CSF-LDH and ICD activity was increased in CNS infections (p less than 0.0001), LDH being significantly higher (p less than 0.001) in pyogenic meningitis than in tuberculous meningitis or encephalitis. However, ICD activity was significantly different in each of these conditions (p less than 0.001). The dehydrogenase activity declin

Effects of Walking in a Forest on Young Women.

The effects of forest activities on health promotion have received increasing attention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological and psychological effects of brief walks in forests on young women. The experiments were conducted in 6 forests (test) and 6 city areas (control). Overall, 12 participants in each area (60 participants in total, mean age: 21.0 ± 1.3 years) were instructed to walk in a forest and a city area for approximately 15 min; simultaneously, their heart rate variability, heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse rate were measured to quantify their physiological re

Toxicity during early development of the mouse nervous system of a scorpion neurotoxin active on sodium channels.

The lethal effects of scorpion envenomation is due to neurotoxins active on voltage-sensitive sodium channels. Dysfunctions of the peripheral and central nervous systems with neurological manifestations are commonly observed after scorpion stings, specially in young children. Since the neurotoxicity of venom fraction is greatly higher by intracerebroventricular than by subcutaneous injections, a direct effect of venom on CNS cannot be excluded specially in infants where the blood-brain barrier is not fully functional. We investigated the activity of a neurotoxin from the scorpion Androctonus a

Changes to mitochondrial ultrastructure in optic nerve vulnerable to secondary degeneration in vivo are limited by irradiation at 670 nm.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury to the central nervous system results in damage to tissue beyond the primary injury, termed secondary degeneration. Key events thought to be associated with secondary degeneration involve aspects of mitochondrial function which may be modulated by red/near-infrared irradiation therapy (R/NIR-IT), but precisely how mitochondria are affected in vivo has not been investigated. Secondary degeneration was modelled by transecting the dorsal aspect of the optic nerve in adult rats and mitochondrial ultrastructure in intact ventral optic nerve vulnerable to secondary degen

Regional sympathetic nervous activity and oxygen consumption in obese normotensive human subjects.

BACKGROUND: Disturbed sympathetic nervous function may be of importance in obesity; sympathetic underactivity could contribute to deficient thermogenesis, positive energy balance, and weight gain, while in contrast, sympathetic nervous overactivity would predispose to the development of obesity-related hypertension. Global indices of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function such as plasma or urinary norepinephrine (NE) have been unable to define SNS status in obesity. Since regional SNS activity can be altered in the absence of global changes, we investigated SNS activity in the heart, kidney

Alterations in the accumulation patterns of polyamines in brains of myelin-deficient mice.

Quaking mutants and jimpy mutants of mice have known deficiencies of myelination of the central nervous system, as well as lesser involvement of the peripheral nervous system. Both mutants also have altered polyamine synthesis and accumulation, particularly in the hindbrain and spinal column. The ratio of spermidine/spermine, which generally is higher in tissues with high rates of biosynthetic activity, was significantly lower in the mutants as compared to their normal siblings. In quaking mutants, 5 months of age, the spermidine concentration of hindbrain and spinal column was 60% that of con

[Autonomic nervous function of vertiginous patients--assessment by spectral analysis of heart rate variability].

Autonomic nervous function in 68 vertiginous patients and 33 controls was studied using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. First, a system was developed which computes the power spectral density (PSD) of beat-to-beat heart intervals using a continuous non-invasive finger blood pressure recording obtained with the FINAPRESS device. A fast-Fourier transform algorithm was used to compute the PSD. In frequencies up to 0.5 Hz, the PSD of heart rate variability contains three major components: a low frequency (P1), a middle frequency (P2) and a high frequency (P3). Each component was

Effect of barbituric acid on the high pressure nervous syndrome in the rat.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were compressed in helium-oxygen mixture at a rate of 3 bar/min. Compression ended once the first convulsion was seen. Saline or barbituric acid at 1 or 2% were infused continuously during compression at a rate of 9.49 ml/h (tail vein). With barbituric acid at 1%, coarse tremor and convulsions appeared at higher pressures than in saline controls. No significant change was observed with 2% barbituric acid compared to saline controls. Barbituric acid which is nonanesthetic had some anti-high pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS) activity which is dose dependent. These results
